I just received the two boxes I ordered. Shipping was very fast as always with Rockler. I opened each box and went through them quickly and overall I am very happy with the contents. I got a good mix of Oak, Cherry, Maple, Walnut, and Birch between the two boxes. One pretty nice piece of burl Walnut that is 1 1/2 by 12 or so and one very nice piece of quarter-sawn white oak that is 4/4 x 6 x 8 roughly. I got a few very nice small bowl blanks that are approx 6/4 x 8 x 8 and a variety of other sizes just as described in the description.. I know this batch will keep me busy through Christmas and hope to make some nice gifts for family and friends. I would buy this again in a heart beat. I had previously ordered two of the exotic cutoff boxes and they were great also. Keep up the great work Rockler. Opening these boxes is like getting a gift.

Purchased one of the hardwood boxes. Just finished sawing to yield just over 2.5 sq ft of 1/8" which I will use for laminating, 11 large knife scales for kitchen or hunting, 6 small shallow bowl/plates 5"-6" diameter, 8 turning squares 1 1/2 to 2" square X 6"-9" long, enough 1/2" to 1" pieces to yield 7 - 2 1/2 -3 1/2 X 4" laminated turning squares for small pepper mills etc, 7 - 3/4" pen blanks and enough 1/4" stock mostly walnut to make 23 steak/paring knife handles. I'm happy!!!!

As a small box builder I find these assortments very useful. I've ordered two of the mixed wood and one of all maple so far. I'd say about 95% of the wood can be used for my projects and I'll find something to use the other 5% for, glue blocks etc. All and all a good product at a reasonable price.

First time ordering the maple hardwood blanks from Rockler. An assortment of sizes and and thickness. Very impressed with fast response and delivery. Although I have not had the opportunity to indulge in using any of the blanks for my clock casing projects, the rating that this purchase deserves is a five star recommendation.

I have bought 3 boxes of this product and 2 boxes of the Exotic Cuttoffs as well. The mixed hardwood assortment is great. The walnut was limited in the boxes i recieved but still great. The first exotic box was not great, lots of smaller odd shaped wood, but the second box is great...paduka, yellow heart and plenty of other stuff in really good sizes. I made the cutting board that is attached with my first boxes.

Initially I was skeptical to order this as I feared the worse. However, I was extremely surprised and pleased when this was delivered, quickly I might add, and I opened the box to find a very useful assortment of wood that I can utilize in my turnings as well as small projects. I was so satisfied that I just ordered another box. I'm hoping the 2nd box is not a duplicate. Anyway, I do a lot of segmented bowl turning and the wood I received is great for that.
I highly recommend this product.

I ordered the hardwood assortment on sale and am very happy with the contents. Generally, almost all the pieces were usable; met or exceeded my expectations. I like having a few assorted scraps for small projects or accents. I also like not having to cut into a larger board for a small piece. I just ordered a second box. The customer rating for this product may tend to be more subjective depending on the intended use and how resourceful you care to be.

I just received my first order of the mixed hardwood to find that three of the larger pieces of Oak have several large checks, and one piece of the mahogany has somewhat of a cup to it. I wasn't expecting Grade A lumber, but nor was I expecting something that I can't use at all. Either way, the box will be overall helpful.

I got pretty much what was described. A few pieces aren't usable for much of anything but most are decent pieces. I got it to have a few "spare pieces" available for when you want an accent piece or need something extra. Don't order it if you think you'll get exactly what you need. You'd be better off ordering it directly. But for building up some stock in your shop, its a good deal.

As a turner, this assortment did not yield a lot to work with, other than a couple pieces. However, I am interested in learning to glue up interesting blocks of different woods, and these "scraps" will provide the opportunity to do that. Alternatively, I could have gone to the local hardwood store and asked for scraps and obtained a similar result. If I produce something notable from these particular scraps I will update my review.

I recently received my box and am pleased with its contents. I rated it a 3 Good only because I don't see any reason to get overly excited about the contents. There are a lot of nice pieces in then box. But they should update the description to include "may contain rough sawn pieces and 1/8" thicknesses.
It is a gab bag after all, so I see no reason to get carried away with a 4 or 5 rating. Unless you get some real exotic wood.
Would I recommend buying this? Sure, it always good to get a surprise and getting this box can be just that. Would I buy this box on a regular basis? No.
So, if you decide to buy this box. Understand it is a grab bag or box you may get great stuff, you may not. But be realistic with the review, if you write one. Just because you do not get a box of great pieces, don't slam the contents. Look at the potential of what you did receive.

