Classes and Workshops

Router Basics - with David Tilson

Date: October 18, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: If you want to expand your woodworking repertoire, the router is the tool to master.  This class covers everything from how to choose the best router for the job to cutting and milling operations with handheld and table-mounted routers.  Students will complete a project by pattern routing, making simple inlays, and forming edges. Reservations are required. Students must bring their own safety glasses, hearing protection, and routers with ¼" collets (plunge & fixed bases if available).  A very limited number of routers are available for students who cannot bring their own router; reservations must be made in advance.  All materials costs are included.

Veneering - with David Tilson

Date: October 25, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Use veneers without fear! This class focuses on the types of veneer work used in fine furniture and accessories, and we’ll see why proper use of veneers can actually improve the quality of your woodwork. Using modern materials and techniques, we’ll select and prepare real wood veneers, create patterns and designs with parquetry, and look at application tools and techniques as we make a small burled panel, such as might be used on the lid of a box.  Advance reservations required. Students must bring their own sharpened veneer saw or a sharp marking knife. A limited number of tools will be available for rental.

Sharpening - with David Tilson

Date: November 1, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: In this class you’ll learn how to sharpen common woodworking tools using methods such as water- and oilstones, bench grinders, the Tormek and Work Sharp grinding systems, and more.  Topics include bevel angles, secondary bevels (micro bevels) and hollow grinds; polishing compounds, rust removal & prevention, and diamond stones.  Advance reservations required.  It is strongly recommended that students bring their own tools to sharpen, and learn on their own sharpening equipment if possible.  However, this also might be a great way to try out that shiny blue grinder you've been eyeing for months now!  Also, students must bring their own safety glasses.

Turning a Candle Holder - with Pete Carta

Date: November 8, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: This class builds on skills learned in our Introduction to the Lathe and / or Bowl Turning classes.  In this class, students will further develop their spindle turning skills and delve deeper into techniques for mounting, rough and finish turning, sanding and finishing.  We will also examine aspects of design and decorative details that can be applied to turning candle holders, goblets, and many other  items.  Reservations are required.  Students must bring their own eye protection, and dust masks are highly recommended.  All other materials will be provided.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Class Fee: $50, plus materials (approx. $15)


Finishing Basics - with Nancy Garcia

Date: November 15, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Take the fear out of finishing! This class teaches everything you need to know to strip off an old finish and then apply the perfect finish to just about any woodworking project. Topics include surface preparation and sanding; staining and dyeing; using sealers, oil-base and waterborne varnishes; and much more. Having completed this class, students will have a firm understanding of the basic types of wood finishes and how and why each is used.  Reservations are required, and all materials costs are included.

Router Dovetail Machines - with David Tilson

Date: November 22, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: If you’ve just gotten a new dovetail machine, or if you’re tired of running through your entire scrap pile making test cuts and still not getting a tight-fitting joint, this is the class for you. You’ll get step-by-step guidance through the entire process using either the Rockler or the Porter Cable 4200-series dovetail machine, from preparing the project materials to fine-tuning the final fit of the dovetail joint, all while learning how to cut dovetails safely and with your own tools!  Reservations are required. Students must bring their own safety glasses, hearing protection, router, and dovetail machine with bits (Rockler or Porter Cable 4200 series only, please). A very limited number of routers and dovetail machines are available for loan during the class, but only by prior arrangement.  All materials costs are included.

Make a Nested Set of Shaker Boxes - with David Tilson

Date: December 6 & 7, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm & 12pm - 3pm

Overview: Make a nested set of three shaker boxes and learn the essential techniques for making Shaker boxes, baskets and carriers, as well as Norwegian bent-wood boxes. In this 2-day class (12/6 and 12/7) you’ll learn about basic wood bending techniques, stock selection for bending wood, choosing the best wood stock for dimensional stability, and making jigs and forms for bending wood veneers. All tools and materials needed for the class are provided, and students will receive all necessary plans and patterns for making their own jigs and box making materials to use at home.  Advance reservations required, and this is a popular class, so it will fill up quickly!

Turning Wooden Pens - with Pete Carta

Date: December 13, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Learn the tricks to turning your own wooden pens from a master pen turner.  Students will 7mm pens from basic preparation right through finishing and assembly, with an emphasis on safety.  No prior woodturning experience is required!  Class fee includes standard materials and hardware kits for pens.  Students must bring their own safety glasses.   Advance reservations required, and this is a popular class, so it will fill up quickly!  The fee for this class includes a credit to cover the cost of most common pen kits and blanks.  If more expensive kits or blanks are desired, students are free to use them and pay only the difference.

Shop Safety - with Don Chafey

Date: December 20, 2014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Learn hands-on how to work safely in the woodshop.  In this class, geared to beginning and intermediate woodworkers, students will learn how to safely operate the table saw, BandSaw, drill press, router table, thickness planer, and miter saw.  Students will also learn the importance of dust collection and air purification.  Reservations are required, and students must bring their own eye and hearing protection.  All other materials will be provided.
