One Storage Case

After several years of use on the old Rockler 12" square, which they no longer sell it suddenly went nearly 1/16th out of square. I took it back to the store and they replaced it with one of these. It appears to be of very good quality. Their customer service is first rate.

I received the iGaging 12" Combination Square today. Upon opening the box one of the plastic tabs that keeps the plastic case for the square closed fell out onto the table. Next, when attempting to slide the measuring blade into the head I found the channel on the head filled with oily machining grit that is most likely from when the faces of the head square were being ground. Once I cleaned the grit from the head I insterted the measuring blade into the head but is only slide about a third of the way down the blade before it stopped. Sliding the blade back out the opposite direction I could see that there was a chipped metal burr about a third of the way down the channel. I was able to file that down with a micro file and then slide the blade back into head where it then moved smoothly. Finally, I noticed the bubble level was covered with a smeared adhesive that made the bubble difficult to see. I was able to clean most of that off using some mineral spirits and an xacto knife. While I didn't expect to receive a "Starrett quality" combination square, I likewise did not expect to recieve one  that is subpar for the price.

I found the ruler would jam when trying to slide it in the head piece, particularly at one end. The problem seemed to be that the slot in the ruler was not well machined. The plastic case is difficult to open, and requires that you separate the ruler from the head to use it for storage. I decided to return the unit and save up for a Starrett.
