Basic Finishing with Kris McCartan

Date:  May 1, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  You’ve spent weeks building your project and now you’re scratching your head trying to figure out how to finish it.  Learn about different types of finishes available and when to use them.  From natural and man-made finishes, indoor and outdoor finishes and the stains and dyes used to color your project.  Class will cover finishing preparation, stain types, top coats and wrap up with waxes and polishes.

Scroll Saw Basics with Vince Fricke

Date:  May 8, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  Learn the Basics of using the Scroll Saw in this class.  Vince will cover the set-up, blade selection, material selection, and simple techniques to get you on your way to scroll saw perfection.  You will also get to make a small project to take with you at the completion of the course.

Lathe Tool Fundamentals with Chuck Myers

Date:  May 15, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  Successful turning begins with the tools used.  Many turning tasks can be accomplished with a variety of tools, but once a tool has been selected for a particular task, its configuration, sharpness, and presentation to the wood can make a huge difference in the results achieved.  In this class you'll learn about a wide range of the more commonly used lathe tools, how different grinds can be used to make them more appropriate for particular applications, how to keep them sharp, and how to present them to the work for optimal results.  Due to the hands-on nature of the class and the number of available lathes, class size is limited to three.  Participants are encouraged to bring a few of their own tools to tune and use during the class.

Bandsaw / Table Saw Set-up with Kris McCartan

Date:  May 22, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  You just bought a new Bandsaw or Table saw.  Now what?  In this class Kris will go through setting up the Bandsaw and Table saw so you can get the best performance our of your equipment.  Kris will also cover some basic cutting techniques that you can take with you.

Pen Turning with Chuck Myers

Date:  June 5, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  Hand crafted pens make practical and useful gifts, and with a little salesmanship they can even help to offset the cost of a very enjoyable hobby. But despite the obvious benefits of taking on pen turning projects, many beginning turners are reluctant to give them a try. The process just seems too daunting. If this sounds a little like you , this class will provide all you'll need to  jumpstart your pen making . Not only does this cover tool use and process, it provides useful tricks and techniques gleaned from years of pen turning experience, supervised hands on practice, and a completed pen to take home at the end of the day. Class size is limited to three due to lathe availability, so reserve you slot early if you want top attend.

Making a Bandsaw Box with Kris McCartan

Date:  June 12, 2016

Time:  11am - 4pm

Overview:  Students will learn how to make a one of a kind gift box, cut out with a standard band saw.  The class takes you through all of the steps from design and layout through cutting and sanding using a band saw and spindle sander to finishing and flocking.  Each student will work on a box of their own.  Class includes all materials.

Skill Level:  Beginner - Intermediate

Bowl Turning with Chuck Myers

Date:  June 19, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  Wooden bowls are both beautiful and functional.  Every bowl carries with it the unique characteristics of the timber from which it was made and the unique taste and craftsmanship of its creator.  Many beginning turners have difficulty getting started with bowl making because the whole process seems rather daunting, but that is easily remedied.  The instruction and demonstration of proper technique, tool configuration, and sharpening provided in this class, coupled with supervised practice with a real project, will serve to shorten the learning curve significantly.  Due to the hands-on nature of the class and the number of available lathes, class size is limited to three. Participants are encouraged to bring any appropriate tools they may
have to tune and use during the class.

CNC Basics with Joe O'Connor

Date:  June 26, 2016

Time:  12pm - 3pm

Overview:  Explore the exciting possibilities of woodworking with the use of a computerized CNC machine.  The class is structured around the Rockler/Next Wave Shark.  Each student is required to bring their own laptop computer with the V-Carve software loaded.  Free demonstration versions can be downloaded through the Rockler website.  All other materials are included.

Skill Level:  Beginner

Class Fee:  $35
