Black Palm by the Piece

• Native to: Prevalent in North Queensland, Australia. Native to rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia.
• Tree: A tall, attractive palm, growing up to about 60' tall, with a 12' canopy. Trunk is smooth and closely ringed, and becomes nearly black as the palm ages.
• Color: Dark wood, streaked with blacks and browns. Sometimes the flecks are closely-spaced resulting in an almost black appearance. End grain is speckled and resembles lizard skin or hammered leather. End grain has a dramatic look when used as inlay.
• Working Characteristics: Turns very well.
• Scientific name: Borassus flabellife

I purchased 1/8 x 3 x 24 Black Palm for a table top inlay project. I have never seem this wood before let alone used it. This stuff is absolutely gorgeous and quality of the wood is excellent. Don't know how it works yet as won't be starting that project for a week or so but think the customer will love it.

Update after using this wood:

Used this wood for an inlay project were I was cutting it on a scroll saw into small pieces. I found that the only blade I could use successfully was a spiral blade with 48 TPI otherwise the wood would split on grain lines. I also found that it is a good idea to reinforce it periodically while working with it by using thin CA or super glue. The end grain of the wood is also interesting and looks like hammered leather when used as an inlay.
