Here's something to consider when selecting hinges...
Look at your cabinet design before selecting hinges. On Eurostyle cabinets,
hinges are attached directly to the cabinet side. This gives you the option
of fully overlaying, half overlaying or insetting the door within the opening,
as shown below:
Overlay
Applications
If you decide to use an overlay cabinet design, select full overlay hinges
for the ends and half overlay hinges in the middle of a row of cabinets.
Inset Applications
Inset doors are recessed into the cabinet carcass to create a completely
flush, clean-lined look. |
|
Self-closing hinges are an ideal for cabinets. The built-in spring pulls the door closed and holds it in a closed position, eliminating the need for catches.
Soft-closing hinges have an adjustable action that, when your door is pushed closed, automatically takes over and brings your door to a whisper-soft close.
Free-swing hinges are most often used in furniture applications, rather than cabinet applications. |
|
| Use
the chart to determine how many hinges you'll need for the height and weight
of your door.
A door
that is 43'' high and weighs 14 lbs. requires three hinges. If your door
is only 24'' high but weighs 14 lbs., go with three hinges for maximum
support and stability.
Use
on 5/8'' - 3/4'' doors unless otherwise noted. |

I replaced the existing hinges on a neighbor's TV cabinet. The previous hinges would only open 90 degrees. The original holes worked for the new Blum hinges and the adjustments allowed the inset doors to be perfectly aligned.

I replaced my old kitchen cabinet hinges with the Blum 170 degree clip top hinges. Fortunately the old hinges were also Blums so I did not have to redrill the cups. Unfortunately, the old hinges' mounting screws were larger than the new hinges' screws so I had to drill and fill the old holes with dowels and then drill pilot holes for the new screws.
Because the new hinges instructions were so clear, I had almost no problems accurately locating the new pilot holes. I only positioned one hinge plate slightly incorrectly, but the ability to adjust the hinges up and down quickly solved that problem.
Otherwise the hinges went in quickly and easily (I did ten pairs of hinges in a hour or two) and the alignment adjustments were particularly easy and effective.
And, the hinges themselves are terrific. I love being able to open the doors enough that they don't get in the way.
While trying to decide which hinges to purchase, and later during installation, I sent several questions to the Rockler support team. They were terrific. They quickly provided very helpful advice.
I highly recommend these hinges.

A great hinge but it is on the large side of things. If you need a wide opening hinge, you can always trust Blum to have a superior product. They should last for a lifetime.

Easy to install. Easy to adjust. Works great. They are more bulky than hinges which do not open widely.

For a TV area built into a wall of cabinets w/doors, we replaced the existing Blum hinges on just one set of doors with these that allowed the doors to lay almost flat when opened-and we could not be happier. An easy plug (with a dowel) was sufficient to plug where the former hinges were attached -
The best thing was the advice the Rockler staff gave when I had a hard time choosing the right hinge.

While redoing my son’s room I had to re-build a wall which happened to have our flat-screen TV hanging on the other side. I’ve created a closet to pull all the wires through and to put hide the surge controller. I’ve built a custom in-the-wall shelf unit and used the concealed hinges to provide a zero clearance for the unit.

This is a very nice hinge. It was easy to install but I do not think when they say a half overlay they do not mean 1/2" overlay. I just made that mistake and had a large mess on the last day of smooth going project. This is more like a 5/16" overlay. This makes a big difference if you have drawers above the door to line up to. Of course now I see the illustrations that show one half of a 3/4" board, not 1/2".

I ordered this product to replace butt hinges on an inset cabinet door. The customer no longer wanted to have visible hardware but still wanted the full opening provided by the old hinges. This item proved to be a perfect replacement, was easy to install, well made, and provided an ample amount of adjustment possibilities for the perfect fit.

The product gives the appearance that the inside edge of the door will be clear of the cabinet side, thereby allowing internal drawers or shelves to slide outward. This is not the case with the inset hinge as the door does not clear the interior side of the cabinet. The door may open 170 degrees but it does not clear the opening and is useless in this application.
Editor's note: in an inset door application if one is adding pullouts in a cabinet one will simple need to make them narrower so that they will clear the door when open.

This is an excellent hinge, firm, with adjustments in all three directions and a clip-on feature that works well. I also agree on the hinge taking more space than those that open less. While this is a worthy penalty for those who need the wide opening it is also a reason for not choosing this hinge if a smaller angle is needed.
My only complaint is lack of an instruction sheet. Although I was able to find instructions on the Rockler web site, a drawing with the recommended positions of the cup and screw holes as well as some instructions on adjustments should be included.

I needed a concealed hinge that provided zero clearance for a drawer and this was the obvious choice. The hinge provides approximately a 1/16" clearance (fully opened) allowing the drawer to open. These hinges pair nicely with Blum's standard 120 SC full overlay hinges which I used on the other door to this wine bar. Add the blumotion soft close feature for the finishing touch.
