- Mini Ergonomic Carbide Turning Tool, Round
Overview
This Round Carbide Mini Turning Tool from Rockler features a replaceable and rotatable cutter that eliminates the hassle and downtime of sharpening. Simply rotate the carbide cutter for a fresh, sharp edge, and replace it once all available edges have grown dull. The solid carbide cutter also stays sharp for longer when compared with steel, giving you a much longer useful life. Shaft features a flattened back for stability when using the tool rest. The handles are made of solid ash encased with a thick, molded rubber end for an enhanced grip and reduced fatigue.
Features:
- Ideal for giving you a smooth finish on curved, concave surfaces and for general turning applications

I tried a friend's. It is much easier than a spindle gouge and safer, though feels like cheating. You will not learn traditional skills w this, but faster and safer re catches.

Would this work well for hollowing our smaller bowls? I know it would probably not be the best for larger, deeper projects, but maybe 8inch wide by 4 inch deep bowls? I would assume it would be no problem. Thanks!

This tool works incredible
I am used to using traditional lathe tools, but this thing is so sharp and makes the smoothest cuts.

Great tool for turning Pens
Easy to use and stays sharp. Have already turned about 50 Pens with this and still as sharp as when I purchased it Solidly built and should last a lifetime. I would definitely recommend this tool.

Awesome tool
I've used this for over a thousand pens and still haven't had to replace the carbide. Do yourself a favor and get a good diamond sharpener like the credit card size. Use it often and the carbide will stay sharp for a long time. Just touch it up after having turned the carbide through its full revolution.

Sharpest tool in my shed
I purchased my original tool set from Harbor Freight and it claimed to be sharp out of the box. After the difficulty of turning my first peice i stopped by Rockler and picked up this tool. The difference in quality and ability to do its job dropped my jaw to the floor. This is a fantastic tool. 10/10 would buy more.

Great finishing tool.
Believe it or not ,you can get a great shear cut with this tool. You can also get some cool design work done on your smaller items such as Pens. I'm glad I bought it.

I bought this chisel because I...
I bought this chisel because I frankly don't have a gift for sharpening, and my cheap chisels constantly needed it. So I wanted to invest in my first real turning tool, and the promise of something that stayed sharp excited me. The guy at the Rockler store showed me a $200 set of chisels and said "Those are great. I have them. But I never use them since I bought this carbide one." I know why! It's so easy to use and control, and I've turned lots sorts of stuff in the last couple weeks mostly bowls and it's as sharp now as when I bought it. I think I'll have to get a flat one for scraping and flattening, but with some patience even the round one does a great job. I like turning because it's relaxing, but it wasn't relaxing when I was struggling so bad with my other chisels. This one makes me enjoy it again in a big way.
