Torrance Woodworking Classes and Workshops

Turning Lidded Boxes with Steve Abshear

Date: February 13, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview:  In this class you will learn how to make a turned box with a fitted lid from dry hardwood.  You will also learn how to make and use a jamb chuck to finish the top and bottom of the turned box.  The "Introduction to Wood Turning" class is recommended as a prerequisite.

Eye protection is a must so bring your safety glasses or face shield.

Tools you will need: 3/8" spindle gouge, 1/2" round nose scraper, a parting tool and a roughing gouge (if you have one).  A bedan tool would also be helpful (if you have one).  You may also bring any other tools that you think might be appropriate.

Introduction to Pen Turning with Robert Streeter

Date: February 20, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview:  This class is designed for the student who wants to learn how to turn a wooden pen on the lathe.  Students will be taken step by step through the process of turning a wooden pen on the lathe; from tool selection, blank preparation, finishing options, and assembly.  Students will leave with a completed pen.  Students are required to provide their own safety glasses & dust mask.  A safety face shield is also recommended.

Intermediate Carving  with Larry Bates

Date: March 5, & 12, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview:  Larry will teach additional carving techniques while students carve the Indian Head from the 1938 Indian Head Nickel in this 2 day class.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Introduction to Bowl Turning with Steve Abshear

Date: March 19, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview: This is the class for a student with some spindle-turning experience that is looking to branch out into other types of turning.  The "Introduction to Wood Turning" class is recommended as a prerequisite.  The class will focus on techniques and tools used in turning a simple bowl.  The student will turn their own bowl.  All materials are included.  Students are required to provide their own safety glasses & dust mask.  A safety face shield is also recommended.

Sharpening Chisels & Hand Planes

Date: March 26, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview: Tool sharpening is one of those often overlooked skills  that plays a critical role in the quality of the product you produce and the safe manner in which you produce it. This class will show you the basics in sharpening plane knives and Chisels. He student will learn to sharpen using sharpening stones as well as The Tormek  sharpening system. The student is encouraged to bring their own chisels and plane blades to work with. Students are required to provide their own safety wear.

Finishing Basics - Roger Davis

Date: April 2, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview: Learn the basics of finishing featuring Zar and General Finishes products from surface preparation through sanding; Oil based or Water based, what your choices are.  Also, Gel Stains, Dye Stains, Milk Paint and others to get the desired look of your project.

Introduction to Wood Turning - Steve Abshear

Date: April 9, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview: This is the class for the first time turner or anyone with limited experience in turning.  The student will be introduced to the lathe and many of the common tools used in wood turning, including the proper use of said tools.  The student will learn a variety of techniques of turning between centers, including sharpening tools.  There will be a strong emphasis on safety.  Students are required to provide their own safety glasses and dust mask.  A safety face shield is also recommended.

Introduction to V-Carve - John Topel

Date: April 16, 2016

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Overview: Explore the exciting possibilities of woodworking with the use of a computerized CNC machine.  The class is structured around the Rockler/Next Wave Shark and Piranha.  Each student is required to bring their own laptop computer with the V-Carve software loaded.  Free demonstration versions can be downloaded through the Vectric.com website.  Students are required to provide their own safety glasses and hearing protection.  This class teaches you how to manipulate the software.  There may or may not be time to actually run the CNC, depending on the number of students in the class.  This will be handled at the discretion of the instructor.

Skill Level: Beginner

Class Fee: $60
