I just bought this jig. Tested several times making multiple adjustments and still can't get the 1/2 blinds to fit. Pins too large/ slot too small. I have dropped the bit as well as raised the bit. Nothing seems to work. I'm using the bushing the kit came with as well as the 1/2" 14 degree bit it came with. Very frustrated. How do I fix?
Autumnchaos13
on Feb 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: if bushing isn't centered on bit there will be a small amount of "lash". In other words, the bit will be spinning in an offset circle from the bushing (think oblong) enough to cause looseness.

Just a guess, but you may be making to large an adjustment. Exaggerated example: If you have a gap of 1/8" you only need a 1/16" adjustment. Obviously this is an extreme example but you get the idea. Hope this helps.

BEST ANSWER: I had the same problem. You are using the wrong router bit for the the 1/2 blind dovetails. Use only the shorter of the dovetail bits (1/2"x 14 degrees). On most routers you can put the bit in through the bushing with the plate already on the router... It might be tricky to find the right height adjustment but usually somewhere about half way you will be able to reach the wrench or both in to tighten the bit into the collet

If you are cutting half blind dovetails, the 9/16" depth of cut should clear the bushing. If you are cutting through dovetails, you will need to shim the template by 1/4" in addition to the thickness of your stock. I just used a board that was 3/4" thick for my 1/2" thick box sides. This should get the bit clear of the bushing. Hope you have already solved your problem but, if not, I hope this helps.

Mine actually came with an 8mm collet (and if your's didn't, then you can easily buy one on eBay) so I am still wondering if the bushing actually fits or not. The RT0700 says it supports standard guide bushings so I am assuming the jig should work. Am I right?

BEST ANSWER: all routers that are Plunge and have a base (bit opening of 1 and 1/4 ") that will allow for the 7/16 guide bushing works. The kit includes a reducer that fits the 1/2 collet.
For first timers, the instructions aren't the greatest, so plan of setting aside several "test: boards.

This comment refers to the 5/16" reducer supplied by Rockler with this jig which you slide over the bit shank to fit into a 1/2" chuck, which I'll call a sleeve . Has anyone else ever had that sleeve get jammed into the tapered bottom of their router? I have been unable to remove the sleeve or the collet. The collet seems to have been jammed against the upper walls of the chamber because of the outward pressure of the sleeve. If you know anything about this, or know anyone who has had this problem, please let me know.? OR if anyone has a suggestion about how to free it up, I'd really appreciate it. I'm routerless!!!

I use a Makita RP2301FC router. I have set up the jig as explained for the through dovetails. When I cut the tail boards, the bit does not seem to be long enough and it does not properly cut the edge of the board; it leaves a slightly rounded edge instead of a consistently straight edge. I did not expect to trim the joint with a chisel to make if fit the pin board. The board is 3/4" thick stock. What might I be doing wrong?

BEST ANSWER: Sorry, I purchased my dovetail jig a year ago and have only used it on 5/8 stock. I have no experience with 3/4 stock. I can tell you that even with the 5/8 stock, there was a ton of scraps and trial and error ( mostly error) until I got it right. I can only suggest extending the bit a little out of the chuck in your router.

What about when the sides and front are different thickness?
John F
on Oct 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It should be fine. In general, you set the different jig limits based on the size of the stock.
For half-blind, you're setting the limit of the router movement based on the thickness of the side. The bit depth just needs to be less than the front thickness, and altered to adjust proper fit when assembled. Although, with this kit, you're limited on the bit's travel because of the bushing. So there's a minimum thickness for half-blind dovetails.
For through dovetails, you use two different bits and set the various cuts based on the different thickness of material. So when you cut the front, you use the side as the depth guide. When you cut the side, you use the front as the depth guide.
As always, just use some scraps of the same material (or at least the same thickness) to get your setup dialed in, and then proceed to start your project.

You should be able to do each board individually, paying close attention to make sure your cuts match after gluing each board together...
On a board this wide, few of the dovetail jigs will do you much good. There is a Keller jig for cutting through dovetails which would allow you to shift the jig when you reach the end and thereby cut dovetails of unlimited length. Another choice, which is the one I prefer, would be to use this as an excuse to learn to cut them by hand. They seem daunting, but they get easier with some practice. You will be happier with the results though.
You cannot use this jig with a 28" board if your cuts are on the 28" side. Jig handles 12" boards. If you trust yourself to cut and join exactly then maybe you can do separate pieces and join them ... I would not do it ... I waste enough wood as is.

