Classes and Workshops

Sharpening - with David Tilson

Date: July 52014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: In this class you’ll learn how to sharpen common woodworking tools using methods such as water- and oilstones, bench grinders, the Tormek and Work Sharp grinding systems, and more.  Topics include bevel angles, secondary bevels (micro bevels) and hollow grinds; polishing compounds, rust removal & prevention, and diamond stones.  Advance reservations required.  It is strongly recommended that students bring their own tools to sharpen, and learn on their own sharpening equipment if possible.  However, this also might be a great way to try out that shiny blue grinder you've been eyeing for months now!  Also, students must bring their own safety glasses.

Skill Level: Beginner

Cost: $50

Turning Bowls - with Pete Carta

Date: July 122014

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: This class builds on the skills and knowledge developed in our Introduction to the Lathe class.  Students will learn about faceplate turning, bowl chucks and accessories; scrapers and specialty hollowing tools; and will develop cross-grain faceplate turning skills while turning an open-form bowl.     Students must bring their own safety glasses, and may also bring their own sharp (ready-to-use) bowl gouge if desired.  The fee for this class includes a credit to cover the cost of typical materials.  If more expensive turning blanks are desired, students are free to use them and pay only the difference.  Reservations are required.
