Overview: This workshop will focus on experiencing the fun and satisfaction of creating a one of a kind gift on a wood lathe. Each participant will choose from a selection of available kit options and be given the opportunity to work on a wood lathe to complete the project. This workshop will be on a first come first served basis. We do encourage that interested participants pre-register to help with staffing and coordination. It is recommended that student bring their own pair of safety glasses. More information available at the store.

Please note that the cost varies based on the kit and materials chosen.

Overview: One of the most important and often overlooked aspects of woodworking is how to apply a quality finish. It is the finish that celebrates the work that has gone into creating any woodworking project. Learn how to create a finish that both protects and enhances your piece. The class will focus on aspects such as surface preparation, application of stain, and the use of topcoats. All materials are included. Student needs to bring a pair of safety glasses.

Overview: Hand planes are among the most common woodworking tools. Most shops have at least one or two of kicking around. The problem is that most folks don't know how to set them up or use them properly. This class will cover the basics: Setting up the plane; Sharpening; Tuning and using the plane for edge jointing, planing end grain and surfacing. Students are required to bring one or more hand planes of any type.

Overview: This is the class for a student with some spindle turning experience that is looking to branch out into other types of turning. The “Introduction to Turning” class is recommended as a prerequisite. The class will focus on techniques and tools used in turning a simple bowl. The student will turn their own bowl. All materials are included. Student needs to bring a face shield.

The student will learn a variety of techniques in turning between centers including the proper use of a variety of turning tools. Overview: Students will learn about the design and construction of kitchen or shop type cabinets. The class will focus on face frame construction utilizing pocket hole joinery and standard box construction. The students will participate in the construction of a base unit and will build their own sample wall unit that they can take home. All materials will be provided. Students do need to bring a pair of safety glasses and their own hearing protection.

Overview: Learn the techniques necessary to make machined half-blind dovetail joints and through dovetails. Half-blind joint is most commonly used in drawer construction. Through dovetails are used for box construction. Although the class will use the Rockler Dovetail jig, differences with the Porter Cable Dovetail jig will be discussed. Each student will be given the opportunity to set up and practice each joint. All materials are included. Student needs to bring a pair of safety glasses and hearing protection.

Overview: Building shutters has traditionally been a process that required a lot of set up work, jigs and other assembly devises that made for a demanding and challenging process. With the introduction of the Rockler Shutter system much of this has changed. Most woodworkers with modestly outfitted shops can produce shutters that rival custom made shutters at a fraction of the cost. Each student will learn all of the steps necessary to design and build plantation shutters. The student will walk away with a shutter that they have built. Shutter making materials are included. Student will need to provide their own Rockler Shutter Template kit as well as a pair of safety glasses.

Overview: In this class the student will be introduced to the exciting possibilities of woodworking with the use of a computerized CNC machine. The class is structured around the Rockler CNC Shark and V-Carve Software. Each student is required to bring their own computer with The V-Carve software loaded. Free demonstration versions can be downloaded through the Rockler website. All other materials are included. Students do need to bring a pair of safety glasses and their own hearing protection.

12:30 - 4:30 pm 		Basic Marquetry - with Dave Fleming
Overview: Students will learn the basics of creating marquetry with the "double-bevel" cutting technique. The class will explore using both hand ("jewelers") saws and power scroll saws, and will work with both thin, commercial "sliced" veneer and thicker sawn veneer. In addition to learning and practicing the methods, students will make a simple leaf-and-branch marquetry panel. Recommended reading: The Art of Marquetry (1997), Craig Vandall Stevens. Materials will be supplied. Some special tools are required, which will also be provided for use during class, although students having their own tools are encouraged to bring them.

Overview: In this class the student will learn the steps necessary to design furniture using Google Sketch up. The class will consist of two sessions with a stretch break. The sessions will focus on basic tools,creating and manipulating shapes and objects to form drawings of furniture. The student will also learn to apply textures and colors and start to build a library of components that can be used in drawing other furniture projects. Each student will need to bring their own computer with Google Sketch up already installed. Google offers a offers a free version of Sketch up that is easy to download.

10:00 - 4:00pm 		Build a Guitar part 1 of 6 6 Session Class - with Paul Hamlet
Overview: In this class the student will learn how to build a solid body Electric Guitar from scratch. It is designed for the wood worker with a strong interest in building musical instruments. Student will be able to select raw materials and electronic components so material costs will vary based on selection. Class will cover all aspects of the guitar making process from body to neck. At the end of the class the guitar will be ready for finishing. Overview: A more challenging turning class where the student turns a box with a fitted lid.This class involves turning between centers, hollow form turning and turning to precise diameters with the use of calipers to produce a vessel with a fitted lid. Overview: A more challenging turning class... A treen is actually small wooden ware or sometimes referred to as treenware. It can be something as simple as a stirring stick, a "spurtle" or perhaps a carved spoon. In this class the projects will be a little more challenging involving bowl turning skills and hollow form turning. This class should present a nice challenge for a student who has some experience with bowl turning. All materials are included. Student needs to bring a face shield.

Overview: In this 6 hour class the student will learn the use a variety of power tools from the jointer to the router table as they take a piece of rough stock to completion of a simple project like a cutting board. Learn how to take rough lumber to smooth straight boards through the use of a jointer, thickness planer and table saw. Then the student will glue up and shape the cutting board with tools like the Bandsaw and Router table . All of this in 2 3 hour sessions with an hour for lunch.