I own several brands of dovetail jigs. Purchased this one because of the dust collection. Cannot make the 1/2 blind dovetails fit. The pins simply don't fit in the tails. Have set up the jig several times and cut numerous test boards with all different hgt adjustments from the recommended 9/16" down to 17/32" in .005" increments with absolutely the same result. The others work fine and I have set them up countless times with no issues. The good news is that the dust collection works great, the bad news is the jig is unusable as is. Any ideas?

Rockler Dovetail Jig
Have made several different pieces of furniture for our grandkids, bar cabinets and more. This jig works well. Need to pay attention so you don't get two left or two right sides. Can't blame that on the jig. Easy to use, good instructions.

Great jig, directions not so much.
This jig is awesome, and coupled with the optional distinctive templates you can get some really cool looking dovetails that look almost hand cut. My only complaint is that the directions could have been better and Rockler put out promo videos but no directional videos. That being said, after a few trial runs you can get the swing of it pretty quick.

I'd heard that there's a learning curve to doing dovetails with a jig. But, thanks to the excellent instruction sheet that came with my Rockler jig, it was relatively easy! I'm super pleased - it was an excellent investment!

Great results. Wasn't sure how this 1/2 in. Baltic Birch ply would behave but it came out great.

Rockler Dovetail Kit
It for me is quite fine and comes with the templates and bits needed to utilize this kit into making decent dovetails for drawers or joining cabinet sides to make not only a sturdy cabinet or drawers but interesting contrasts of woods into the finished product. Maybe later I will take the time to submit a photo nut now I am too busy building products. I believe that having the right tools at your disposal provides in making the the difference between an artist and a wood butcher. Anyway I am pleased and thought the pricing reasonable. Have fun with whatever project you are into....

Addendum
An addendum to my Dec 10, 2015 of this product. I did not mention this in my review because I thought it was operator error. On the boxes mentioned in the prior review
the tops and bottoms of the boards did not line up exactly. I did call Rockler but the technician did not have any idea what could be wrong. A friend of mine also said he had the same problem and gave up on the jig. I don't know what brand he has but this got me thinking and making test boards. Finally, in a fit of desperation, I read the instructions for maybe the tenth time. Eureka! When cutting through dovetails, the inside of the pin boards should be facing the operator! Wow! A revelation! Anyway, I tried again and everything lined up perfectly. I only admit my error in the hope of saving another woodworker some work.
Let's go make some sawdust!

WOW!!! It really works!
I purchased my jig back in April, along with the dust collection system, because they were on sale. At the time I had no project that called for dovetails so I just played with it and set it aside for whenever...Whenever arrived last week when I was asked by a friend to make a box for her son for Christmas. The box that she had seen was not dovetailed but this one will be. Anyway, after reading and rereading and rerereading the instructions I followed the instructions (Shocking!) and, using test boards, was able to cut through dovetails very quickly. Feeling emboldened, I then proceeded to cut the tails on the front and back of two boxes. Having cut the tails on box number one I pulled out another test panel to cut the pins. After the initial cut and then gradually adjusting the template, I had the pins cut with a really nice fit. I then did the first box and dashed into the house to show my wife. After a minimum of back patting I went back to my shop and did the second box for my friend. I got a slightly tighter fit this time and it, too, looks great. So, on my first attempt at dovetails ever, I have two great looking boxes. I know....They still don't have lids or bottoms but they really look great.
What I am trying to say is that this is a great product and, if you read and follow the instructions, you can add another fun dimension to your woodworking. Also, the dust collector picked up all, repeat, all of the dust!
Thank you, Rockler. I am a happy woodworker.

Spent several months trying to cut dovetails by hand and even made my own jigs for through and half-blind dovetails with only moderate success. This jig makes through dovetails very simple. Some experimenting required with half blind but serviceable and more accurate than my hand cut.

I've had other dovetail jigs that I didn't get the hang of it. But this one I did and I like it very much.

lower cam clamp
Some are saying the lower cam clamp is in the way, turn it around so it clamps on the down stroke this is easy to do by removing the clamp bar bolt and simply swithching the lever to the left, have a sawdusty day.

