These inserts both look and function great. However, they can be somewhat difficult to install - especially if you have "ham" hands, as I do. Having installed thousands of these inserts in both my own house, as well as cabinetry I've made for customers, I've developed my own installation tool that might be of help to others. I purchased a Robert Sorby Aluminum Micro Handle sold by Rockler, and others and inserted the shaft of a 1/4" drill bit, that I had shortened with bolt cutters wear face and eye protection during this process, into the Sorby handle. The shelf inserts fit onto the protruding 1/4" shaft and allow the installer to hammer the inserts into the shelf hole without nailing their fingers. The entire assembly probably costs around $25, but it's worth it if you have hundreds to install. The added bonus is that the tool also keeps the inserts from deforming when being inserted into the hole, which can also happen from time-to-time.

As expected I've used them before. I liked the fact the Rockler packages 16 in a package - my hardward store only has them in 4s, enough for only one shelf, which is crazy when you're building a bookcase. Rockler's service is excellent, they got here in notime, when I found I didn't want to purchase them locally.

Rockler has terrific customer service. When I ordered the shelf pins and sleeves in Antique Brass I received one color antique brass pins and a different color antique brass sleeve. Apparently the manufactuer had changed the color. One Email to Rockler and they sent me the matching sleeves at no charge.

Back in April 07 I reviewed the pin sleeves as excellent. Jonathan Hamilton, Accident Maryland's 10/18/07 review of the sleeves gave me the idea of making the insertion tool shown. See the attached photos. A few minutes on my lathe has saved me a lot of time by making the insertion quick and easy. No hammering necessary, simply push it in for a nice press fit.

I've used the brass pins and they look very nice in bookcases. I thought they fit a bit loose in the holes though, however, I will use them again in the future.

Rockler is the only place I've ever been able to find these little gems. Along with the shelf pin jig to space everything out evenly, these sleeves add an extra touch to any project where shelf pins are used.

This really is an excellent product for high end, finished look. Use 1/4" self centering bit with drill jig- makes precise pin placement easy. We just used antique bronze with red mahagony bookshelves.

Overall they work pretty good. However the sleeve's inside diameter could be a scoosh (technical term) smaller to make a tighter fit for the pins. They tend to sag just a bit. 1 wrap of electrical tap or a dip in some epoxy and they fit nice and tight yet still removable.

We used nickel pins with nickel sleeves on some book case units that we painted white. We found these easy to use and install. You can use these pins without the sleeves, but adding the sleeves dress up the look of the holes for these pins.

I am a general contractor and most of the homes I build are $750,000 and up. I have been using the pin supports from Rockler for a long time. They add a quality touch and keep the holes from hollowing out.

It is amazing how classy these little brass sleeves make a project look. I used them with stained oak and they become a highlight of the project. The pins do go into them a bit loose, but that does make it easy to change the shelves. It wouldn't hurt at all to have them just a bit tighter.
If I had more options for rating, I would probably give them a 4.5. When posed with a 4 or 5 they are closer to 5. Well worth the price!

The brass pins and brass sleeves really dressed up my project. An excellent choice, sort of the icing on the cake. Instead of dull bare holes drilled in oak veneered plywood, the sleeves are attention getters (turning an "A" project into an "A+").

The pins work great and fit snuggly into 1/4" holes and add an appealing quality to the work especially if used in conjunction with the sleeves. However, I find that the pins are too loose fitting when used with the sleeves. The pins fall out too easily. I think the manufacturer needs to tighten up the fit somewhat.

Looks great, but wish I had thought of getting extra sleeves for the extra holes that make the shelves adjustable. I'm glad I didn't need all 32 pins, since both packs were short and I ended up with only 29.

For very little additional money, the antique brass sleeves added a nice, finished quality to our custom book cases. Kick it up a few notchs for just a few bucks? That's a no-brainer!

I have been using these pegs in brass for years and now I will be using them in other colors now. They are well made and nicely finished, a nice addition to my built in cabinet jobs. They work really well with my Jig-It drilling jig system.

Purchased these to use with the sleeves. Found that the pin fit into th sleeve was too loose for my taste. Pin ID was .240 inches and sleeve ID was .249 inches. I decided to use just the pins and found they look great used that way…very elegant. I use a 15/64? diam. drill for the holes to get a nice snug fit.

Eh, I'm not sold on the finish. They're shelf supports, and the do a fine job of supporting shelves, but the finish isn't as bright and lustery (is that a word?) as I'd like. My application didn't put them at eye level, so it's no sweat, but if they were going on a bookshelf I may be disappointed in the quality. It's like they were never buffed out after coming out of their coating bath. Almost like an old penny, but not as orange.

