I have been using my SawStop 36" contractors saw for about four years-its great. I originally wanted the cabinet saw (not too much more money) but, given its weight, could not find a good way to get it down the stairs to my basement shop. In contrast, the contractors saw comes in pieces, which are much easier to handle. Fit and finish is excellent as advertised. Everything is built heavy and well. Alignment was perfect out of the box, and has stayed that way. The 1.75hp motor is completely adequate for almost all tasks. I have triggered the safety mechanism only once, when I allowed a metal tenoning jig to touch the blade at the bottom of a complicated compound-angle cut. It is a shock when it happens {sounds like a shotgun going off}-a real attention getter that makes you really focus on what you are doing going forward. One suggestion: the screw mechanism to raise and lower the blade is located directly behind and to the left of the blade where it collects caked-on saw dust, even with good dust collection. It requires frequent maintenance {vacuum, compressed air and then silicon spray}to keep it working smoothly. A simple metal deflector worked into the design would easily reduce or eliminate this problem. But, all in all, an expensive tool that is worth every dollar.

Just received my SawStop 36" contractors saw and I have to say, this is one of the most beautifully built tools I've ever bought. Every piece feels smooth and solid and fits together perfectly. And the packaging and assembly instructions make it simple for anyone to put the saw together. I did it in less than 2 hours.

I have only one criticism: the stamped steel wings that come standard with the saw are completely inadequate. They do not align easily, and even if you get the edges flush with the table saw, they sag. The metal is just not stiff enough to stay flat all the way from table to outer edge.

Luckily, I ordered the cast iron wings. They haven't arrived yet, but when they do, I'll be taking those stamped wings off right away and using them for TV dinner trays. Given the very high quality of SawStop's product, I think they should seriously consider redesigning those wings. A couple of simple support ribs would be enough to stiffen the wings and keep them straight from edge to edge. Otherwise, I can't see anyone getting a straight cut on these things.

I've had this for two years, and it has been nothing short of awesome. Obviously, the biggest feature of any SawStop model is the blade brake technology. But that aside, these saws are best in class in many other features. The "fit and finish" of them is phenomenal. Everything assembles easily, all the moving parts work smoothly and everything looks and feels solid.

I'd highly recommend upgrading to the solid cast iron wings. The stamped steel wings that come with the contractor saw are decent, but the cast iron makes the thing like a tank. The extra weight adds heft to the saw, thus reducing vibration. And the extension wings are machined so well that when they are properly attached, it is like the saw has one solid continuous cast iron top, just like the cabinet saw models.

I also recommend upgrading to one of the larger rip capacities this particular model I'm reviewing already comes with the 36" rip capacity. The base model fence system allows a 30" rip. That fence appears to to be well made, but I never actually saw it in person. The 36" or larger capacity fences come with a Biesemeyer style fence that is built extremely well, glides effortlessly and locks in position very sturdily. It is also very easy to precisely adjust plum and parallel.

As for the power of the 1.75 HP motor, I've never had any problems with it bogging down or feeling like it otherwise wasn't strong enough. I'd obviously like a larger motor such as in the cabinet saws because I'm personally programed to always want the most power available in everything. But practically speaking, the 1.75 HP is plenty strong.

I also have the mobile base, which is similar built top notch. It actually integrates into the legs of the saw, instead of just having the saw sit on the base. The mobile base operates smoothly and easily.

So overall, I'd highly recommend this saw for any serious woodworker. For production shops, it would be better to upgrade to a cabinet saw because it will presumably last longer and take more of a beating. But the contractor saw is a very impressive and serious tool and should suffice for most people.
