Is this self-centering bit made for Rockler by Insty Bit? What is the size of the jig hole or the outside diameter of the self centering bit sleave? Is it 3/8" or a different diameter? Does the jig plus bit combo come with a Rockler Insty bit or another brand of self-centering bit?

Self-Centering Bits

JIG IT® Shelving Jig w/Self-Centering Bit
BEST ANSWER: My original order came with an Insty bit with the template. The holes in the template are 3/8 inch and the bit
I subsequently ordered for 5mm holes also was an Insty bit. There is a "step" on the bottom of the bit which is 3/8 inch which fits into the hole. Did not measure the outer diameter of the bit housing as the step ensures that the bit is centered. Hope this answers your questions.

Yes the bit is made by Insty-bit. Mine has a 5mm inside drill bit. The jig hole is 3/8" dia. I believe the plus does,
I got an extra just so I wouldn't be done any.

You buy the hole not the bit
This bit easily halves the time to drill bookshelf holes. Just push and move to the next one. It does not jam or clog with wood fibers and makes perfect holes.

Self Centering Bit
I haven't used this specific size yet, but the other bit I own is fantastic. It fits in the jig perfectly and drills the hole to the proper depth without slipping. The dust does build up inside the sleeve, but it is quick and easy to remove it . This bit is so much faster, easier, and more accurate than using a drill bit with a depth collar or tape on the drill bit that this is a small price to pay, especially since I deal with the dust using other methods, too. I haven't accidentally drilled all the way through a piece since I started using this bit, and the holes are always deep enough if I keep the dust cleared out. No more re-drilling when the shelf peg won't fit!

Self Centering Bit
Works very well for its intended purpose. I used it to make my library book shelf, I framed a wall with 4X8 CVG Fir 9' tall x 12' Long, then used a home made jig to drill all the shelf pin holes
it worked great, it plunged into the wood very smoothly, it was easy to make good clean, crisp holes to hold the shelf pins.

This is the second bit I have ordered and used. I lost the first one! We made our own drilling jig out of a piece of 1/4" Masonite and had a shop custom drill it on his CNC machine.
It worked flawless, I mean the drill bit also. Always enjoy doing business with you and have enjoyed both the quality of the products and the service. Thank you.

This is one of those tools...
This is one of those tools that you end up wishing you had gotten years ago. Along with the shelving jig, it will raise your level of precision and provide you with personal satisfaction in your projects. If you do happen to accidentally dismantle the spring loaded assembly like I did, the easiest way to put it back together is to assemble it without the spring first and lock down the set screw. Then remove the spring retaining spring clip which is at the front below the chip clearing holes, slide the brass washer, spring and stainless washer in that order over the assembly! compress these three parts with needle nose pliers and snap the spring clip back into position where the score mark is around the barrel. I found using a bench vise to hold the base of the bit while doing this is best.

These bits together with the shelf...
These bits together with the shelf jig-it make drilling shelf pin holes a breeze. Word of caution however if you need to adjust the depth of the bit - do NOT unscrew the small inset screw more then necessary to loosen the bit. Removing the screw farther results in the entire spring loaded mechanism to fly apart. It can be put back together but takes some patience.

I have owned and used this...
I have owned and used this self centering bit and the shelf jig it for years and drilled thousands of holes with it and it works great and is a big timesaver.the problem with chip removal,if yoy drill your hole and then run the drill bit back into the hole a second time it clears the chips most of the time. Also a dull drill bit will clog more often and a corded drill that runs higher rpms works better than a slower cordless drill.

Works as promised
This shelf peg drilling bit worked just fine. It was a replacement for one I had bought earlier. A word of caution: don't accidentally loosen the set screw too far, or the whole bit assembly will spring apart. This happened to my previous bit. When everything came apart, the parts shot out due to the pressure releasing from the spring, and shot all over my shop. I think I lost an integral part of the assembly as I was never able to put it back together again.

I wore out my first 5mm self-centering bit and bought a replacement. The newer bit doesn't leave a round dent around the hole and I found I get no tear out if I use maximum RPM setting on my drill. This is one of my favorite Rockler products.

This product work very good for the project I was working on. It had one minor flaw in that it the centering sleeve would not retract every time I drilled a hole. Chips would build up between the sleeve and drill preventing it from returning back to the centering position.

Making some cabinets for a neighbor...
Making some cabinets for a neighbor and had 240 shelf pin holes to drill. Your jig makes alignment simple with accurate indexing. The comments by others concerning chip clogging are correct, BUT I found that if you insert the bit into the jig, start the drill AND LET IT SPIN A FEW SECONDS BEFORE drilling the hole. Then let IT SPIN AGAIN AFTER completing the hole, the chip clearing problem was greatly reduced. Just can't be in a hurry!

I used this bit, along with a home made shelf pin jig, to build a couple of Shaker style bookcases. What a time saver. A really great tool.

I bought the 5mm version to...
I bought the 5mm version to add a few more shelf positions to some new cabinets. First I made a jig from a strip of 1/8" tempered hardboard by drilling a pair of properly spaced 5mm "locator" holes followed by several 3/8" guide holes. Using shelf pins to register the jig into the existing holes I then drilled the new pin holes with the bit and guide. The bit cut clean holes at the surface but did tend to clog up with shavings after only a couple of holes as per another reviewer's experience. If I had to drill a bunch of holes I would find that frequent clearing of the bit to be a problem. The design should be revised for better chip ejection. Other than that, the self-centering bit worked well.

Used this and the 1/4" Self Centering bit on my electronics cabinet with the jig and they worked very well except that after a few holes the bit had to be cleared of debris after every two or three holes. The design should be worked on so the bit clears the debris.

Not well built but best choice for this task
This is the same design bit that comes with Rockler's shelf pin jig. The spring load is retained in place by brass washers on both ends. The washers failed on my 1/4" bit after 6 sets of left and right panels. Without the spring load to retract the drill into the bit it was not practical to use it so it had to be replaced. Other brands that I researched did not appear to be suitable to work with the jig so I bit the bullet and bought this replacement. I will have to try to limit the pressure I apply to the drill to avoid breaking another bit. At almost $25 after adding tax and shipping I won't buy any more self centering bits of this line to use with other jigs.

Bit Dulls Quickly
The jig was working as advertised for 60+ holes. Then smoke started coming from the bit and I couldn't get it to drill a hole. I had been clearing the wood chips to prevent a jam, but still had this problem. Tried to sharpen the bit, but didn't help. I am left with no choice but to order another bit to finish my project. Very expensive for a small project.
I am a hobbist but would not recommend this for a production shop.

Helpful but...
After drilling about 40 holes spring assembly came loose. Couldn't get c-ring off to reassemble. Ended up using without spring assembly. Works ok but not like it should. Nut holding assembly together seems prone to loosening and next to impossible to reassemble.

Self Centering Bit
I purchased the listed self-centering bit to use with a cribbage template. The housing of the bit rotated with the bit and melted the acrylic template to the point it will probably only be usable one more time (I have only used it once so far). I was disappointed by this.

The one that I just bought and needed desperately to finish job, wobbled so bad it over sized the holes and grommets fall out.it was a 9/32..I ended up having to put a dab of gel super glue to the edge of every hole to get the sleeves to stay in .It made the job take twice as long. And they jamb up with saw dust you have to clear them out at least every other hole,if not more.
