Used this item for the first time today. Worked very well. I am building a 5-unit bookcase assembly for a home library that will have 25 adjustable shelves. I pushed 500 holes in about 2 1/2 hours. The matching drill bit worked flawlessly. Nice piece of equipment.

I purchased this jig through mail order and received it within 5 days included a weekend. I read the instructions fully and immediately put it to work. I was making 2 walls of book cases in the basement, and it worked great. Previously, I had made my own jig by using pegboard, which worked fine... to an extent. I have had no experience of cracking with my jig even after drilling 600+ holes. The only thing I will do next time, is either purchase a second jig to attach to it so that I can drill more holes before moving the jig, or else decide to drill a series of "sets" of holes along the board, which would require more measuring for begin placement of each set. Overall, this is a very good purchase, as well as the purchase I had made previously of other Rockler Jigs. Keep up the good work and as was stated before: thanks for keeping the price in my budget.

I do quite a bit of cabinetry work and was pleased with the JIG IT template. One thing that I was concerned about was whether to finish first and then drill the shelf support holes or the opposite. I ended up doing the finishing first, concerned about how stain would interact with the holes. My project involved some red oak shelves made of good quality vaneer plywood that were finished with satin polyurethane. Fortunately, I had some scrap pieces of the verticals that I finished expecting that I would need to experiment. At first, I was disappointed with how much splintering occured when I used the bit on the test piece, and of course, if I sanded this, I'd need to do more finishing. A trick I developed was to place a piece of 1/4" plywood under the template and over the finished vertical sections. Drilling through the 1/4" plywood and then into the finished shelf supports totally eliminated the splintering.

Some caution when using pine because it is a soft wood the holes may not keep their shape. Shelf pins can sag if there is too much weight. Regardless, the Jig-It works great and is easy to use!

Product works well, but shipping dept  packed it into a box too small for its' wrapping and broke the jig in a spot that didn't hinder performance, just annoyed me, but I needed it that day, so no chance of returning it for another. Definitely use at higher speeds-much cleaner holes. Bit requires cleaning regularly, but I expected that...this is obviously not a production type jig. Plastic is somewhat thin and brittle as I found out, so store flat and avoid things knocking into it. I've read some reviews with people having spacing issues...I've checked all measurements and mine is spot-on. Using with care should keep it around for a good while.

Editor's note: Our customer service team at 800-376-7856 will still be able to assist with arranging a replacement for the damaged jig for you.

I have used this jig on three bookcases so far, and it works great. In the beginning I had some problems with tear out and slight spliting around the holes when using the jig with fairly soft wood e.g. poplar. It took some experimenting, but I finally realized that the problem was with the cordless drill I was using! i.e. it was not turning or rotating fast enough to do a clean job. I switched to my standard drill that plugs into a wall outlet and discovered that it runs at a higher speed. Drilling the holes at the higher speed resulted in very sharp, clean holes. This jig is a very good value and I highly recommend it.

After some misaligned shelves, I did some checking......measuring from opposite ends of the jig, the holes are NOT spaced evenly...on a four foot run of holes, the top two holes {front and back} are off by more than 1/8 inch. This results from flipping the jig over to do the front and back holes. After questioning  about the misallignment, they said to take the edge guide off and mark one end of the jig as the bottom and always use that edge for the bottom....well if the holes are not aligned in the first place, it's not really a jig, is it? Save your money and make your own jig.

HELPFUL HINTS-> I can usually find a way to mess up anything, no matter how simple. This product works well, as most other reviewers have already commented on. I was drilling holes in two bookcases, so on the 4th side 2nd side of 2nd case I managed to start drilling the holes using the wrong row. I could have either plugged them and re-drilled them, or continue, and have one set of rows closer to the edge. I decided to continue. Next time, however, I will put a strip of masking tape over the unused holes to prevent Murphy's Law from striking again.

This is an excellent product for it's intended purpose. People have suggested many additions and improvements that, while certainly improving it, would also make it more expensive.

There are already quite a few professional level shelf drilling systems available. I can't justify them for my limited use, therefore I am glad they don't improve this system until it's out of my range. It's not uncommon for companies to keep improving and adding to a product until the price and function are beyond the original target audience. Rockler has not done that to my great delight.

This jig works great for a home shop to drill a few hundred shelf pin holes. If I were going to go into production, or drill thousands of holes, I would spend the money for a more robust and more expensive setup.

