I was just getting ready to jump online to order a 12"x12" piece of acrylic to make my own jig to use with my Straight Edge System when up popped Rockler's daily email in my box. It featured this dado jig and I thought what a coincidence. Well, it just arrived today and I tried it out right away. The plastic it's made from is pretty thick, stiff, and heavy. I was surprised at it's weight when I first picked up the box. The included screws for mounting your base to the plate are junk. They're barely enough threads protruding to safely mount your router base. I know, I know... that's nitpicking. But I feel if you're going to include parts with an item you're selling, why make them junk. The groove where it fits in to the Straight Edge has a bit too much clearance. So when cutting you have to make sure you're forcing the jig up against the Straight Edge. And now, the biggest problem. Trying to set the jig to the desired width on the scale is a pain. I don't mean physically, I mean trying to eyeball it. The opening where the scale sits has too much of a gap and there's just too much black. I've included a picture trying to show it. The flash from my camera makes it seem like it wouldn't be bad, but with just my normal shop lights trying to set the black scale marks against the black side was hard. Also, the scale on the jig I received is off by a heavy 1/64th. It made the 23/32 dado in my test piece oversized enough to be quite noticeable. I may sound a bit harsh, but I'm just trying to be as descriptive as possible. Really this jig is good. You just have to be careful. I'd give it a SOLID 3.5 if I could. Rating it, it's right there between Good and Very Good.
