As you can see from the photo, the product description is pretty accurate: brown and creamy yellow with an interesting grain pattern. These items are from two different pieces purchased from Rockler. The first (the bottle stopper) was a little more dense and harder (you can see the grain is tighter). The second was just that little bit softer that made it easy to work with, but still plenty hard and durable. These are both sanded to 600 grit and then finished with tung oil, and 3 coats of clear shellac.

Perhaps I was lucky, but the cross fit perfectly in my pen. I would give it 5 stars except I think it would be better if the cross was slightly larger and the walnut body was slightly darker, making more of a contrast between it and the cross. That said, it made a very nice pen and nice gift I used a gel cartridge in place of the ballpoint for a smoother writing pen.