Thanks Rockler for keeping it simple for the rest of us.

A good product indeed.

The "Jig It" shelving jig was a snap to use and kept my shelving holes on target. Shelves were true and didn't rock. The plunge bit filled up quickly but if I used a high rpm and did a double plunge, it cleared the shavings.

I bought this jig to make adjustable shelves in my closets and pantry. I started drilling the holes for the shelf pins after measuring the distances out on the board. Ended up being off a 1/4" on one run. Thought I had just rushed and mis-measured. Repeated the steps and had the same result. Called Rockler and they gave some recommendations. Always us the same side down, take the handle off and put it on the other side so the same side is down always, and index more. Well I indexed ever time but still 1/4" off. Don't waste your money. Also if your going to put in Grommets and need 9/32" bit, their is no way to index that size hole. So no matter what you do, the holes won't work.

Awesome tool and extremely accurate especially when you have to flip it end for end inside a cabinet. The storage compartments are really handy for storing the allen wrench and bit. I also store a 1/4" shelf pin in the same pocket for continuous drilling. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Money well worth spent!

I just recently purchased this jig after using a homemade jig for several projects. I just got done with completing three book shelves about 7' tall. The jig worked smoothly and made the project go very quickly. I was very pleased with the quality of the jig. It was very easy to index and keep everything in line. I was pleased that this jig came with the drill built unlike the pro model. The only thing that I would suggest is that the kit include an index pin.

This jig works as advertised. I drilled 100 holes in just a few minutes. I did the drilling after applying the finish as someone here suggested. I had no problems with tear out even using my Big Box cheap oak plywood. I found that if I backed the bit out while it was still up to speed it tended to stay clear of chips quite well. I did have to clear the bit a few times but it was not a problem. My homemade shelf jig is history.

I've used this jig for about five years and have been having trouble with inserting shelf pins. A few measurements shows that my drill bit is slightly under 0.25" and the pins are slightly over. What should be a great jig is marginally useful.

I purchased this on sale but it would have easily been worth paying full price. Works great as is but I would recommend securing it to your workpiece with a piece of masking or painters tape.
I made a bookcase for my Grandson using the shelf pins with sleeves. He commented to me that the holes were so precise that they looked machine made.

I purchased this jig for a new tv stand I was building for holes to hold pins for shelves. As the project was still on the bench, went to use jig...because of the door handles I cannot use this on 3/4" stock. The handles are in the way and make the jig rise above and not stay on your work, also, there is no stop on the drill bit to set depth of drill...would not recommend buying one.

This is a great jig and works well. While not impacting the function yet, it is showing some wear after just a few projects. I would like to see this product made with some metal sleeves or grommets in the holes so the bit guide wouldn't eat away at the plastic.

For those having difficulty with keeping the jig aligned or keeping it from slipping...Place a shelf pin in the bottom/top hole after drilling the first hole. This will lock the jig in place so that spacing will be consistent.

Bought this jig some time ago anticipating a future project...and the project arose: an entertainment center for my daughter. Just loved this jig. Where I had previously used inset brackets for shelving heretofore for fear of mis-aligning pin holes, the shelving jig made the alignment of correctly-spaced pin holes a breeze. Moreover, the self-centering bit is just a joy to use. I made provision for four shelves in minutes and with less hassle than any previous process. In short, I heartily recommend this jig...and centering bits... for any furniture builder.

The shelving jig from Rockler is excellent! Simple directions. Just had to screw on the butting edge for the application needed. It allows for faced or un-faced cabinet installs. I would suggest clamping the jig in place; I noticed the bit grabs the wood and tends to move the jig down the work piece. Great product. I will be using it a lot.

Excellent product. I read most all the reviews before purchasing and have to disagree with several. Regarding the bit fitting into the compartment on the handle, it does fit just fine with no binding but it has to go in only one way. No problem. The bit clogs if you try to go fast. No big deal, as with any other woodworking project, patience makes anything look better. The jig has mounting screws that stick out away from the bottom of the plexiglass, This is not a huge issue as stated. excellent product. No regrets.

I like the jig a lot, but I find the bit to be slow to boor into the piece. I used it last night on some painted MDF and I was surprised how long it took to get the whole created. Know I was using my Dewalt 14.4v drill, maybe you need more power, but if you do that is a shame, 14.4v should be enough.

