Would this work to get chips/dust from a lathe if it were attached to the front of a lathe stand?
Robert C
on Dec 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes if you have enough air flow from your vacuum and position it correctly. The bristles might be something that could interfere. You might do better by modifying a vacuum head to fit on the lathe.

John M

The description of older Rockler dovetail jigs with 4-screw side stops, isn't enough information for me to know if mine is or not. Mine has two one piece plastic stops, one on each end of the jig. Each plastic stop has two screws, one at the top by the top bar clamp and one on the side my the side bar clamp. Is this the new or old Rockler jig?

This really sucks!
That is that this attachment sucks up all of the chips and dust generated while using my Rockler Dovetail Jig. Cleaning up after cutting dovetails literally takes no time at all. How boring is that?! The extra time can be spent sanding down the beautiful dovetails.

Very simple to install, and what a difference. No chips in the face, no chips to clean up. All the chips and sawdust go into the dust vac system hopper. Wish this had been available years earlier. This is one of the best ideas for woodworking since the router was invented. Great product.

This dust collector catches 98% of...
This dust collector catches 98% of all the chips and used with a vacuum modified router 99.9% of all the saw dust. It was a real pleasure not to be angle deep in saw dust. The collector does add a little difficulty in inserting the "tail" board and obscures the router bit, but the gain is well worth it. It is really a must if decided to buy the jig.

I "hate" to vacuum wood chips...
I "hate" to vacuum wood chips and sawdust from my shop floor after making dovetail cuts, so I purchased your dovetail jig dust collector, (with some skepticism)! After a little practice and setup cuts, my results were great. Considering the complexity of the jig and how it sprays chips in all directions, putting a stop to that mess was priority 1 for me. Your jig dust collector solved all of my problems, I love it!

I highly recommend this dovetail jig...
I highly recommend this dovetail jig attachment. While it makes it slightly more tricky to get the workpiece inserted and adjusted upward on the jig, especially when using some backer board, this inconvenience is far offset by the decrease in mess and dust in the air. I would estimate 80-90% of the chips and dust is collected. Instead of a huge spread of chips and dust across my shop, I have a very small pile right at my feet. I find this pile is primarily from the first two fingers being routed. The collection gets better from right to left on the jig. The sliding mechanism of the front sweep makes it possible to stil see your bit and workpiece to adjust the height, and then slide it up to capture dust and debris. It does not impede the router or the bit, and does not negatively affect the usability of the dovetail jig. As noted above, it just takes some more patience getting your workpiece in place properly. You do have to *really* back off, or even remove, the left side of the vacuum attachment to readjust the stop guide. When clamped to a workpiece it is very secure and I haven't had any slippage.

WInning the war on wood dust
Router sawdust is more of a wood powder that has a high airborn quality like sanding and really really makes the bride irritable. This collector works quite well at doing the deed..
Was it worth $50 bucks? That depends on ones expectations..
For me it has a few quirks in use but the wood powder is now in the shop vac,,,I'm happy with it.

Good collector with one caveat
It is an effective collector and I like it. It is rather cumbersome attaching it while keeping the knob, spring, offset dowel and handle all together while then turning the screw rod in.
This is a 2016 update to other reviewers from older reviews who had the same situation. My current model has the same L-shape stop bracket screw problem which is inaccessible behind the mounted collector. I didn't want to have to go through the process of removing the collector to set things up, then the awkward installing the collector.
I too decided to bore holes through the collector to get a screwdriver to adjust the L-bracket vertical screw. That screw is in a horizontal adjustable stop so the hole I drilled had to be sized to allow for that adjustment.

Great at reducing dust; a pain to adjust
It significantly reduces the amount of dust created during dovetailing. However, the collector does block the adjusting screws. Since I make a variety of drawer sizes, I drilled a hole through from the front at each of the screws and widened the back holes. This allows me to keep the dust collector in place and access the screws. I've had the same problem with other users regarding the track that the air dam rides in coming loose.

Works well at keeping the area clean but is a problem when installed and trying to set up the jig...need to remove in order to mark the depth of cut when doing through dovetails...I am going to slot the dust collector so I can remove it without have to totally unscrew the clamp.

I was given the Rockler Dovetail...
I was given the Rockler Dovetail Jig for Father's day, and was delighted to see the dust collector go on sale the very next day. I hate cleaning up wood chips as much as anyone, so I considered it a "must have" at any cost. After using it a few times, I must say that it does a great job. Hooked up to my Ridgid shop vac (the big one) it pulled in virtually everything that the router bit threw at it. My only dislike is the manner in which it is mounted. Sandwiched between the jig and the front stock clamp, the dust collector hides the lower screw on the adjustment bar which must be loosened each time you center the stock on the template. The first few times I made this adjustment, I removed the dust collector and clamp completely. This was cumbersome, so I decided to make the task easier. I cut a slot from the mounting bolt hole to the lower edge of the dust collector. With this modification I only have to loosen the mounting bolts, not fully remove them. The dust collector will lift up and out once I have loosened the bolts far enough to make clearance for the dust port. This modification doesn't seem to have harmed or weakened the unit in any way, but I'm certain it has eliminated my return options, should I find any other issue with the dust collector. Oh well, it was only $20 on sale. I would hope the good people at Rockler take note of my idea, and perhaps give it a try. Maybe, if they find no issue with the slots, they could modify their design and make their product that much easier to use.

The unit should have springs on...
The unit should have springs on each end that would collapse when tightened. This could allow the unit to be upright instead of in on the bottom. This would allow much easier loading of the bottom board. I also use backer boards and because of the non slip surface in the unit, it is hard to get them in the best position. Also I would like the unit to be at least 1-2 inch lower. The first time I used it my router bit took a 32nd of an inch off the top edge. I know my bit was too low but there should be more tolerance than that. I don't think that would effect the ability to get most of the dust and chips.

