I have a single car garage wood shop so floor space is important to me. I have a jointer for the shop but only use it to square up the edges of my glue joints etc.
I upgraded my router table so I figure that with these shims I can do the same thing as my jointer for my purposes and sell my jointer and gain some floor space in the process.

I am not yet ready to pick up a jointer. These shims will hopefully simplify the jointing I have done on my router table. In the past, I have been cutting my own shims which gets to be a pain.

Can these shims be modified to use on a Porter-Cable router table?
Jeff L
on Dec 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: i don't see why not. They are made of plastic, so you should be able to cut them or punch holes in them or whatever needs to be done. They are all different sizes and make a great addition to the router table when you want to joint. Hope this helps.

They are made from fairly thin plastic so with a sharp utility knife and a ruler, I'm sure you can make additional slots to fit whatever fence you have. They fit my MLCS table perfectly and they work great!

Jeff,
I'm not sure what your router fence looks like, but I'm willing to bet they can be modified with a Rat File or your router to fit your fence.
Hope this helps,
Jan

Should not be a problem to adapt them. As long as the Oorter Cable has a somewhat similar fence, you could adapt them. You may just have to elongate the slots to accomodate the PC fence.

Why would I need these? I would think that if I offset my fence by approx. 1/16" I could achieve the result I am looking for.

BEST ANSWER: And these shims are used to offset the fence. Some people use a fence a system that are plum and it maybe easier to have shims with different thicknesses that can be quickly switched out.

1/16" is a lot of material to remove for edge joining. The shims allow for 0.10" maximum and make setup easy, keeping the outfeed MDF perfectly parallel to the infeed MDF.

Great addition to your router table setup!
This makes it possible to use a router table to joint edges. They fit behind the outfeed fence very easily. If they don't fit your bolt pattern, as your own slots to fit. Its quick, and makes a consistent setup easy.

Good value router table shims
Pretty simple product. It does what it's supposed to do. They seem to be durable and will not easily rip/tear/break/crack. I'm pleased with my purchase and they come in handy in many situations.

You can't beat the price on these shims. They are not meant for the smaller Rockler Router fence, but that was an easy fix. I had to add an additional slot to fit the smaller fence. Pretty easy after securing all in place with only one bolt & then drilling through all shims. The hole was then elongated with a dremel using a drum sander.

The pre-cut slots don't fit the Bench Dog ProFence that comes with Package #2, but a pair of scissors easily fixes that. The method described in D Down's review is the way to use them. They greatly increase the versatility of the router table. It's a great way to avoid having to buy a jointer and still make nice tight joints.

These were purchased to shim the fence on a different router table than they were made for and of course the bolt holes didn't line up. However, being made of thin plastic, it was an easy enough task to trace one of the slots onto the other shims and then cut new bolt clots in to all of them with a small pair of scissors. A punch was used at the top on the thicker shims, to produce a nice rounded edge. They are very bendable, so did not break or crack.

Good idea, but the slots don't line up with various fences. It would be an improvement for the product to have the pre-cut slots allow for some horizontal movement. I had to cut additional slots to fit into my fence. I bought the shims for jointing on the router and don't really need a set of six. I would pay the same money for one or two shims with different slot patterns to better fit the variety of fences on the market.

The shims are fine - the thicknesses were accurate and consistent, and the plastic is tough enough for the intended use.Actual package: four 0.010", one 0.020", one 0.040" (total thickness of 0.100" possible)I am using these on my own home-made fence, so I have to cut another slot in them to match my bolts. It would be nice to offer a set of these shims with no slots - they would work better for customizing to the many fence designs out there, as well as miscellaneous applications in the shop.

I found it much easier to...
I found it much easier to set up with shims by placing the thickness you desire behind the outfeed fence. Then place the same thickness either in front of or behind the infeed fence. Then use a straight edge to set the fence so the straight edge just touches the cutter blade. Test with scrap to make certain you are just barely touching the work piece. Then remove the shims on the infeed fence. You will then remove exactly the thickness of material equal to the shims behind the outfeed fence.I note one possible improvement which could be made on the shims. When dropped behind the fence they are somewhat difficult to remove. If they were longer, they would stick out from behind the end of the fence as far as the end of the metal angle mounting bar. They could then be removed with ease. I tested this with some handmade shims. Works great!