This product works well for one-at-a-time projects, although it isn't perfect. I do get consistently excellent results using it.
If the plexiglass on your tool starts to crack, let thin cyanoacrylate glue wick into the crack and let the glue set up overnight. The fix isn't pretty, but it is permanent, and keeps the tool working fine.
Design issues I wish Rockler would fix in a new model:
1. Use plastic that is hard to crack. The current model plastic can crack while it is storage something hits or bends it.
2. Screws should be flat or recessed to the surface of the plastic. The current model screws were probably chosen to prevent the plastic from cracking at the screw holes. See issue #1.
3. The unit will slip very easily and get out of alignment. Disaster even using spring clamps a must is not a guarantee. I have taken to placing the unit, drilling one hole, using a pin to index into the hole, drilling the remainder, then moving the jig and index pin and drilling the missing hole. This method has worked flawlessly.
4. At slower drilling speeds is is easier to ensure correct placement of a hand-held drill. Unfortunately the bit will clog and require frequent cleaning. The bit works very well at higher speeds, but the jig can wear faster. As others, I use a corded drill with this unit gets up to a higher speed more quickly than a battery-powered unit and I get consistent results. A bit of paraffin rubbed on the tip of the sleeve of the bit before use improves performance.
5. The "fence" or "handle" size is a problem. If it were sized for 3/4 inch sheet goods one could not use the "built-in" storage pockets for the drill. But 3/4 inch sheet goods are what one uses.
Item 5 is easy to fix-just use some hardwood to make a perfectly sized fence I used maple. Getting the screws to work with the new fence requires a bit of ingenuity.
I also made a small block "case" to hold the drills, wrench, extra pins, etc. This works better than the storage pockets, anyway. It may not be clear in the ad, but my unit will drill for both 1/4 and metric pins and also sleeved pins different drills. After my plastic cracked in storage, I re-made the case to enclose the entire plastic guide in the case.
I do recommend this product for furniture projects. I have used it for kitchen cabinets, and it worked, but I would not use it for any "production" work. It is just too slow and in production use it might be too easy for a slip to ruin a part.
After you own and use this jig for a while, it will probably be obvious how to quickly build your own jig that will work great for you. There are a lot of choices that work. Lexan TM works well if you want see-through characteristics. Sheet aluminum works if you learn how to reliably place the first hole. However, this jig has worked for me in every situation I have used it other than production so it is often used. I have special-purpose jigs that I have made to speed up production work.

I have tried free handing shelf pin holes without much sucsess,Peg boared works but you have to keep making new one's. With the Rockler "jig it" system, it makes it so easy. The 9/32" bit works great for the shelf pin sleeves. I found that just using the 1/4"bit for the shelf pins, can be a little sloppy, would recomend using the sleeves. Looking forward to trying the metric version out on my next cabinet. Thanks again Rockler.

The Jig It is fast to setup and use and creates accurate hole patterns. I wish it had a carbide tipped bit that would stay sharp longer and reduce tearout. Also the chip clearance between the bit and guide needs some work to keep it from clogging up.

The jig I have works great until you need to index more than two sets of holes. After drilling holes in some tall book shelves the shelfs were all wobbly. I discovered that the index hole is not the same distance from the first peg hole at both ends of the jig so when I flip the jig end to end to drill the other side of holes the peg holes get out of alignment. They ended up being almost 3/4 of a hole off. The index holes were almost a full millimeter off, which transfers to almost 5 millimeters after I had drilled 5 sets of holes. Other than that issue, it is simple and quick to use, I just can't use it on long runs of holes.

Not a bad product. If you are drilling into plywood you will need to keep the jig tight against the wood to avoid tear out or splintering. That is not the fault of the jig however, just a characteristic of plywood.

This is just one more of Rockler's products that I don't know how I've lived without. Picked one up for a quick shelving project for the shop and it has proven to be worth its weight in gold. It is by no means an exceptionally professional tool but for a skilled carpenter/handyman this is just the ticket. It got 4 stars because the self centering bit likes to clog and has to be cleared almost after each hole but it cleans itself out once you get the hang of it. Works like a champ!