Recommend with Reservations
I purchased as part of the complete dovetail jig. Please keep in mind this is my first attempt at dovetail joinery. That said, in order to set up the jig, there is a stop that needs to be adjusted with three screws, one of which is covered by the dust collector. In order to make the adjustment correctly, the dust collector must be removed by unscrewing two rather long bolts. If you are planning on doing a large number of dovetail joints of the same size, the dust collector works well (better with 1/2” stock than with 3/4” stock by a considerable margin). If you are only doing one set of cuts, I’d recommend leaving it off. Had I then what I know now, I would still recommend buying this item.

Great dust collector minor issue
The dust collection side of it works amazing, the only draw back is that the clamping force has to transfer through the collector which does effect the clamping effect

Works good but
This works good but I found it gets in the way mainly because I'm an amateur dove tail maker and have to keep adjusting the jig. Would probably work great for someone who knows what they are doing.

I purchased the Rockler Dust Collector...
I purchased the Rockler Dust Collector packaged with the Dovetail Jig, and it does substantially help keep the mess down. I’m assuming it was engineered after the jig itself as an add-on because it does really make set-up substantially more complicated. As others have noted, it gets in the way of adjusting the front screw of the “L” shaped adjustable stops, and as it is you have to unscrew and remove the Clamp Bar to be able to set up your project. I’m wondering if drilling a small slot in the back plastic wall at the level of the front set screws would interfere with the clamping function. I will try fix of using a hex head 10-24 screw with a thin open end wrench first though that’s just one more tool to get out.

As intended, the dust collector did...
As intended, the dust collector did it's job very well, significantly reducing the dust and clean-up when routng dovetails on my Rockler Docetail Jig. I did have two problems, one was annoying, the other quite troublesome. The first problem was the sliding plastic air dam - the inside track popped out the very first time I tightened the front channel - I will re-glue and try again on my next project. The second problem was that once the collector is in place, as others have noted, you can not access the front screw on the stop guides without backing off or and almost removing the collector. My first solution was a 90 degree screwdriver, which allowed me to keep the collector installed, but still had to back off quite a bit to reach. My second solution was to replace the phillips head screw with a hex head 10-24 screw so I can use a thin open end wrench to make the adjustments.

The only problem I had was...
The only problem I had was that my jig is an older version and has the clamp handle placed in the center of the axel, which puts the knuckels in the middle of the collector, so after a fiew joints I got wise and drilled and tapped the axel so that it is as the new jigs are shipped. I only needed to do the front axel, as the top handle is fine in the center of the jig.

The collector helps tremendously with flying dust. I can actually see what i am doing. However, it could of been made stronger with better (more even)clamping pressure. The wood worker appreciates quality. It also is really in the way when clamping the wood in the jig. Would also like to see the dust port coming out the end instead of right in the front where i am standing. It does help 100% with the mess (which is what it was designed to do) but interferes with everything else.

I have to agree with the...
I have to agree with the reviewers before me, who had given a not so good review to this product on the base of its poor design. Do not get me wrong, I love the idea of not having to deal with the chips and sawdust in my shop, but you are basically trading off the time you save cleaning up after the mess for the time you waste with the installation of the dust collector. Because you have to install it again and again every time you switch your project. Basically, the body of the collector gets in the way when you need to adjust the L-shaped stops. As somebody mentioned, I thought about routing a small slot in the body of the dust collector to be able to pass the screwdriver, but then again, while the L-shaped stops move horizontally, the brush part of the dust collector moves vertically, so I do not know if this would really work. Besides the fact that you are adding holes to a place where you want to create some aspiration from the vacuum and that the slots will degrade the already weak construction of the collector itself. I appreciate the idea provided by some reviewers of using hexagonal-shaped screws so that you can use a wrench that you can introduce laterally to the adjusting screws rather than a screwdriver, which you need to use from the front. I tried to use a right angle screwdriver, but, first, you have to almost remove completely the dust collector anyway, and it makes the process difficult and you might end up damaging the screw. In a device where you will having to adjust, and release these screws in the L-Shaped stops every time you do a setup it would be not a good idea to damage them but using a tool which is the one not better designed for the job. In summary, the device is excellent for removing the dust, it is poorly designed, and its construction would have benefited from sturdier materials. I am disappointed. have to disagree with all the customers that gave 4 and 5 star ratings on this item.

Great idea and functionality. However, unless it is re-designed to be either easy to remove, or easier to work around to set up the jig, I probably won't be using it much.

Dust Collector
This thing is always in the way especially the brush at the top . With the brush on you can not see the pencil mark on the wood to adjust the router bit I used it today and removed the dust collector and every thing went well more shavings, but worked much easier.

poor design
The jig is great but if the dust collector is installed you can't get to the screws to adjust the jig stops. Unless you are only going to set the stops for one size and leave it, the dust collector is more trouble than it's worth.

I gave this product a poor rating because although I fundamentally it does what it was built to do, it's a very poor design. I'm more than a little amazed ou have to uninstall it every time you use it. Unless of course you plan to use wood that never changes from one project to another. If your plan is to cut dovetails on stock exactly the same size every time, then you're good. But if like me, you plan to do different things, plan also on uninstalling the unit from the jig every time you have to do a new set up. have to say, if given the choice to do it all over again, I would not have bought the package with the dust collector included, as I feel the jig itself works very well. But I'm betting this dust collector will sit on a shelf in my shop for the remainder of its' life, and I'll have to resign myself to the fact that I threw put good money after bad. /p>
