Can it be used to join edge to surface?
Freddie
on Oct 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If the edge is thick enough, you can use the jig to drill dowel holes. You will need dowel centers to align the edge holes with the surface. If you set the jig on the surface it may help guide the drill for the surface holes.

Can all the holes be the same size?
Arlow J
on Sep 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they can all be the same, or mixed sizes, or just one hole as is your choice. Mine work very well when I joined the head of a rocking horse (2 inches thick) to the body. They slid together perfectly without any binding or misalignment. I wish I would have had one many years ago.

My porch railings need additional length due to wood rot. The supplemental length will be 5 inches at each end. I would like to dowel join the supplemental stock to the existing stock by drilling perpendicular through the supplemental stock into the existing stock to a depth of about 3 inches. The alignment needs to be perfect and the total hole length needs to be 8 inches. Can this be done with this jig?

From your description, it does sound like you could drill that hole. You will need to make sure that you have enough room to put the jig on. But from my use, this is an excellent jig to get a perfect hole in thick timbers.

How wide will the jig open ?
A shopper
on May 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It opens to 6 inches. It is a sturdy and precision made tool. I used it on 2 1/5' lumber and it worked perfectly and the jig centers right on the mark. This is the first time my two pieces of lumber slid together squarely and I didn't have to pound them together to fit. It is a little pricey but I use it quite often so it was a good buy for me.

I need to drill holes for stainless cable to pass through on 4 x 4 posts. Will this product insure the holes will align on both sides of the posts?
Dennis L
on Nov 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I used the doweling jig for the same purpose and it worked great. I used brad point drills and drilled from both sides of the posts to avoid blow out from a drill bit exiting the wood. I installed my cable at on 3" centers and had a template with holes on 3" centers that I used to mark the 4 x4 posts. These templates are available commercially or you can make your own. Once I marked the posts I attached the doweling jig and proceeded to drill. The doweling jig automatically takes care of the left right centering and the depth of the jig alignment hole was sufficient to keep me square to the post. I also had a level that was built into my drill that I used as back up conformation that I was level with the drill. Ric

Provided your distance from top of post is the same both sides, this will center on the width of the post. Personally I used the jig to start the hole (2" deep) and then completed it after removing the jig, from the same side.

I need to join 2x6 side rail to a 2x6 up right post, will locate 2 1/4" holes at the side of the 5 & 1/2 face of the post and align them to matching on the end of the side rail?
Bob G
on Mar 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not sure if I fully understand what you are trying to do. Are you trying to drill holes in the center of the 5 1/2 inch face of a 2 x 6, and then attach the end of the 1 1/2 in width of a 2 x 6 to it by drilling holes in the center of the 1 1/2inch width? If so, then yes the drill jig will work. It will drill in the center of any piece of wood up to 6 inches. If you want to off-set the holes from the center, it will not work.

What is the hole layout in the block (dia & spacing)? Can I drill 2 of the same size holes without moving the jig?
Mark B
on Jun 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: the block has 5 different sized drilling guides alined along the center line of the centering block from front to back. You can't drill holes of the same size without loosening and sliding the jig to the next hole location, but there are centering lines etched into the side of the block at the bottom that line up with the centers of each of the 5 guide holes, so lining up the jig is fast and very easy...and accurate. All you need to do is draw a pencil line perpendicular to each location where you want to drill and slide the jig until the etched line and pencil line intersect.

The jig self centers along the length of the jig. The jig has an alignment mark on the side of each diameter hole that allows quick alignment of the hole along the length of the piece. You have to move the jig for each new hole of the same diameter.

No, to drill two holes the same size you will have to move the jig. There are 5 holes in the jig, each one a unique diameter. 1/2, 7/16, 3/8, 5/16, and 1/4

Can this jig be used for off centering holes?
David E

BEST ANSWER: I was able to off center holes by adding a shim or small piece of lumber to one side of the jig. As long as the combined thickness of the shim and the lumber doesn't exceed the size limitations of the jig it is fine.

I haven’t done that, but it looks possible. There are two set screws and a nut that holds one of the fences in place. I would think that by loosening these, that fence could be moved to provide an off-center hole.

Centering Jig Works Great
I purchased this to join the head of a rocking horse to the body. The wood was 2 inches in thickness. It worked well and the two parts slid together nicely and were straight and square when glued up. It is a well made tool and very accurate. It is a little expensive to purchase, but I am sure it will out last me in durability.

I tried other so called "professional" doweling jigs but they were junk compared to this tool. This was the one used in the plan that I had but I thought I could get away with using one of the others. Boy, was I wrong. The did not self-center like this one does and had so much play in them that I ended up with bad results. I had all the dowel work done in the time it took me to try and get one decent one with the other jigs. Thanks Rockler for providing such excellent tools!!

Purchased the jig for thick timbers...
Purchased the jig for thick timbers as I needed a capacity of 3.5 inches. Worked like a charm. I found that wood dust created by the drilling process would fill in the alignment marking scribe making it very easy to see with the little help of a portable shop light. Purchased the jig to create bunk bed posts. The stock I was using was 1.75" thick so I ripped two pieces 3.5" in width and then connected two pieces using a dowel joint every 7 inches. Ended up with a bed post 3.5" square with each post having approx. 10 dowel joints. After gluing the dowels into one piece, the dowel holes on the second piece fit like a glove. This is a great jig and is a must if your woodworking uses a lot of dowel joints.

Worked great right out of the box. I used it while making a baby bed for my first grandchild. I couldn't be happier with the results. Make sure you mark your center points dark enough to align the jig and you'll have no problems. Be sure to keep the jig flush with your work surface or your holes will be angled.

The jig worked well. I used it to attach items of different thicknesses, and the alignment was consistent. A little difficult to see the mark, but workable.

I have the other self centering...
I have the other self centering doweling jig that opens to 2" but the legs on my project required 2 1/4". It worked great. I did not have any trouble with aligning the jig. It is fast and easy. It has cut at least two days off of this project compared to using mortise and tenon joinery. It may not be as strong but the last crib I made with dowels is still holding together. I used brad point bits to do the drilling. It does wear the bits out faster but I can't imagine what the job would be like without this jig. It was well worth the price I paid for it. I also use it to align the threaded inserts that I use for fastening the bed sides. There is no doubt that my inserts will line up with the bolts.

Have used this jig for quite some time. Sometimes hard to align 'til you get used to it. Have a set of sharp bits that are used only with jig.

Quality product, but you pay for it.
Love it, it works perfectly and is well built. Pricey, but a good investment.

I like this tool
This tool drills a perpendicular hole directly in the center of the table leg or crossmember or whatever you are doweling
