This little item works great. The instructions are not the best, but I found it worked fine if you insert the tool into the opening and don't let it touch any of the surfaces of the magnetizer/demagnetizer. It worked fine on a screwdriver that had been magnetized for several years. After demagnetizing it, I was able to cycle it back and forth several times easily.

Instructions: I purchased one of these tools about a year ago. It is not Rockler's brand but is an identical tool. The instructions were clear. To magnetize a screwdriver place the blade in the "+" slot and rotate the screwdriver clockwise around the slot several times. To demagnetize place the screwdriver in the "-" slot and rotate around the slot several times. By following these directions the tool works well.

I don't get it. If you thought this was going to demagnetize a magnetized tool that is not what it is for!
For example: This will magnetize a non magnetized screwdriver then it will demagnetize that same screw driver. If you already have a magnetized screwdriver it will not demagnetize it.
This is for non magnetized tools, to make them magnetic, then make the same tool non magnetic and it works perfectly.

I don't know how many people are in their workshops whacking their tools, but that doesn't work. If that does magnetize a screwdriver, the magnetic field created is very weak.
Despite what the poorly written instructions say on the packaging, it's not meant to magnetize screws. It should say screwdrivers.
It magnetizes very well, but the demagnetizer part only works on larger screwdrivers and tools. I magnetized two small screwdrivers (short and long Craftsman 1/8 inch flat-blade screwdrivers) but couldn't demagnetize them. I didn't have any problems demagnetizing larger tools.
The Magnetizer/Demagnetizer has limits, but for [price] it's worth it.

So far.....!
The product came w/o instructions for use. It would appear that none are needed however, I have not been able to magnetize any of the 3 steel screw bits placed in the + square as of yet. The bits have been in the + square for 4 days. I hate to sound and/or be stupid about this but any help with this would be appreciated. It's got to be something simple I am doing wrong. Believe it or not, I am not one to miss much, But for some reason this one has me stumped.
Editor's note: Usually all one should have to do to magnetize an item is to move it around back and for a few times in the + square. Setting the items in the square won't have as much effect as movement of the item within the square. Another thing to consider is that what may appear to be a steel item, may actually not have enough, or any, iron content and therefore be unable to be magnetized. And finally there may always be the possibility of a defect. Best way to check for this to to try a variety of other items, such as nails, screws, etc. to see if you get the same result.

While the instructions on the packaging weren't the clearest I've ever seen, if you study the package and the item itself, you can figure out how to make it work pretty well... I tested it on a few screwdrivers and the increase in magnetic strength was very noticeable.
fyi, in most cases, you can demagnetize a screwdriver or other small item by aligning it crosswise to the earth's magnetic field [usually by pointing it east-west and level to the ground] and giving it a sharp whack with another tool.
a VERY cheap way of magnetizing an object is to point it in the same direction of the earth's field [aim somewhere around Hudson Bay... :)], tilt downward a bit and hit it in a similar fashion.
:) earth science I strikes again!

I, have not been able to de-magnatize any of my tools so far with this product. Glad I only paid $1.99 for it. Disappointing!
