Classic Chessboard Plan

Build a chessboard so fine, it’s fit for a king or a queen!

The uniquely designed chessboard top works with natural wood movement to keep the top stable. Two built-in drawers are perfect for hiding away your chess pieces. Plan is a reprint from issue 48 of Today’s Woodworker magazine.

Finished size is 17'' x 17'' x 4'' High

2 each #35451 5/8'' Bright Brass Knob
4 each #20719 1/4'' Birch Dowel Rods in 12 Inch Lengths
1 each #22814 Green Felt Sheet 24'' x 12''
1 each #70615 Nylo-tape 1/2'' x 10'

The lumber package includes enough Wenge (dark) and Hard Maple (light) to make all 64 squares on the chess board.

The plans I received are full color and high quality. The detail views and plan drawings are excellent, clear, and easy to understand. Though I used my own chessboard grid idea, the project turned out great.

I built this board from the magazine plans in high school shop class. I was glad that I could find the plans as I want to build another one(8 years later). Everybody that sees it loves it! It's fun to build and the drawers for the pieces make it fancy...I made the dark squares out of wenge and the rest of the box out of walnut. You won't be disappointed if you build this!!!

I purchased the chess set plans along with chess men and lumber kit. I thought the chess men were of poor quality and nearly sent them back but decided to keep them. The plans were fairly good in describing how to make the parts.

I ordered the chess board plans and the chessboard lumber kit. This review is for the chessboard lumber kit. I thought the kit would have included all the lumber needed as shown in the plan, however the kit included only boards for the squares of the chess board. I was disappointed to say the least.

I recently carved an intricate chess set and board, but I was intrigued by these plans.
It may take a while, but it looks perfect to go with this carved, not turned, chess set and I am looking forward to completing it.

I purchased this plan ready to build it and when I received the plan was really disapointed, I thought I would receive an original plan with "good pictures" and what I recieved was a bad black and white photocopy that was almost impossible to read and the pictures were impossible to see. So I returned the plan.

I also almost sent this plan back due the details in the plan, but I did build it. I also had to make a few changes when it comes to building the checkerboard. The dowels would not work for me, there's no way to drill and cut each dowel exacly the same at least not with the tools I have, so with some assistance from a more learned worker than me I used a dado on two sides this worked so much better. I did learn alot from this project being my second thing built I think it came out okay.
