I recently came across a book for which I had been looking for about fifteen years. I didn't know what the name of the book was, or who had written it! all I knew was that there just had to be a book out there that was organized as a design handbook for those who basically know how to work wood, but want to build their own custom furniture from their own plans. It would have solutions to problems such as different ways to fit drawers into a case, and different ways to construct any style of case or cabinet, from traditional to contemporary methods. Over the last fifteen years, every “furniture design” book I’ve seen covers a few esoteric concepts such as the golden rectangle and then degenerates into a few fragmented studies of how to make particular furniture components, completely missing important details like how a tall chest is constructed, for example. At long last, from the author of Woodworking With The Router, and Bill Hylton’s Power-Tool Joinery comes the definitive treatment of how to design any kind of casework!

In Illustrated Cabinetmaking, Bill Hylton has compiled a very worthy design notebook, and like the quote from Woodworking Magazine says, “this is the Gray’s Anatomy of woodworking.” The book begins with basic furniture anatomy and a brief summary of traditional furniture styles from medieval times to the early 20th century, with bullet-pointed hallmarks of each style. Then Hylton progresses to construction details and solutions, from basic joinery and how to cope with wood movement, to different alternatives for constructing doors and drawers and incorporating them into cabinetry, to the fundamentals of designing or selecting moldings to be used on upright cabinets, and everything in between. The remaining 242 pages are taken up with type studies of nearly every sort of furniture piece, including all different types of tables, desks, chests, cabinets, and beds. No measured shop drawings here! each type study includes an exploded drawing of a typical example of the type, joinery and construction notes, classic design elements, stylistic variations, and typical dimensions where necessary, all designed to assist in developing your own project plans. Also included with each type study is information on where to obtain published plans of similar projects, for those who do not wish to design their own piece from scratch.

In a nutshell, this book is a must-have for those who have an interest in building furniture, whether from plans made completely from scratch or from published plans {possibly with a few customizations}. The author assumes that the reader already knows the basics of how to work the wood, and focuses on how to design furniture that actually works, looks great and is built to last.
