After using both the 8 and 10 inch sizes, I found them both efficient and easy to install. The salt top is a bit difficult to drill to size but other than that, they are easily drilled to proper sizes with standard bits.

These mills just plain work well. I have made about 20 of these to date. Yes the directions are terrible and you need to experiment with the order of steps you build the thing. Spend the time to build a prototype to avoid frustration with a nice piece of wood. Once the kinks are worked out they turn like a dream. Everyone just loves them, and the one we use on the table everyday is a couple of years old and functions like the day it was made. You can really experiment with designs to make a truly unique piece for yourself or to sell.

One more thing, you do not need a 1-1/16th drill bit, drill a 1 inch through hole and size the bottom to fit with a scraper. The only part that needs to be this size is the bottom where the works insert into the cavity about 1/2" deep

I found the plans accurate and the pepper grinder mechanism of good quality. Not sure what additional information the other reviewers were looking for. It was a fun little project that was pretty easy.

No offense to engineers, but why overthink something so simple as a pepper grinder. These mechanisms are simple, functional and robust. Have fun creating something different! I make bases that the grinder sets in keeping the grinds from leaking onto the table.

I too had some problem with the lack of instructions, since I never turned a pepper Mill or Salt Shaker before. I am a retired Mechanical/Optical Engineer, and finally figured it out after studying the mechanism for a time. My hobby is woodworking. I drew up a design using my ACADLT97 computer software to figure out the proper dimensions for the Pepper Mill and Salt Shaker.
I did not have a 1-1/16 diameter drill bit, so I made a tool using a 1/4-inch square x 1-inch long tool bit and broached two keyway slots 180° apart and one-inch deep for the bridge bracket to slide into. Everything worked out fine.

The "Tech info" only shows the size of the wood needed for assembly. There are two diagrams. At first I thought the left diagram was for a different version of the pepper mill. It is the "Salt Shaker", but is not labled. The right diagram shows some sizes, but is incorrect for the lower middle part of the assemble. I have included a picture of the kit with the pieces assembled in the correct order.
I am an Engineer, and it took me quit a while to figure this out. I have put thousands of kits together, and what is provided is not instructions.
The parts should be numbered, and some words telling what order the parts should be put together. Some words on the minimum size of wood, and maybe some preparation instructions would be nice.
I will put together some instructions, and put it on this review site in my next submission.
Rockler has always been very good at providing premium products. This kit is no exception. It just needs some instructions. Particularly for those just starting out.

Absolutely no directions are included. There is a x-section of the assembled parts, but no identification of what part goes where. I paid $15 for the mechanism and can't even use it due to lack of directions.

Editor's note: Instructions included with this mechanism can be viewed by clicking on the link under the "Tech Documents" heading in left hand side bar of this offer.
