Router Dovetail Machines, with David Tilson

Date: September 12, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: If you’ve just gotten a new dovetail machine, or if you’re tired of running through your entire scrap pile making test cuts and still not getting a tight-fitting joint, this is the class for you. You’ll get step-by-step guidance through the entire process using either the Rockler or the Porter Cable 4200-series dovetail machine, from preparing the project materials to fine-tuning the final fit of the dovetail joint, all while learning how to cut dovetails safely and with your own tools!  Advance reservations required.

Introduction to the Lathe, with Pete Carta

Date: September 19, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: This class is designed to introduce students to the tools and techniques of woodturning, and to provide a solid foundation in the essentials of woodturning which our other classes may build upon. Topics include lathes (features and safe operation), woodturning tools, simple sharpening, and turning between centers, with emphasis on safety and developing proper cutting technique.  Advance reservations required.

Router Basics, with Don Chafey

Date: September 26, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: If you want to expand your woodworking repertoire, the router is the tool to master.  This class covers everything from how to choose the best router for the job to cutting and milling operations with handheld and table-mounted routers.  Students will complete a project by pattern routing, making simple inlays, and forming edges.  Advance reservations required.

Sharpening, with David Tilson

Date: October 3, 2015

Time: 1pm - 4:30pm

Overview: In this class you’ll learn how to sharpen common woodworking tools using methods such as water- and oilstones, bench grinders, the Tormek and Work Sharp grinding systems, and more.  Topics include bevel angles, secondary bevels (microbevels) and hollow grinds; polishing compounds, rust removal & prevention, and diamond stones.  Advance reservations required.

Turning Bowls, with Pete Carta

Date: October 10, 2015

Time: 1pm - 4:30pm

Overview: This class builds on the skills and knowledge developed in our Introduction to the Lathe class.  Students will learn about faceplate turning, bowl chucks and accessories; scrapers and specialty hollowing tools; and will develop cross-grain faceplate turning skills while turning an open-form bowl.  Advance reservations required.

Hand Tools I: Planes & Scrapers, with David Tilson

Date: October 17, 2015

Time: 1pm - 4:30pm

Overview: Believe it or not, there really are a lot of woodworking tasks that can be done faster and better with hand tools!  Learn the time-honored skills of hand planing and scraping, which tools you’ll need, how to tune them up and get the most from each.  Advance reservations required.

Basic Shop Safety, with Don Chafey

Date: October 24, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Learn hands-on how to work safely in the woodshop.  In this class, geared to beginning and intermediate woodworkers, students will learn how to safely operate the tablesaw, bandsaw, drill press, router table, thickness planer, and miter saw.  Students will also learn the importance of dust collection and air purification.  Advance reservations required.

Hand Tools II: Dovetails, with David Tilson

Date: October 31 & November 1, 2015

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview: Learn the techniques for creating beautiful hand-cut joinery, including dovetails.  This two-session course builds on the skills learned in Hand Tool Basics, moving into the use of hand saws, chisel skills, and more!  Advance reservations required.

Shaker Boxes, with Jeanette Gonzales

Date: November 7 & 8, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm & 1pm - 4pm

Overview: Make a nested set of three shaker boxes and learn the essential techniques for making Shaker boxes, baskets and carriers, as well as Norwegian bent-wood boxes. In this 2-day class you’ll learn about basic wood bending techniques, stock selection for bending wood, choosing the best wood stock for dimensional stability, and making jigs and forms for bending wood veneers.  Advance reservations required.

Turning Wood Pens, with Pete Carta

Date: November 14, 2015

Time: 1pm - 5pm

Overview: Learn the tricks to turning your own wooden pens from a master pen turner.  Students will 7mm pens from basic preparation right through finishing and assembly, with an emphasis on safety.  No prior woodturning experience is required!

Finishing Basics, with David Tilson

Date: November 21, 2015

Time: 1pm - 4:30pm

Overview: Take the fear out of finishing! This class teaches everything you need to know to strip off an old finish and then apply the perfect finish to just about any woodworking project. Topics include surface preparation and sanding; staining and dyeing; using sealers, oil-base and waterborne varnishes; and much more. Having completed this class, students will have a firm understanding of the basic types of wood finishes and how and why each is used.  Advance reservations required.
