With this Click-N-Carve I was able to take a photo of my granddaughter and create this night light. I can hardly wait to give it to her for her birthday. When the light is on it has all the detail of the photograph. It is so amazing and cute. I want to make more! I am thinking of making a lamp shade or setting one in front of a window or... I used the acrylic sample that came with the machine to create this lithophane.

With the understanding there are some limitations, this is a neat little machine. It has a very small work area and the technology isn't capable of vector-path engraving, but is about as simple to operate as a laser printer. First, it arrived in the absolute best packaging I've ever seen. There simply was no way that anything short of an explosion could have damaged it in transit. Setup was pretty much plugging it in. Software easily installed, but is somewhat cartoon like. Like most CNC, there are two separate programs! an editor to create the G-code and another to actually send the code to the machine. Both are somewhat "cartoon-ish" and don't follow "standard" windows conventions, but they are understandable. Should note that a printed instruction manual is included. Rare these days. The English is a little stilted in places, but thorough and understandable. The great thing about the machine is how small and quiet it is. Fully enclosed, I have mine sitting on a folding TV-tray. Footprint about the size of my little Brother printer, but taller. The best feature? This thing is QUIET! I can run a job and watch TV or talk on the phone while sitting right next to it. I had always understood CNC to be French for extremely loud. It's also clean. The plastic hood not only keeps the noise down, but contains any scarf. It isn't fast. Expect several hours for a job. The engraving bits are also expensive, but I've gone to some of the Chinese sources {Alibaba} and obtained 4mm router bits that seem to work pretty well. If you're a serious wood worker, this probably isn't a tool you'll need or respect, but if you are a computer person who wants to experiment with CNC and produce "real" things, this is a reasonable way to get started. Probably not a great deal at full price, Rockler seems to have sales that make it more of a fun toy rather than a major purchase.

I was a little skeptical at first, but I have heard so many stories about using a CNC router, but they are just so expensive. Well, here comes a much more affordable CNC unit! Wow...! It comes with the software, the bits, the router motor! just about everything needed but a computer wrapped up in one nicely packaged box! The software is very simple to understand and can get you carving in a couple hours! I started out working on a small piece just to get my feet wet, a simple sign with some letters heck, I was able to do it in my office it was so quiet, then I did some lithophanes, which are by far the coolest thing I have ever made - then I decided to tackle a more complex carving out of wood. I went online and found the most complex image I could think of - the Presidential Seal. I have included the image that I used as well as the finished carving… I have to say, I am impressed with this little machine – Thanks Rockler!