I've used three DT jigs -...
I've used three DT jigs - the old blue Rockler, a Porter Cable and this. By far this is the best I have used. The old blue Rockler jig was at best fiddely. Some of the adjustment were almost impossible to make without taking the jig apart. With the Porter Cable it is very difficult to make drawer sides out of baltic birch. There is a ton of tearout and you can't use material less than 1/2". The new Rockler jig is easy to set up and use. I really like the way you can back rout a scoring line before you plunge in. The helps tame tearout. I would highly recommend this jig.

You would be hard pressed to find a better jig for the money. If you cut dovetails for a living it might not be as robust as others I've used, but it's very well built for what it is. Set-up was fantastic. I was also very impressed with the dust collector. I surprisingly get almost no dust when everything is properly in place.I have used $500 jigs that work no better than this.

I read a lot of reviews before...
I read a lot of reviews before I bought my 23777 dove tail jig w/ dust collector! The directions were very good and it was easy to set up. I started with the half blind and made six drawers the first night with no problems ! The dust collector can be a pain , but works great. Fix for this is to use an offset screw driver to adjust . The handle on right side works great if you screw it in from the back side of the jig! As far as the sleeve for the 8 mm bits getting stuck in the collet or router, I did find one for my porter cable 690 router that has a lip on the end so it will not get stuck white side. I also have an older blue dovetail jig by rockler , this one is much easier to set up and a lot faster!! I have been doing wood working for the past 20 years and this was a good addition to my shop.My only gripe is that I should have waited for a while , as it went on sale for $10.00 less today .I do own a lot of Rockler tools and they do work good and there shipping is fast. I do recommend this jig.

I had an old dovetail from...
I had an old dovetail from a discount store, tried it and it worked ok, but was not reliable. I needed to make eleven drawers for a project I was making. I wanted them to look nice. I looked around for easily set-up jugs that could give me contimued repeatibility. I found it in this jig from Rockler. I had looked at the big jigs from Porter Cable and Leigh and realized for 99 percent of items dovetailed, there is not much that is over 20 inches that I am going to do. I have never made a drawer over 12 inches deep. I realized, this was the one jig for me. I also ordered it with the dust collector and the stand. Set up is rather easy without problems. The only drawback that I have found, is, With the dust collector attached, adjustments for the off-set guide stops can not be adjusted. You have to take off the complete front hold down to access the screws. This can be changed to put wing nuts on the rear of the screws if you can get the heads of the bolts not to spin. Once you get them set, you don't have to adjust them anymore for that size stock, but it does take an extra step. But all in all, I have found the jig exactly to do what I ask of it and it is very steady and does not wobble. Thank you Rockler, also for not getting dust and wood chips stuck in my flannel shirts. The dust collection works like a dream.

I have been cutting dovetails for...
I have been cutting dovetails for many years with a Craftsman Pro Jig and was never really satisfied with the results. For a year or so I have been reading the reviews on the Rockler Jig and was intreged with the dust collection attachment. I finally took the plunge and bought the jig with the dust collector andalso the stand. Right out of the box the first half blind cuts were perfect! The instructions were clear and easy to setup. I would tell anyone - It is a great product!

This is my first dovetail jig...
This is my first dovetail jig and I must say I'm impressed. The instructions are very well-written and easy to follow. Setup was quick and easy. I was able to cut perfect fitting dovetails on my first piece of scrap. I have used the jig for both half-blind and through dovetails with excellent results. The dust collector is also very effective.

The instructions were very helpful and the troubleshooting guide is spot on. I made perfect dovetails afer only using a few scrap pieces. Nice work Rockler!

I am only 17 years old...
I am only 17 years old and I got it right on the 1st time. I love this jig for all the dovetail joints. The only problem I got is keeping the bit in the same spot without moving while routing. But I learned. I got a g bit 1/2 7 degree 1/4 inch shank and that problem was solved, instead of the 8mm bit sliding up and down while routing making an uneven cut. But other than the bits moving I will recommend for everyone to use this product. Like I said I'm only 17 and it is that easy.