This is the second jig I've bought for drilling holes for adjustable shelves, and it's much better suited to the jobs I have to do. The first required a router and worked reasonably well on case sides before they became part of a cabinet, but it was awkward if not impossible to use on cabinets that have already been installed. The Rockler jig make these jobs possible. Both jigs create holes that are a little too large for the shelf pins I have (also from Rockler), but I can live with the Rockler jig's holes.

This was a great time saving product for doing a wall of bookcases. It was fast and accurate, however I thought there was a bit of wood tear-out around many of the holes which I don't think is very attractive. If it made cleaner holes, I would rate this item excellent.

Received the Jig It and it performed as advertised. I agree with others who suggest that clamping it to the workpiece stabilizes the tool and ensures that it will not slip. Most importantly, though, the Jig It arrived from Rockler with a crack in the template. I called Rockler and they replaced the Jig It immediately. Good service wins my business every time.

Great product and an extreme time saver. With the 5mm there is a bit of tear out and the shavings tend to get clogged in the sleeve. I suggest the 1/4" bit (I have both) as it gives you a cleaner end product. I am only using the 5mm because the project requires it. If you NEED to use 5mm pins I suggest getting the 5mm pin support sleeves which require the 7/32 centering bit. The catch is the sleeves are a little more expensive and you will need a sleeve per hole.

I have owned this jig for several years and have used it several times with minimal success. The plexiglass allows the jig to slide around regardless of the amount of clamping. I have tried double sided tape which improves the process somewhat but it introduces other challenges. Also there is far too much play in using a pin and the inset is locked in to two settings which limits applications. Plain old peg board is far superior to this jig.

I purchased a 5mm shelving jig with the bit and holder. I used it with the walls of the shelves in place. It worked well except that the holes were a bit large for the 5mm shelf supports and the bit didn't make a clean hole. I replaced the 5mm bit with an ordinary 3/16 bit for metal. The finished holes were tight and cleaner. Clean holes may be a product of the material and technique. It seems to work better if the bit is kept at speed until it is completely withdrawn from the wood. Overall, a great product.

For the price, its a great value. If you only make an occaisional cabinet or bookcase then this is the jig for you, but if you need to make 100's or even 1000's of holes, you are in for a tedious job! The bit must be unclogged every few holes. It would be nice if they made a much longer jig as well. But when it can afforded, a spindle boring machine would make life much easier in the shop!

I bought this as a replacement for my old jig (same type). I've done maybe 40 cabinets with the old one. The only problem I've had is that over time the plastic wears a bit and allows the bit holder to bottom out and cut into the wood you're drilling. But I've always priced my shelf pins a little higher to cover a replacement jig.
Hint: Use spring clamps to hold the jig in position. The bit depth is adjustable with a set screw on the holder. I find it works better with a plug-in drill rather than battery operated. The higher speed drills cleaner.

Great Product!!! This is my second experience using this product for a large, repetitive drilling task. If your project involves turning flat lumber or "coated shelving material" into vertical shelving, this tool is a "must" for accurately and effortlessly locating 5mm or 1/4" dia. shelf pin holes. Recently used the 5mm drill guide ass'y from the shelving kit to re-drill holes for conceiled cabinet hinges on existing cabinets, using a modified single-hinge JIG IT plexi-template. Shelving plexi-template and drill ass'y provide holes are uniformly spaced, uniform depth and uniform diameter for shelf support pins.

Works great for shelving. Prior to this I would always make a custom jig for each project. Absolutely no tearout on maple veneer plywood. 5mm drill bit never got clogged. Had one problem with the first run of holes if I wasn't paying close enough attention. The jig would wander up from the bottom of the case and screw up the hole alignment. Here's a tip: start at the bottom, drill one hole, move the jig up and place an indexing pin in the hole. Now your holes stay locked. The storage compartment thumb latches did get in the way for one run of holes so I temporarily removed the covers. If you are doing adjustable shelving, get this jig!

The plexiglass jig is very handy and easy to use however since there are two sets of hole you can easily forget which set you are using and make a mistake. Use some blue tape to cover up the unused holes. Also, the bit depth is not adjustable so unless you are using 3/4 inch thick material you are out of luck. The plywood I drilled would build up in the bit occasionally. Still, this is a nice time saver if you can afford it.

