Router Basics - with David Tilson
Overview:
If you want to expand your woodworking repertoire, the router is the tool to master.  This class covers everything from how to choose the best router for the job to cutting and milling operations with handheld and table-mounted routers.  Students will complete a project by pattern routing, making simple inlays, and forming edges. Students should bring their own routers with ¼" collets.  A very limited number of routers are available for students who cannot bring their own router; reservations must be made in advance.  Students must also bring their own safety glasses and hearing protection.  Advance reservations are required..

Introduction to the Lathe- with Peter Carta
Overview:
This class is designed to introduce students to the tools and techniques of woodturning, and to provide a solid foundation in the essentials of woodturning which our other classes may build upon. Topics include lathes (features and safe operation), woodturning tools, simple sharpening, and turning between centers, with emphasis on safety and developing proper cutting technique.  Advance reservations required. Students must bring their own safety glasses and turning tools.  Tool rental will be available..

Sharpening - with David Tilson
Overview:
In this class you’ll learn how to sharpen common woodworking tools using methods such as water- and oilstones, bench grinders, the Tormek and Work Sharp grinding systems, and more.  Topics include bevel angles, secondary bevels (micro bevels) and hollow grinds; polishing compounds, rust removal & prevention, and diamond stones.  Advance reservations required.  It is strongly recommended that students bring their own tools to sharpen, and learn on their own sharpening equipment if possible.  However, this also might be a great way to try out that shiny blue grinder you've been eyeing for months now! Also, students must bring their own safety glasses.

Turning Wooden Pens - with Pete Carta
Overview:
Learn the tricks to turning your own wooden pens from a master pen turner.  Students will 7mm pens from basic preparation right through finishing and assembly, with an emphasis on safety.  No prior woodturning experience is required!  Students must bring their own safety glasses; all other materials will be provided.  Advance reservations are strongly recommended.

Finishing Basics - with Nancy Garcia
Overview:
Take the fear out of finishing! This class teaches everything you need to know to strip off an old finish and then apply the perfect finish to just about any woodworking project. Topics include surface preparation and sanding; staining and dyeing; using sealers, oil-base and waterborne varnishes; and much more. Having completed this class, students will have a firm understanding of the basic types of wood finishes and how and why each is used.  Advance reservations required.

Turning Bowls - with Pete Carta
Overview:
This class builds on the skills and knowledge developed in our Introduction to the Lathe class.  Students will learn about faceplate turning, bowl chucks and accessories; scrapers and specialty hollowing tools; and will develop cross-grain faceplate turning skills while turning an open-form bowl.  Advance reservations required.  Students must bring their own safety glasses, and may also bring their own sharp (ready-to-use) bowl gouge if desired.

Shop Safety - with Don Chafey
Overview:
Learn hands-on how to work safely in the woodshop.  In this class, geared to beginning and intermediate woodworkers, students will learn how to safely operate the tablesaw, bandsaw, drill press, router table, thickness planer, and miter saw.  Students will also learn the importance of dust collection and air purification.  Advance reservations required.  Students must bring their own eye and hearing protection.

Sharpening Turning Tools - with Pere Carta
Overview:
In this class you’ll learn how to sharpen common woodturning tools using methods such as Oneway’s Wolverine system,  Tormek’s bench grinder mount, the Work Sharp grinding system, and more.  Topics include bevel angles, tool geometry such as fingernail and swept grinds, whether or not to hone the edge, and more.  It is strongly recommended that students bring their own tools to sharpen, and learn on their own sharpening equipment if possible.  However, this also might be a great way to try out a different grinding system!  Also, students must bring their own safety glasses.  Advance reservations are strongly recommended.

Hand Tools I: Planes & Scrapers - with David Tilson
Overview:
Believe it or not, there really are a lot of woodworking tasks that can be done faster and better with hand tools!  Learn the ancient arts of hand planing and scraping, which tools you’ll need, how to tune them up and get the most from each.    Advance reservations are strongly recommended.  Students may wish to bring their own hand plane, block plane, card scraper, “mill smooth” file, and burnisher.