I've just purchased a Delta Midi lathe from a friend who was upgrading, I've discovered a new passion. The pieces here were made from the mixed hardwood box. I added a few pieces of odd's and ends I had on hand but 80% was from your box. They served my purpose well by allowing me to experiment with various combinations of woods. A very good value.
I'm ordering another box today.

I've picked up at least three of these boxes, and each one I've gotten has included a worthwhile selection of sizes, shapes, and species. I'm an artist more than a traditional woodworker, so usability of weird bits may be slightly higher for me.
One thing I'll note, though, is that the world of wood continues to conspire against me, because each box I've gotten must've been at least 40% Cocobolo - it's one of the only substances in existence to which I actually have a negative physical reaction.

The order came quickly with seems to be a very positive Rockler trait. I make small toys and boxes so half of the pieces were useable for me right out of the box. A few pieces needed to be cut down for use. And one large 'chunk' of oak I'll probably use for a base for something. Only one piece of walnut was not useable. And with a 15% off coupon I would definitely buy this item again.

I make small boxes, picture frames, scrollwork & fretwork and a few other things. Rockler offering an assortment box like this allows someone like me to be able to work with quality hardwoods at a very affordable price. The assortment as usual was a mix of unbelievable pieces. Taking each piece out of the box and handling them is a pleasure in itself. I had ideas for just about every piece I held. These are not cheap cutoffs!! This is quality stuff that I know I will continue to purchase from ROCKLER along with anthing else pertaining to woodworking that I might need. Thanks Again ROCKLER, byrdman SLC,UT

I ordered the oak hardwood selection. It was mostly 3/4" thick but there were several 1/2" thick pieces as well. Some pieces had splits or were not flat. However, in general, I think it was good value for the money. Thus far I have used the oak to make a 1/8" box joint jig and sled for my TS-mounted router table.

This is a great value for the money. I received a mix containing at least one piece of the listed species (Oak, Maple, Birch, Cherry, Walnut and Mahogany), plus some aromatic cedar. I mainly use the pieces for testing and keeping a catalog of various finishes, creating small jigs in cases where MDF isn't suitable, miter splines, and small boxes. There are some unusable pieces that are either too small or defective, but only a minor amount. I only wish that there were less red oak (about 30% of my shipment).

With that said, it would be a great idea for anyone who does projects that include a variety of exotic species. You never know when you are gonna need a dowel pin, or drawer knob. All around 2 thumbs up.

I have been ordering these boxes for years and I've noticed a decrease in the exotic woods and quality of the wood recently. I've received poorly glued together as well as laminated pieces that are difficult to use. The boxes are sold has hardwood but over the past year more and more softwoods, such as pine and soft poplar, have been added to the box so that the boxes are now approx half hardwood of the varieties listed and half softwoods. Some pieces are not useable at all, but overall I am satified with the product for it's value. I love to open up a box to see if I've received any nice treasures. My children and many children across America are injoying items made with this wood. I can not find a better deal anywhere. Where else can I have 20 lbs. of wood deliverd to my door for 10 bucks? I do miss the Walnut boxes though (hint, hint). Thanks Rockler! My talent in woodworking has come from pratice with this product.

Very disapponted this time. The last box of maple yielded a wide variety of cuts and thicknesses. Overall worth the $'s. Not much other that basic hardwoods, mostly oak, a little cherry, and a little walnut. I had to simply throw some of it away. None of it is any longer than about 12 inches and in fact although it is descibed as being up to 16 inches (which I was hoping for) the box it came in wasn't but 12"s or so. I was able to utilize some of it for some small projects and probably would order again.

It's great to have around for miscellaneous small projects, and the different woods are really nice because I don't have to use any colored stains or finishes to make interesting looking toys, games, and puzzles for the kids. (And it's always nice to hear the other dads ooh and aah over the unique, "exotic" woods, too)
DEFINITELY worth getting if you're often looking for "just a small piece of....." Each box I've ordered has had many different sizes and types of wood. Can't beat it for 20 bucks!

I've been buying these boxes for years and have noticed a drastic reduction in the quality of wood that is being sold. Much of it is severely flawed or has been through a router and is only good for firewood. With the price hike it's just not worth my money. Received my box with high hopes that numerous small but satisfying projects would be fulfilled. I was sorely disappointed. About 1/4 of the content was material cut so thin that it almost qualified as veneer. I may be able to sandwich it to make it work. Only three pieces of any size were actually in the box. They were the wax coated-checked ends of Canary wood. I thought I might laminate them into something until I realized that they were all cupped and twisted beyond use. The rest of the items looked like a pen-maker had gone through his blanks and rejected items for splits or inclusions and the rejects were what ended up here. I undertstand that this is advertized as cut offs and ends but just tossing all the trash in a box and calling it usable does not impress me.

