Guitar Manufacturing using Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Concepts - with Prof. Tom Singer
Overview: This 3 credit hour course is a collaboration between Sinclair Community College and Rockler Woodworking and Hardware. The class examines the design and manufacture of electric guitars. Students investigate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Concepts as they design, build, finish and perform the final set-up on their own electric guitars. Topics range from the actual science of stringed instruments to the use of Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machines. Because this course is for college credit students will be graded and there will be some math and writing assignments. The guitar kit for this course is available at Rockler for $175. Register on-line at www.sinclair.edu. This course is available to non Sinclair students for a $25 registration fee in addition to course and fees.

Introduction to Stringed Instrument Building - with Ryan J Cobb
Overview: This class is a twelve week advance demo. Journeyman luthier, Ryan Cobb, of Ryan Cobb Guitars, will cover the fundamental skills, processes and jigs necessary to build acoustic guitars as he builds two of his instruments with the class. The aim of this course is to give the student a realistic idea of what it takes to get into building acoustic guitars as either a professional or advance hobbyist. Topics covered in this course include but are not limited to: Tonewood selection, Master Template construction, dimensioning and jointing Top and back plates, riving and prepping brace Stock, sound hole rosettes, headstock veneer, inlays advanced X Braces, brace layout, bridge plates, brace carving, bending sides , binding, and purling strips, neck and heel blocks, body assembly, binding ,a neck construction and carving , bridges and fingerboards , cutting frets and fret Installation, joining neck to body, Initial neck-set, finishing, buffing and final neck-set, bridge installation (Nut and Saddle making) and the basic set up of the finished instrument.

The class meets twice a week for two to three hours a session depending on material to be covered. The whole series will run over the course of 12 to 14 weeks. At this time, class size is limited to ten students. A fee of $36.00 per two day course, should be paid by the first night or each course and covers both days of the class. Students who pay for the whole course in advance receive a 10% discount and are billed for only 12 sessions.