I used the sleeves to provide a finished look to an antique wardrobe which I modified as an entertainment center for my daughter. Not only do the sleeves provide provide good support for the pins but also add an attractive appearance to the finished product. Nice product.

The pin supports add a quality finished look. The unused holes prior to the use of the sleeves always appeared to give the project the apppearence that something was unfinished. I was elated to find such an item an am pleased with the finished and professional look.

I just finished a library using the JIG IT Shelving Jig to place the 860 pin holes for the 43 adjustable shelves in the room. It looked good, but once I installed the pin supports, it just made it look totally professional. Great fit, especially with a little lacquer overspray in the holes.

When building cabinets with adjustable shelves, this is the only way to go. After finishing the insides of the cabinet case, install these shelf pin insets for a highend look! I have used these for years and never had a complaint from a customer.

These pin and sleeves really finish off a project. Being a contractor I only wish that they sold the sleeves in larger packages as I can use a couple hundred on a large project. The black finish has rather poor rust resistance, probably just black oxide finish instead of black zinc plating.

I use these on all my orders which call for adjustable shelves. They give a professional, finished look to the ugly shelf pin holes. A 9/32 hole is recommended, but I like a 1/4 hole better. I made a jig for installation. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the center of a 2" X 2" piece of plywood and glued in a short piece of 1/4" dowel. I place the sleeve on the dowel, locate it in the hole, and tap the plywood with a hammer to drive it in. A perfect fit.

I have used many different methods to support adjustable shelving for book shelves and display cabinet shelves. 1/4" or 5 mm brass pins give me the quality look that I strive for in my work. I have found that the brass sleeves take my work to the next level, adding that extra touch that goes with a high end custom cabinet.
For those of you who may want to install the sleeves in your next project; first finish the interior before you install the sleeve; also a helpful hint is to use a pair of bent nose pliers to hold and locate the sleeve then tap it in with a mallet.

The pin fits very loosely in the sleeve causing the pin to sack which makes the shelf sit very dangerously loose. This both looks terrible and doesn't work properly. The Brusso product seems better though there's no 10/32 self-centering drill bit,
for the Rockler shelf template.

I was building a large set of bookshelves (8 units 2'x 8' each) and ordered 10 packs of pins. The bad news: All but two packs had 15 or fewer pins. The good news; Rockler sent me an extra pack after I told them the problem, but it delayed the finished product.

These pin supports are nice, but the sleeves are junk. The pins fall right out of them. It seemed like it would be nice to have the finished look of the sleeves, but beware, the pins are very loose when put into the sleeves.

We have been using shelf pins in our cabinets for years. I just made a purchase of pins & sleeves for a cabinet package we built for an architects home. We installed over 800 sleeves only to realize that the pins are incredibly loose fitting in the sleeves. The sleeves fit the hole in the cabinet perfect but the pin is loose in the sleeve.

I used several hundred of the 1/4" pins and sleeves for shelving. The pins fit too loosely in the sleeves, and the sleeves too loosely in 9/32" holes. I've glued the sleeves and taped the pins to get a barely satisfactory result. Before purchasing, I read every review here on Rocker's site and researched available options reasonably throughly. Based on the reviews noting exactly these issues, I expected problems. However, I went ahead with these pins because I could not find any that seemed any better. While I was able to get them to work and achieved the desired look, I strongly recommend looking for alternatives - especially if you are picky about tolerances and performance.

These pins seem to be too short as they slip out of the sleeves with the smallest bump. the sleeves are chrome as is the pin. It is no fun to try to install a shelf and have the pin fall out! The pin holes were drilled with a drill press with a 9/32" drill bit as per the catalog and the sleeves fit just fine. I substituted these pins with 1/4" maple dowels which were a tight fit and should support the shelves just fine.

The sleeves are too large for the 1/4 inch hole made by the 1/4" self centering bit... I had to ream out the holes with the next size up bit, then tap them in with a hammer, only to find that the 1/4" pins are loose in the sleeves and fall out when you are putting the shelf in. Better just use no sleeve which fits tightly in the 1/4 inch hole. I'd return them but it would not really be worth the shipping.
Editor's note: The 1/4" bit is used if one is using the optional sleeves for the 1/4" pins. If using the sleeves for the 1/4" pins one needs to use the 9/32" bit, if using the optional sleeves for the 5mm pins one needs to use the 7/32" bit.