I think the concept for this is very good, take scraps that are too good to throw away and sell them in boxes for those that can use the smaller pieces. However, I think quality control is a real issue. I was not disappointed with the size of the pieces. I expected misc. lengths and widths. What I didn't want were pieces that are waxed (ends that are waxed to prevent splitting of the good portion of the wood), softwood in a hardwood sampler (last I knew, aromatic cedar is a softwood), nor pieces with bark all over them. By my calcs, I am paying about 6-7 bucks a board food for the pieces. I think Rockler could try and make sure that the pieces are worth salvaging. Some of the pieces were nice, others were downright horrible.
Point being is that we are both doing each other a favor. I could use some good scraps to work on intarsia, inlays, small crafts, etc. And on the other end, the company doesn't have to throw away good scrap and can make an additional profit on the cutoffs. Enforce a little quality control and this would be a good deal for all.

I had ordered 2 more boxes since we were pleased with the last box, but 1 of the new boxes were about 40% cedar and the rest was scraps of trim pieces. The other box was O.K. it had a couple pieces of Babinga, which kinda covers the OOPS on the other box and it also had a couple pieces of others exotic pieces that I really can't classify, and it finally came with plans the profile says,[] But over all it is a great price for good small craft wood, for scroll saw, pen, fret work.

A nice selection of wood but I was disappointed to find a 1 3/4"x6"x8" chunk that has a huge broken knot right in the center. You expect some waste, but it is hard to imagine any use for this substantial and heavy piece, except perhaps a few pen blanks from the sides. This was clearly cut off as a waste piece and should have been sent to the wood stove rather than sold to me.
I also ordered the Maple Assortment and was much happier with it.

The pieces were lovely. The only problem is that they were way too short. This is advertised as 6-15" long. They came in a box that was only 13" long. The longest piece (1) was 12 1/4". I needed pieces that were 12" long. Most of the pieces were shorter than 8". It's not at all what is advertised and I was very disappointed.
Editor's note: sizes noted are within ranges advertised.

First time ordering box, most of wood looked like it was cut offs from someone cutting out the bad spots in the lumber, won't order again and would not recommend.

This is a good selection - but not really usable for my needs. Pieces are very short, obviously left-overs and cutoffs. Various widths, lengths and thicknesses. Longest piece was appx 9 inches. If I had a mini-lathe, I might be able to use most of it for various turnings - but I don't. I probably will NOT purchase this again.

Ordered 20 lb. box of mixed hardwood. Was suprised to find 6 pieces bigger pieces that were total unusable. I would have thought it would had most all usable wood. Rest of small pieces usable. Would take chance on another box later.

I bought two boxes to give it a try and only found several pieces I could use. I was disappointed to find tiny pieces of wood 2x3 inches, and even a large chunk of pine definitely not hardwood. It felt like a couple of good pieces were included and the rest was junk thrown away as unusable. To be fair maybe I just got some bad boxed, but at price that's small consolation.

I ordered one box and am not impressed. Maybe I got a bad egg, but most of the box was oak, only a couple pieces of maple, cherry, and walnut. The largest piece of oak was only rough cut, and the second largest piece has a split going right through the whole piece. The only walnut piece worth mentioning has a big knot knocked out of it that makes about 1/3 of it useless. I know it's supposed to be cutoffs, etc. but I assumed it was pieces of wood too small to sell on their own, not too poor.

Very disappointing in what was received none of the pieces was over 8-9" most were 4-6" long. What was wide was short. Was expecting more a variety, most of what was in the box was light colored wood and even looked like pine and cut offs from 2x6'S that you would buy at a home center. Two pieces of dark wood that were small that you would need a lot more of them to do anything with. Over all very disappointing with this would not buy again or recommend. I read the reviews and know some people were happy guess they were lucky and got a good box.

I will give this three stars because although I wouldn't buy it again I was not so disappointed that I'm going to call up and complain. I bought two boxes and the second one had a decent amount of walnut but I didn't get any Cherry or Mahogany but it did have 4 kinds like they said. I would say take a risk and give this a shot though it was exciting opening it up!

The application I have for the assorted woods, require each piece to be 1/2 inch thick. I have ordered 4 boxes and have many different types of wood. The larger thickness pieces are no good for my application without a shaper. I don't feel like the expense for a shaper is justified at this time. I'm still looking for a supplier for 1/2" end cuts of assorted woods. This is a hobby, and I don't sell anything to justify the cost of individual wood types. I do like the product, and its assortments. I just wish the assortments could [all] be 1/2" thick.
