I purchased one of these kits about a little over a year ago for my wife for Christmas. Well, I finally got around to putting it together and it looks GREAT! First off, it was very easy to assemble. To begin, I finish sanded all the parts with a Fine sands sponge, mainly just to get the planer marks out of the parts. Then I glued a short side and long side at the mitre, clamped it together with a square, and then let it dry that way you’ll know it is square. Repeat for the other sides. To assemble to two side parts together I just used a rubber band clamp and worked great. To finish the box, I put about 6 coats of Minwax Polyurethane Gloss from the spray cans on it. Inside I bought the sticky back velvet from Rockler and that works AWESOME! Just make sure you measure the pieces correctly. The only constructive criticism I have, is I wish a couple of pilot holes would’ve been drilled on the underside of the top, so you know exactly where to center the top on the box during final assemble. If you think about it the kit is pretty cheap. For about 50 bucks, you get about 15 dollars in materials, but way more than 35 dollars in labor to plane, cut, and route the box pieces. I think I’m going to buy a couple more kits so I can make and give my daughters each one when they get a little older. Thanks Rockler!

My granddaughter 8 years old and I built this kit last week. We started on Sunday and finished on Thursday. The finish was 3 coats of Minwax Wipe-On Poly. The kit went together well, and all the parts were fairly smooth when received. We ran into a few minor problems: 1 some tearout on the bottom profile! 2 we drilled through the top when installing the hinges! 3 minor misalignment of the hinges kept the top from closing fully. We worked through each of the problems, and Claire is very happy with her jewelry box, which she has already filled with costume jewelry from Grandma.

Kit went together beautifully. The glass fit so that the actuator rod could pass between the glass and the back of the box. May have to pay a couple more.

Wanted to make a nice Valentine gift for my honey, but didn't have time to get mega involved. Saw this and thought perfect. Ended up using my Grex Pin Nailer to secure glue up as I didn't have a Band Clamp. Good bang for the buck.. And, I'm sure she'll love it!

This product was great! The wood was of good quality and all the pieces fit together perfectly. The instructions say to sand everything but I didn't even need to. The only flaw is that the glass covering the music movement compartment does not have a hole for an actuator rod. What I did to bypass this was buy extra wood and cut it to match the glass piece and then drilled a hole in it. It worked perfect and I think it looks better anyway. All in all, this is a great kit and makes a great gift.

Excellent quality kit with square miters and very easy to assemble. The only problem, a very minor one, was with the glass not allowing the actuator rod to start the musical movement when the lid was lifted. A simple 3/32" hole drilled in the glass, that allows the rod to pass thru it, with a slight reshaping of the rod, fixed that very easily. All in all, this is a great kit for when you need a quick gift and it's so easy to assemble.

Good quality wood. All piece cut square and to the right dimensions. Fit together perfectly.
Great kit for a quick gift to a gf.
I decided to not use the musical movement and built dividers for her jewlery and bought the self adhesive velvet for the sides as well. It looks good, is more practical and doesn't require any playing around with the musical movement.