I bought this for a project I am currently working on that requires a lot of shelves in multiple cabinets. This jig has saved me countless hours measuring and marking. I like the accuracy and convenience of the jig. The only problem I am having with it is that I am working with 1/2" MDF and the self centering bit provided in the jig tends to show through the other side of the panel making an unsightly mess and ruining the board. The self centering bit is a brad point and it's the brad point that pokes through. On thicker material it works great!

As many others have commented, this jig and the recommended bit make quick work of making adjustable shelving.

One complaint I have is that if you use it with shelf that is already assembled, the fastener that holds the handle to the jig stands about 1/8" proud of the jig. So you have one side raised 1/8" and the other side flat on the work piece. This made it a little more difficult to get a hole perpendicular to the surface. When I'm a little less busy, I will look for different fasteners or a second set of fasters for the other side so the jig is level with the surface.

Be advised that the jig is supposed to have each hole 1-1/4" apart, but if you measure the first hole to the last hole (across all 11 holes), the final hole is off 3/32". The significance of this means that you can't use the jig down one side of a board and up the other side. I did this and was off by 1/2" by the time I got to the end/beginning. The only way to get the holes to line up was to (1) use a story stick and identify regions of holes on both sides of the board, and (2) you will have to flip the location of the side stop from one side of the jig to the other side so that any misalignment is equally placed on both sides of the board. Other than that, the jig works fine.

Editor's note: when using this jig one always uses either the top of the cabinet or the bottom as the starting reference point for all runs of holes. Alternating start from top to bottom is not advisable.

Probably the best pre-fab shelf hole jig available but beware of its shortcomings. Jig handle screw heads not flush with jig and handle depth of 3/4". Must clear bit of material after each hole to get clean holes. Bit does not fit easily into storage compartment. Must use tape on material to prevent tear out. Must clamp jig to material to prevent movement and resulting holes too big causing loose fitting shelf pins. And don't press too hard or the plastic will crack!

I have used a lot of home made jigs in the past including peg board which if you have ever used it, the holes wear out if used repeticiously. The Jig-It and bit works very well. I am building kitchen cabinets for my mom and the jig made it a breeze to do the shelf pin holes. The only thing is like everyone else says, you have to make the jig stationary to use it. I have typically made my own shelf jigs from wood like a lot of cabinet guys but decided to give this jig a try on a large built in job I recently did. It worked WONDERFULLY. With my jigs I often have a little bit of play with the shelf rocking. I did not have that problem with one shelf with this jig. I also used heavy duty double sided stick tape to hold the jig in perfect place so that it wouldn't move as I moved up the holes, this way I didn't have to hold it in place and in a awkward position while I drilled with the other hand (I drilled after the unit was installed). I can't say enough about the jig. It works great and the price was great. I almost sold it to another guy on the job after I was done but I need it again soon. Can't say enough about it. I just completed both a base cabinet and a wall cabinet, and although I had made my own jigs for this in the past, the work went much quicker with the JIG IT unit. The only caution I would have is to remember that when you have a center divide in a cabinet, remember to offset the jig on opposite sides of the divide so you don't have through holes!

An excellent product for making quick work of drilling shelf bracket holes. After removing the clips for the two storage compartments, it can be used to fit flush over a 3/4" sheet. I used the jig without the handle attached and I was able to line up the jig perfectly with the use of shelf support pins and the 5mm and 1/4" indexing holes. I was able to do all the holes without removing the cabinet doors even though some of the spaces were awkward. My kitchen contractor told me about Rockler products so that I could get the shelves set up where we wanted them. The new cabinets only had holes at the 2 1/2" spacing and I was able to fill in the 1 1/4" holes with no difficulty. I used a cordless drill and even though I was using a rapid drill speed, the holes were perfectly drilled and the support pins and brackets fitted the holes without any looseness.
Thanks for a great product.

I found the jig very easy to use but I did get tearout on my plywood panels. Tape should prevent this. Be careful to order the right bit assembly. I did it wrong the first time and had to return the 1/4" bit and buy the 5 mm bit.

A great product. The holes were aligned dead straight. There was minimal tearout by using a slow feed rate. This is a great tool.

I had thought of making my own jig with some plexiglass or some plywood and bushings and using a drill stop. Was I ever thrilled when I saw this already made. The bit alone was the greatest. Since I had to use it on several already installed cabinets and didn't want to remove the hinges, I had to use it without the handle, but it still worked great!

