Classes and Workshops

Finishing-Hands On - with Rich Johnson

Date: October 19, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: An incredible opportunity to learn about the theory of finishing from one of the best! Our instructor will teach you about the different types of finish available to the woodworker and when to use them. You will learn about natural and man-made finishes, indoor and outdoor finishes, and the stains and dyes used to color your projects. You will get to use the knowledge learned in the class to take an average finish and turn it into a stunning surface! You will be amazed at the results you will be able to achieve on your next finishing project.

Turning 101 - with Bruce Perry

Date: October 25, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: This class, aimed at beginners, teaches survival, safety and the basic skills of spindle work and faceplate turning to create a small bowl. Sharpening methods are also demonstrated as well as discussions on wood structure, wood selection and tool choices. This is a skills class, not a “project” class; the take-away is knowledge, not finished woodturnings. Your instructor will be Bruce Perry. All wood and tools supplied by the instructor.

Turning Ornaments - with Bruce Perry

Date: October 26, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: Shape a hollow lightweight ball to create an elegant ice cycle shape, along with a top hanger finial. Methods for designing and developing thin spindle turnings are the primary focus. Step by step demonstration and practice make these methods simple. As always sharpening is included. All wood and tools supplied by the instructor. You may want to bring your own tools for a tune up, and use them if they apply.

Small Wood Boxes - Rich Gady

Date: November 1, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: In this class you will learn the processes for constructing a beautiful lidded box. You will also learn techniques for making different corner joints, such as mitered and splined, and how to achieve a well-fitted lid. To accomplish this, the table saw (with miter & spline sleds), drum, belt, & orbital sanders, router, band saw and drill press will be used. Decorative touches with veneers will be demonstrated. The instructor, Rich Gady, master cabinetmaker, will demonstrate these processes and help you start making beautiful boxes.

Router Workshop - Rich Johnson

Overview: All-Day Router Intensive - A fantastic opportunity to learn about the router and its use in woodworking.  This class will cover everything about the machine and how to choose the best router for any size project.  The class will also cover bit selection, techniques and basic cuts, template use, inlays, joinery, jigs and plenty of tricks! Learn from router enthusiast Rich Johnson about this incredibly versatile power tool. Once you see all the things a router can do and how to use it, you won’t hesitate to use routers in all of your projects.

Take Your Turning To The Next Level - Michael Roper

Date: November 8, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: Make a turning project of your own choice with an award winning wood artist Michael Roper (just call him Roper) who will help you take your woodturning to the next level. This is an open intermediate class designed to help beginner woodturners take the next step in perfecting their technique. We will discuss proper tool bevel angles as well as sharpening techniques, stance and safety at the lathe while guiding you through the project you want to do. Please bring your tools and wood for your project.

Scroll Saw - Rich Gady

Date: November 9, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: Learn how to use the scroll saw to make your next project or the perfect gift! An exceptional opportunity to learn from scroll saw artist, Rich Gady. You will learn how to set up your saw, prepare your stock, and make accurate cuts. Learn delicate piercing, stack laminations, and more. Selecting materials and choosing saw blades for the best possible cut will be covered. When you leave the class, you will have all the knowledge and confidence you need to use your scroll saw effectively in your shop.

Woodworking 101 - Table - Tracy Gray

Date: November 15, 2014

Time: 9am - 1pm

Overview: Class is 11/15 & 11/16. Learn the basics for all your future woodworking projects. On the first day, you will learn to safely use the jointer, planer, table saw, miter saw, and router. You will learn at least one method of joinery and will leave the next day with a beautiful small side table. Completion of this course will prepare you to move on to using the shop for more advanced projects. A $55 materials fee  covers wood, screws, equipment, glue, etc.

Turning Hollow Forms - Bruce Perry

Date: November 23, 2014

Time: 9am - 4pm

Overview: Shape a hollow form and create an elegant turned vase. Step by step demonstration and practice will be the order of the day. Students will learn how to rough shape between centers, methods to cut a clean shape, how to mount the vessel in a chuck, how to hollow, and how to jamb the piece to finish the bottom. Students will learn about sources and selection of wood, wood grain, and how they relate to your design and project success.
