Yes. If you hit metal it will likely break a tooth, so it is good to have a spare cutter on the other end.

If the screw head is broken off will this tool work?
Paul B
on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. it will work fine. Just be sure to go as deep as the end of the screw is. If the plug of wood with the screw in it doesn't stay in the bit or break off easily you may not have gone deep enough. A screwdriver or small chisel will break the plug off and you can lift it out.

My deck screws go through the deck board and into the joice would I need to drill a hole in the joice to remove the screw ?
Joe O
on Apr 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Since there are threads on the screw, I would say yes. If you use the extractor just through the top board and can remove enough material to get a pair of pliers (vise grips) to turn the screw out, that may work. If you do drill into the joist you can always plug the hole with a dowel. Be sure to use water proof glue for an outside project.

Not necessarily. You can drill with this style of bit thru deck board. Then maybe a small chisel to free the wood around the upper shank. Then vice grip or strong needle nose to twist screw back out.

Since the extractor spins in the opposite direction from the screw threads, it will likely work unless the screw is in a knot.

BEST ANSWER: Yes. I have used it to extract a #8 brass screw that had a missing head and was embedded in a solid piece of walnut. A dowel the same diameter as the hole created was filled with a section of a hardwood dowel glued in place. After the glue hardens you can drill a pilot hole for a new screw.

Excellent value
These broken screw extractor bits are a single purpose tool that when you need it, you can't do without it. Having both ends of the extractor bits ground makes them an excellent value for the price.

Perfect accessory for the problem.
The head of a screw broke where a door hinge is fastened to the frame. Saw the answer on a YouTube video and found it on Rockler's website. Reasonably priced. Fast delivery. Faster removal of the broken screw. Filled the hole with a dowel, and the hinge is ready to be mounted. Love it.

Make them work in both directions.
They are well made and I can make them serve my purpose, but I wish they were made with teeth set to cut rotating clockwise so I could could use them Directly in my drill press. That would make them a lot nicer to use.

Totally amazed!
These are extractors are amazing. I tried ez outs, left handed drills and noting would remove the broken screws in my oak door hinges. I bought this screw extractor and within 30 sec I had the first broken screw out! I quickly removed the second broken screw. I was so impressed with this tool that I purchased two other sizes. I am so glad I decided not to give up and give these a try.

Saved my butt
A semester long art project was jeopardized by a broken off #12 screw in a piece that could not easily be replaced. The extractor let me pull out a narrow plug surrounding the shaft of the screw. Worked like a charm. Be careful, though...it's SHARP.

Screw extractor
This is the second one of these I have purchased, they work very well but if you hit the screw the teeth of the extractor break. Not the tools fault but mine. Keep that in mind tho as they snap fairly easily. But as you see I did buy again.

AAAAAAAAAA TOOL
I am writing this review only because of the several, less than, satisfactory reviews. This tool is a life saver when you do not want to destroy surrounding wood surfaces with digging damage trying to remove old broken head screws. This works best and great when the head is stripped out or broken off. Requires you to plug hole and redrill but that's much better than any other screw remover I have ever used. Perfect tool for a specific use. Outstanding.

Screw Extractor
What a neat tool! I had a screw broken off flush in my grand daughters color guard rifle. There was no margin for error in removing the broken screw. This extractor effortlessly removed the broken screw, ready to accommodate a wood dowel to finish the job. I highly recommend this tool.

Screw Extractor
I needed to temporarily remove some cabinets which were nailed into the wall studs with 3 inch finishing nails, which were set below the surface of the cabinet frame. by using these screw extractor, I was able to get ahold of the nail heads and extract the nails without damaging the cabinets.

screw extractors
Have used both 1/4 and 3/8 extractors many times and preform well. Found better to use larger than required cutter(oversize) because extractors are brittle and if screw was installed at angle, and your drilling straight, tends to catch the cutter tip and breakage can occur. But I rate the cutter very high.

Remove rusty nails.
I have used the 1/4 inch size to remove rusty nails from the siding of my house. I live in Hawaii where there is a lot of salt in the air. I removed over 200 hundred rusty nails. Since the tool is hollow, I drilled down into the wood until the whole nail came out inside the tool. I then inserted a 1/4 inch dowel into the hole with some glue. I then nailed a stainless steel nail into wood near the dowel.

Outstanding
While building a grandfather clock for my daughter as a wedding gift, one of the hinge screws broke off while installing the hinges to the door frame. i wasn't about to build another frame. I checked locally at several big box stores and couldn't find what I needed to remove the broken screw. I went on line and looked at Rockler and found what I needed.I called, ordered, and in a few days the extractors came in the mail. I ordered all 3 sizes just to be sure. The extractor worked as expected. Just go slow, clean the chips out and break the plug out. plug the hole and reinstall the hinge. Thanks Rockler for having what we need and the quick response.