This jig is a good idea but is poorly executed. First the indexing fence is 13/16" thick so if you want to use this on 3/4" sheet goods while lying flat on a bench you are going to have the jig riding proud of the material face. As if that weren't bad enough, the new storage bins which are a good idea - but poorly designed now add to that thickness of the fence - the total is about an inch. Forget using it in the field on Euro cabinets that have profile fillers. Again the fence and tabs will prohibit you from seating the jig flat on the side panels.
Another problem - though slight - are the fence mounting screws. They also protrude from the bottom of the plexi plate and cause the same issue as above- they don't allow the jig to lie flat inside a cabinet. They could easily be countersunk like they are on the top of the fence into the plexi - if it were thick enough !
All and all you are better off just buying the drill bits from this kit and just making your own jig it will be less frustrating for you.

A great jig . I've made some and used others. This is the simpliest option out their. The bit is great. And pins fit snug. A MUST HAVE!

Works great. Easy to use. I don't know how I ever did without it. Makes great straight lines with evenly spaced holes for shelf pins. Along with the specialized drill bit made all the holes the same depth. Recommend highly

Purchased a second and third bit size for the jig. Use for a custom medicine cabinet (1/2" walls) and wanted to use smaller pin sizes. Once the drill depth was adjusted, it worked well and fast, but still struggling a bit getting all four holes on the exact same plane.

I loved this product! It made quick work of an otherwise tedious task. I would have like the fasteners to be flush fit on the back side of the tool but it was still a great jig.

This is a very good jig at an economical price. Previously I had been using a homegrown jig I made using a strip of pegboard as the template. The jig here is a much more durable and easy to use solution, and combined with the bit it makes short work of a less than satisfying task.
While the bit compartments are a very nice touch, the knobs to those compartments can get in the way if you're using the jig on a cabinet that's already installed against a wall. This is because the thickness of the jig handle + the compartment knobs is greater than the thickness of a sheet of plywood . . . hence, the knobs prevent the jig from resting flat against the case side. The knobs can be removed and replaced, but it seems to me that doing this very many times will cause the knob connecter to break. So . . . drill your pin holes before you install!

This Jig is nice, but if you are going to use the "pin sleeves" for the shelf pins you need to remember the alignment holes are 1/4" or 5mm. This also makes it problematic when you want to put in a long string of holes as the sleeve holes make the alignment less than ideal. Also, remember the self centering bits are to be used on stock greater than 1/2". Otherwise you get small poke through holes in 1/2" stock. Guess I should have looked at the back of my test piece before using it on my production piece.

I use the Shelving Jig once so far. I had to assemble the parts in the package. This was easy and the instructions were very good. I did notice that the screw heads were not set in a counterbore so the plastic plate would sit flush on the work surface. Sure enough I pressed a little too hard and the plastic around one hole cracked. Very disappointing. I expected a better design and a durable material. I don't see how I can fix the crack.

Does a great job of punching equally distanced holes. Bit leaves rough holes. Don't use on fine furniture, it will leave you with a lot of sanding to do.

The jig worked well on the built-in bookcase I made, but the drill bit caused quite a bit of splintering. I'm not sure if something was wrong with the bit that came with the jig or if I was not using it properly. Howeveer, all the holes were tight and accurately spaced. I was able to dress up the holes with some sanding effort. Sure would have been a challenge without the Jig!

I like this jig and I’ve used it a lot. It has one major flaw. There is some slop between the hole in the jig and the mating nipple of the bit. I have measured this at 0.45mm. This doesn’t seem like much but if that error can be doubled each time you move the jig, and it adds up in a hurry. I recently built some tall cabinets that required moving the jig 6 times. The upper holes on the opposite side panels were off 4 to 5 mm or about 3/16”. If you are using Euro hinges and using these holes for hinge mounting, which I do, that’s beyond the range of adjustment. Also the shelves are tippy. If the first and last hole in the jig were tapered to give a perfect center fit it would be better.

With normal attention given to preventing movement, this jig works very well.
My only complaint is with the self centering bit. I just finished drilling almost 1200 shelf pin holes is a set of bookcases and roughly 8 of 10 required that the bit be cleared of jammed chips before drilling the next hole. Clearing the bit was simple, but very frustrating to have to do it after almost every hole. Speed and feed variations didn't seem to make much difference. If the bit could be redesigned to be self clearing, I'd rate this unit as a 5+.