I have owned a smaller half...
I have owned a smaller half blind dovetail jig for a long time. It is hard to adjust and a little flimsy. The Rockler jig is definitely a big step up. I am thrilled with the new jig. As a note to the Bosch router people, Bosch router are odd ducks. Porter Cable created the standard for router bushings years ago. Bosch's German roots caused it to be produced with a European style bushing. When the dual base router kits came out a bunch of years ago, Bosch and Makita were highly rated. I think Bosch edged Makita out as first pick. Every review I read warned potential Bosch buyers that the standard PC bushing did not work in the Bosch. Using the Bosch router in many jigs would require the buyer purchase a relatively pricey Bosch only router bushing set. I think the dovetail jig loses about a half star to grumpy Bosch users. Perhaps, Rockler should warn purchasers of the incompatibility with Bosch routers. Perhaps Bosch owner should know their tools well enough to anticipate the added cost. Bosch is a great manufacturer, the added cost is just the cost of own a router you love.Editor's note: The Bosch 1617 router can easily be used with this jig by removing the sub base from the router base and replacing with the following: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=25412

Don't even bother looking for a better dovetailing jig near this price. It works better than it should for the money. I got it in the mail, ran to the shop and read the instructions as I cut a through dovetail and then a half blind. Minor adjustments and I was pleasantly surprised. This jig is no toy. It works.

Great product, but I would make...
Great product, but I would make a change to make it easier to use. The handles on both the clamps get in the way when using the right side of the jig with some routers and when using larger 1x8 peices and must be unscrewed, removed after installing your material and before cutting. I would recommend using tapered pins instesd of the screws in the handles.

I guess I would consider myself a woodworker with moderate skills and not that much experience. I bought the jig and hoped it wouldn't be too hard to get the joints right. It turned out to be very easy. I had to make 2 minor adjustments, then banged out the blind dovetail joints for some drawers and they came out perfect. It is a lot easier than I thought and would recommend the jig.

With a little practice on some scrap pieces of wood, I was able to make eight drawers with perfect dovetail joints on the drawer fronts. I had cut all the dovetails by hand for the drawer backs, but knew there was a better way. This tool with the dust collector attached made the job easy and quick. Outstanding product.

This is the first dove tail...
This is the first dove tail jig I have owned. Although set up takes a little time, I had my drawers made fairly quickly. I only have 2 complaints. One is that the end stops do flex somewhat and would be better out of a harder plastic. Also to cut the right sides of a drawer, the upper cam lever gets in the way of the router base and has to be removed first. These are minor things and overall I am happy and would buy it again.

I have to admit, I was...
I have to admit, I was a bit confused with the instructions that came with the dovetail jig mainly because I'm a novice at dovetails, but once I found the YouTube video, it all made sense. I immediately went out and started experimenting and on my first try, I succeeded in making an extremely tight joint. I am making six of the same pie boxes and last night I cut every one of the tails and the pins without having to adjust a thing. They all turned out tight and perfect. I was about to send the jig back until I found your video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMX2lpLVLqM That saved me and I really am impressed with this jig.

I owned a cheap half blind...
I owned a cheap half blind jig, but needed through tails for the cabinet project I was building. It was well packaged, nice jig, came with dust collector, and three router bits, and a special collet for 8 mm conversion from 1/2". 1. Directions: Excellent, I think my wife could do it and she doesn't know a router from a table saw. 2. Price: Where in the world are you going to find a jig this nice for this price?3. Quality: Heavy unit, well made, not sure on plastic template. I'm sure aluminum would raise the price, so the plastic works. Now a complete idiot might let the bit hit the template if he didn't read directions about small shim under top piece of work, but by the way, I am an idiot. 4. Bits: those are nice bits. I don't like 8mm, or the collet though. I ruined the bit after the first drawer, it was stuck and just would not come out. I tried everything, finally just grabbed it with vise grip and twisted it out. Oh by the way I am an idiot. I am sure it was me not the collet but I tried again on the straight bit, same problem. So I just use my other dovetail bits now. The collet was locked in the tight and the bit just wouldn't budge. Read the directions and you will love the jig.

I am surely not an expert woodworker but I wanted to try dovetails w/o spending a lot. This jig fills the bill. It was easy to set up, easy to operate. I was making tight joints the first day. It seems to be a good machine.

I just received my dovetail jig and have already cut my first set of through dovetails. They are very clean and impressive. Rockler should be proud of this product. It's well constructed, simple and if I can use it anyone can. I've just started to get back into woodworking again and look forward to doing business with you guys. I'm so very pleased.