Worked flawlessly - good product
I was skeptical of the product based on reviews here. I purchased the 3/8" extractor to remove #6 screws (no head). I used the extractor on two screws with broken heads burried in a cherry board (leg of a bed); each screw had about 1/2" of screw in the board. I took my time making sure to get the screw as near as center as possible. I made sure to keep my drill in reverse. I made sure to back out the extractor every 1/8th of an inch or so and cleared the waste to check on my progress relative to the screws position. Removing the screws worked easily for both with no broken bits. It did take me about 15 minutes to get the plug with screw out of the bit after the successful removal without chewing up my hand. Good buy, highly recommend.

I used the 1/4 " size to remove 3 small hinge screws broken off deep in cherry. I used a guide to start indicated by instructions, then pulled it out to clear it frequently. I just screwed a deck screw into it with my fingers to clear it out. One screw backed out - the other two were exposed enough I could unscrew them with medical hemostats. Then plug the holes.A great product that saved my project. Don't know how I would have gotten those screws out without it.

As an orthopedic surgeon we occasionally have to remove broken screws, and use a similar product. I bought the Rockler 1/4 inch extractor to remove some broken screws from wood trim on my boat, and found it to be spectacular and work just as advertised. I chucked it according to directions, lined it up with the screw axis, applied gentle pressure and rotated the chuck by hand until I was 1/8 inch in, then started the drill slowly in reverse, checking my progress every 10 seconds, with cleaning the teeth; within 1 to 2 minutes I had the screw out, then removed two more. Worked like a charm, saved me a lot of time, and left a hole easily filled with a 1/4 inch dowel. Thank you!

It works.
Fortunately, I bought tow sizes because the smaller diameter extractor broke in the process. I had to carefully use the large diameter extractor to remove the broken pieces as well as the broken screw But it did work and I imagine I will need to use them again sometime in the future. (note remember to drill a proper size pilot hole when screwing into hardwood like Oak.)

Screw extractor
It is a wonderful tool, however it does not work in all drill presses as some won't run in reverse however a regular hand held does work but is rather tricky to align the center.Otherwise Great Tool!

Very fragile but got the job done.
I bought all three sizes when I recently needed to remove some broken hinge screws. I used only the 1/4 in because the screws were very small and the material was thin. There was no way to clamp a block with a pilot hole in place without a lot extra work but the screws were broken off about 3/16 deep so I drilled a 1/4 in pilot down to the screws. I started the extractor very slowly and stopped often to see if it was centered on the screw. After going only about a. 1/2 in deep I wad able to remove the screws with some hd tweezers. I did hit the side of 1screw and it broke off 4 of the 5 teeth. Very fragile but did get the job done and saved work of having to relocate hinges. Nice product.

Did the job!
I used the extractors to remove trim tab screw fragments from the transom of my boat that lives in salt water. I used the 1/4" model and first a drill bit to get through the fiberglass. My only problem with the product is you must be perfectly aligned with the screw or you will break off the teeth when it hits metal. Using a snug machine screw inside the extractor, I turned it into an epoxy injector to force glue into the transom wood before installing new screws. Simple repair!

Good, but be careful.
Good. Be sure to get the correct size. Don't forget to use it in reverse, and practice. If you use it on a nicely finished piece, or heirloom, you don't want the extractor to walk around scratching it. I think it would work best in a drill press.

it works
read the other reviews first including how delicate this "tool" is and approached using it carefully. Removed screw from some hard Poplar successfully. at first i didn't think it was working but kept drilling with the extractor and then i felt it jump a little and thats when i found the screw had been released.

Screw extractor
I have used these several times mostly in hardwood. They work well and are about the only way I have found to remove screws with messed up heads. The extractors must be used very carefully because the metal is very thin and easily broken. I am on my third set. Note that the drill must be run in reverse and hold it straight but do not apply excessive force.

With some broken-off screws on my boat, I ordered all three of the extractors; not being able to determine from the product description whether the sizes indicated were ID or OD. Following the directions (important!), I was able to successfully remove the screws and plug the resulting holes with dowels. While it is difficult to use any drill bit without a point or spur, these did the job intended with a centering jig made from a scrap of wood. I know of no other tool that would have worked.

screw extractor
Ordered a 1/4 extractor and when I received it I chucked it up in the drill and went to work. Used a small square as a guide to make sure I was level and straight, but evidently the screw was a little crooked, because I broke off a tooth and it basically quit working on other screws. I had for extractions and as I started to extract the second screw I could not keep the extractor from wandering around the screw shaft and chewing up the finished surface. Discovered missing tooth and turned it around to the other end and it worked as advertised. It would have been nice if I would have known it would have been better if I got a bigger model. If I ever have this problem I will have to order larger extractors and I am sure it will do the job expected

Best extractor for removing damaged screws that are too small to drill a pilot to receive traditional screw extractors. It works well in soft woods where as the chuck can grip the extractor without tightening the chuck to the point it alters the shape of the extractor. It could spin in the chuck if not tightened sufficiently.
The round extractor is thin steel and is easily broken if the cutting edge comes in contact with a screw or nail embedded in the work.
If the extractor was welded to a solid shaft to mount in a chuck it could improve the usefulness of the tool.
I wouldn't be without a set of these in my tool chest.

Another good tool for the tool box.
Useful in helping remove rusty nail heads from trim on back porch. Has a tendency to walk away from target.