This a great jig and the storage compartments in the handle are nice. Because of the aggressive (but high quality) drill bit I experienced tearout in plywood, but it can be eliminated by running the bit in reverse for a few seconds and then drilling forward. It slows things down a bit but produces nice clean holes.

This jig rocks! One small suggestion; A stepped pin would be helpful when needing to extend the length for continuous drilling as the jig tends to slip using just a shelf pin.

Great time saver. My only complaint was that I noticed a difference of about 1/16" between the top hole-to-jig top distance and the bottom hole-to jig bottom distance (if that makes any sense). Make sure to pay attention to your jig orientation (flipping, rotating, mirroring, etc) when drilling to ensure properly aligned holes.

I works better than the homemade one I've been using, which I had to clamp down as I went. They could improve the storage compartment doors by making them latch better. For ~$20 investment it is well worth the time savings when drilling shelf peg holes.

Overall a good product that needs some refinement/redesign. It does what it is intended for, easy to use and hard to make a mistake.
Two problems I see:
- There is too much tear-out around the holes. The bit should have more pronounced spurs at the outside.
- The side piece that is the stop should be thinner, less than 3/4" thick so that you do not have to lay your panel over the edge of the bench to drill it.

I had it clamped down to the wood and workbench and somehow either the jig or wood shifted so that about half the holes were no longer spaced evenly with all the rest of them. Screwed up two pieces of red oak plywood using this thing. Also I had to apply more pressure than I would have suspected trying to get the holes drilled.

The drill bit assembly was not centered... it wobbled, producing a hole that was larger than the 1/4 inch bit... and therefore too large for the shelf pin. I went back to my good brad point bit and a piece of peg board, and got perfect results. Not worth the $.

I'm surprised this had such a high rating. My experience was not as good. The tested holes (drilled in pine)were very clean however the bit still wiggled around more than I liked. Also, the pins were too loose in the wood and just about fell out. The pins were the correct size for the drill bit.

It does work very well and the bit stays sharp a long time. But I think if it were made out of polycarbanate instead of acrylic, I'd give it 5 stars. A fair price overall.

Overall, its an ok jig. I had to make modifications to make it useful. 1. There is nowhere to clamp it for small stock like a 2" post. 2. The 1-1/4 spacing is not 32mm; it's 31.75mm. This jig is all metric. All the inch dimensions are off - almost 1/8 from end to the other. 3. There are too few offsets. If you offset the fence holes from the shelf holes and add more holes, you can have multitple offsets. 4. Alignment marks would be a nice thing to add for centering and for locating the jig. 5. Door Latches on the fense do not work very well. 6. Keeping the bit square could be easier with bushings or a bigger foot on the bit side. As for my mods, I needed holes with a 1/2" offset. So I added my own longer fence that could then be clamped.

Jig is a great idea for simple shelf pin projects. However, the design is lacking. There are three bolts that protrude from the bottom of the handle which results in the jig resting on the three screws, instead of the length of the handle. This creates a poor clamping situation and a gap between the plexi jig and the workpiece. This results in the jig flexing everytime you drill a hole. It also leads to wood chips and dust getting between the jig and workpiece. Bottom line is that the attachment bolts should be flush with the bottom of the handle.

The jig is well made however the drill bit assembly developed a problem after about 12 holes. The bit catches when trying to drill and will not fully extend to hole depth. Quality of this part is poor.

I am brand new to woodworking and am very pleased with this jig. It was easy to use, and I figured it out on my own, although more detailed directions on how to assemble it would have saved me some time. The peg holes in my bookcase turned out perfectly, and I feel confident in my abilities to take on more projects!

I purchased this a while back and finally used it yesterday. Works great, however, I would like to see the holes start the same distance from the top and bottom. If I remember correctly, they start 3" from the bottom but 3.5" from the top. Since I drill the holes before assembly the would make it easier to flip the template between front and back. As it was, I had to dissemble it to put the guide on the other side to have the holes line up front to back. Still highly recommend this template.

Using it was bitter/sweet. It spaced the holes much better than I could dream of doing without it, But if you are using pin supports, I couldn't accurately lock the tool in place to drill the next series of holes because of the play between the pin and support. Best I could do was to push the tool up and keep drilling. This produced acceptable results but my shelves rock a bit.
