Classes and Workshops

Hand Tools I: Planes and Scrapers - with David Tilson

Date: February 28, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Believe it or not, there really are a lot of woodworking tasks that can be done faster and better with hand tools!  Learn the ancient arts of hand planing and scraping, which tools you’ll need, how to tune them up and get the most from each.    Advance reservations are required.   Students may wish to bring their own hand plane, block plane, card scraper, “mill smooth” file, and burnisher to use and discuss during the class.

Skill Level: Beginner

Class Fee: $50

Sharpening - with David Tilson

Date: March 7, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: In this class you’ll learn how to sharpen common woodworking tools using methods such as water- and oilstones, bench grinders, the Tormek and Work Sharp grinding systems, and more.  Topics include bevel angles, secondary bevels (micro bevels) and hollow grinds; polishing compounds, rust removal & prevention, and diamond stones.  Advance reservations required.  It is strongly recommended that students bring their own tools to sharpen, and learn on their own sharpening equipment if possible.  However, this also might be a great way to try out that shiny blue grinder you've been eyeing for months now!

Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate

Class Fee: $50

Hand Tools II: Dovetails - with David Tilson

Date: April 4 & April 5, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm & 12pm - 4pm

Overview: Learn the techniques for creating beautiful hand-cut joinery, including dovetails.  This two-session course (Saturday, 1 to 5, and Sunday, 12 to 4) builds on the skills learned in Hand Tool Basics, moving into the use of hand saws, chisel skills, and more!  Advance reservations are required.  Students should bring their own chisels, mallet, dovetail or tenon saw, and sharpening stones, or plan on purchasing them at the time of the class.  An optional  marking knife and marking gauges for marking out dovetail joints can also be helpful.  (A few tools may be available for loan, and advance arrangements are required.)

Skill Level: Intermediate

Class Fee: $60

Router Basics - with Don Chafey

Date: April 11, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: If you want to expand your woodworking repertoire, the router is the tool to master.  This class covers everything from how to choose the best router for the job to cutting and milling operations with handheld and table-mounted routers.  Students will complete a project by pattern routing, making simple inlays, and forming edges. Reservations are required. Students must bring their own safety glasses, hearing protection, and routers with ¼" collets (plunge & fixed bases if available).  A very limited number of routers are available for students who cannot bring their own router; reservations must be made in advance.  All materials costs are included.

Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate

Class Fee: $65
