- SD508 Freud Dado Set
Overview
The SD500 Series of dado sets cuts everything from veneered plywoods and laminates to solid wood, chip and splinter-free with a super smooth, flat bottom. The SD500 Series dado sets were the first to include a 3/32" thick chipper and has the flexibility of an adjustable dado to handle today's undersized plywood. This allows the cut width to be adjusted in 1/32" increments and doubles the number of slot widths available. A shim set is also included with the dado set for fine adjustments. Use on all table saws, and radial arm saws for cutting slots, grooves, dadoes, and rabbets in softwood or hardwood.

Does this work with a DeWalt DE745 portable saw?
Paul A
on Apr 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, I do not know if it will work with your saw. however, it only works partially with my table saw because the arbor is not long enough on my saw, I can only get a few of the blades on and still get the washer and nut on the arbor to hold the blades so I can only cut about 1/2" dado. Make sure your arbor is the right length and thickness for the hole in these blades.

You shouldn't have any problems, The Freud company site states that this set will work on all table, portable, and radial saws.

I've read online that the 745 doesn't allow for dadoes at all. That's one reason I didn't buy it.

Easy, Accurate Dados
Freud's SD508 super dado set was a pleasure to use, easy set up and yielded accurate cuts.
I chose this set for making 1-1/2" D x 3-1/2"W dados in red oak legs for a new work bench. First I mic'd the width of several teeth on each blade and chipper to confirm their individual widths--these were accurate to + .001". Next I made a 1/2" stack (without shims) and measured the overall width--total width was slightly over .500" but I was making several passes (width & depth) so this was insignificant. On measuring blade height (protrusion) through the table saw top I noticed one of the outside blade teeth was .003" taller than the rest; I set the height to match the tallest tooth and went to work, slowly making passes. The side wall cut was extremely smooth with no burns or chatter marks; the bottom of the cut was relatively smooth, however, there was a noticeable, but very fine, groove at the bottom of each through pass that marked the location of the highest tooth. This was easily remedied with light sanding. There was occasional fuzziness on the end edge of cuts when I traveled too fast. I detected no vibration in the stack while making numerous passes.
I am very pleased with the results and would highly recommend the Freud SD508 Super Dado set.

Does an excellent job.
I had been using a router to cut a rabbeted or lap joint in 1" pine for bee hives. I bought the Freud dado set thinking that it might be easier and faster. The dado set makes a clean side and bottom that works perfect. Much faster and easier. Well worth the money.

High Quality Dado Set
Great dado set. Extremely sharp and cuts true and smooth flat bottomed dados. The stacked dado set comes with plenty of chippers of different thicknesses and shims to adjust the width of cut.
The set comes with a DVD with instructions on how to operate the adjustable dado and tips on how to make a sled. It does not, however, provide instructions on how to operate the stacked dado but it was easy enough to figure out. It does come with a very handy chart explaining which combination of cutters and chippers to use to achieve different dado widths. Very helpful!
Would definitely recommend this high quality dado for the discerning craftsman.

These work great and are well balanced.
With both the cutter and chipper blades this blade can remove lots of material quickly with nice smooth cuts. Stacked dado always has more setup time, but worth the effort. Nice storage box to hold all of the parts and pieces. This is one product where you get what you pay for. My 1st project using this was doing over 1000 cross cuts in making some dentil molding and never had an issue. Make sure it is used with a good table insert for the blad that will fit tight by the blade. This is being used on a Saw Stop with the proper blade stop cartridge.

cuts like butter
i used this set to make 3/4 wide x 5/8 deep dados in oak... i thought i would need to make 2 passes because of the width and depth... made a trial cut and it was so smooth and easy i went for 1 pass... made 128' of dados with no issues... great product.

Best dado set I've used
This is my second dado set. The first lasted over 15 years in my commercial cabinet shop. It leaves a superior flat bottom, chip free cut. The set comes with several shims to fine tune the width and accommodate today's undersized panels. The 8" set requires more horse power when stacked 3/4" +.

Great customer service
I received my first set of dado blades and it had two right hand outside blades and a damaged case. I think Freud packaged it incorrectly. I called Rockler customer service and they sent out another set immediately, without question and pre-paid return postage. The replacement set works great. The 3/32 inch blade is terrific and is great when working with plywood. The dado fits perfectly. I had some hesitation when purchasing this set. The mass of the chipper blades takes a long time stop spinning but so far it has not been an issue.

Nice unit, better service!
Got this set-up to begin a cabinet project I've been planning for a while. For the most part it performs as advertised: clean smooth cuts, flat bottoms. Unfortunately, I found my 1/16th chipper had a long tooth which would groove the bottom wherever it was placed. Fortunately, Rockler and Freud stand behind their products and they sent a replacement with free return without a moments hesitation. Very, very reassuring customer support.

Excellent Dado Set - who cares about the case?
I use this dado set on a regular basis, primarily in cherry, maple, oak, and a variety of plywood types; and I think this set is excellent. I never have tear-out and it leaves a very clean edge all around. Yes, the case is cheap, but it works long enough to build your own case for saw blades. Besides, judging the case is like complaining about a table saw because you don't like the color of the paint, it will never impact your project one bit!

Great blades, packaging a disaster
I have found these blades to be everything the others say about them - clean edges, flat bottoms (at least for the chippers I have used so far). My only issue is the packaging. The interior packaging was broken when I received the package. Blades and chippers were sliding around in the case, obviously baking against each other. The plastic forms holding the blades are in no way sufficient for the weight of the blades. It is unacceptable for a nearly $200 set of blades to be packaged so poorly. I will have build or buy something to store these blades because this plastic case will not provide enough protection.
