Deulen Sharpening Jigs eliminate the cost and down-time of sending your jointer and planer knives away for sharpening, AND they bring the ''scary sharp'' sandpaper sharpening method to power tools. The process couldn't get any simpler. Just pop your planer or jointer knives into the two brass slots, cinch down the lock nuts, and with a few strokes on progressively finer sheets of sandpaper, you'll have an edge that rivals that of the finest handplanes. The jigs are available in 6'' and 12'' lengths for knives up to 16'' in length, and the jigs can also be doubled up for longer knives. 18'' long strips of PSA sandpaper are available below to be adhered to your own piece of plate glass, granite, or other flat sharpening surface.

Technical Details:
  • 6'' Deulen Sharpening Jig handles knives up to 8'' in length.
  • 12'' Deulen Sharpening Jig handles knives up to 16'' in length.
  • For longer knives, the sharpening jigs can be piggy-backed.
  • A progression of grits from 120 to 400 grit sandpaper is recommended for optimum sharpness.
  • 3-blade jointer knives can also be sharpened. If the knife is 8'' or less, the 12'' Deulen Sharpening Jig can handle three blades at once.
  • For larger planer knives with three blades, a how-to video is included with a simple rotation system to ensure the knives are all sharpened equally.

The holding fixture worked well and I was able to produce sharp and straight planer knives. The problem is that the sandpaper wore out sharpening only one 6" set. For replacement paper, that is a very expensive if you have much sharpening to do.

After sharpening 2 sets of Delta 12 1/2 blades found as much as .007 difference from end too end, use 3/8" plate glass for the sand paper. Double checked everything such as sure planer blade was bottomed out in slot. Good idea but needs perfecting.

Used the 12" Deulen jig and sandpaper strips to sharpen both my jointer and planer knives. Both blade sets had small knicks, but starting with the course paper and working to the finest the process really worked well. Was able to smooth out the cutting edges complete with a razor sharp hone in no time. The finish results from both machines are better than when new. Save money and time by sharpening the knives yourself.

What a simple yet elegant product. At first blush it seems like a lot of money for a stick of wood and brass but you get your money's worth. The materials are first rate, the machining is accurate, and I see no reason that it will not be passed down through generations. Reclaiming a few sets of those "disposable" planer knives will easily pay for the jig.

There really is noting like razor sharp tools. Over the years I have sharpened many tools and knives using traditional and modern methods. I own a Tormek sharpener and I love it. Still, I have found nothing easier or more accurate than this little jig. Follow the instructions and you wind up with sharp, straight, matched knives in no time.

I would recommend the Deulen sharpener to any woodworker.
