- Sewing Machine Lift Mechanism
Overview
With this Sewing Machine Lift Mechanism, your sewing machine can emerge from within the table then simply retract, concealing within the table again when not in use. A latch securely locks the mechanism in place to create a steady platform that is adjustable to your choice of two different working heights. The airlift mechanism mounts to the underside of your table top and the back of the cabinet. Mechanism is designed to lift and lower a sewing machine up to 30-35 lbs. in weight. Mechanism can be adjusted to fit most free arm sewing machines.

My sewing machine is no more than 12" high and from one end to the other is about 18". Will this lift accommodate that size? Also, I have a Singer Embroidery machine which is much wider. Can you tell me the measurement requirements of this lift: (1) from the table to top of machine; (2) from side to side, lengthwise; and how wide can it be?
Jenny D
on Nov 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Sorry for the delay in responding.
My wife's Bernina B580 is ~16" wide and ~13" tall. The lift should accomadate your Singer sewing machine. Your embroidery machine, is it an attachment to your sewing machine or a separate machine? My wife's is an attachment that attaches when the sewing machine is fully elevated on the lift so that the bottom of the sewing machine is level with the top of the table.
The lift height is adjustable. I was lucky and didn't have to adjust height. There are 3 heights. Full down machine completely beneath top of table. Full up so you can use the attachment base or slide shirt sleeves etc over the base. And finally a mid level that has the stitch plate level with the table top.
If I understand correctly the lift should conceal a sewing machine that is ~15" tall. Depending upon table thickness and thickness of base machine is mounted to.
As far as width of machine it will accomadate. I would say as a guess 30" maybe wider. Keep in mind lift is heavy duty but balancing the weight and mounting it to a sturdy frame are very important.
Hope that helps.

With the machine in the fully stowed position (all the way down) sitting on a 3/4 plywood platform which is attached to the lift, the distance from the top of the platform to the bottom of the table is 13 inches. A 12 inch high sewing machine can be easily accommodated. The side to side and lengthwise measurements are whatever you choose to make, My platform is 12" deep by 19" wide but it could be wider or deeper if needed.

The lift will bolt onto a board that your machine will sit on. The board can be any size. However, the lift itself is intended to go into a sewing cabinet and you need the plans to make the cabinet or the ability to adapt the cabinet to the lift. See the top and bottom? Those must be attached to strong supports to anchor the list.

Is the mechanism always mounted on the back wall of the cabinet? Is it made to mount there or can it be placed on side wall of cabinet?
Marilyn D
on Mar 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mounting on the back centers the machine on the lift mechanism. It could be mounted on the side, but I'm not sure how it would function with the load hanging on the front edge. Because now the weight would not be centered over the mechanism

What sort of cover have you came up with to mask the hole in the countertop when the sewing machine is down? Thank you
cindy r
on Jan 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: When I cut out the hole for the sewing machine I also routed out a 1/4"x1/4" "shelf" around the inside of the hole for an insert to sit on.
One insert was made of clear plexiglass so that you could see through it. This insert sat on the routed out "shelf". It was designed to support the fabric when sewing so that it does not drop into the hole needed to raise and lower the sewing machine. It provides the maximum amount of flat working space next to the sewing machine as possible.
A 1/4" insert could be made using plywood or some other material to provide an opaque cover for the sewing machine when hidden beneath. This insert could then be placed on the "shelf" to provide a flat surface allowing other uses for the sewing cabinet.

We used this in a old sewing cabinet that had a folding cover for the top of the cabinet. So when you use the machine the top folds open to provide a additional work space on each side of the cabinet while sewing. When done you fold closed and it has a solid top.

what is the insert that you reference? Is it merely a cover for when the machine is not the whole way up in the cabinet to cover the open space?

on Nov 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If you look at the picture of the plans for building a sewing cabinet, you will see that the sewing machine sits on a board - I called it an inset - that is attached to the top of the lift. Then, you simply push down on the machine or pull up on the machine to retract or lift. The device itself is only the mechanical lift. It must be fastened securely to bottom, back, and top of the supporting cabinet in order to be used. Whether you decide to have a cover over the hole where the machine raises and lowers is, I guess, up to you. But I would think that if you wanted to have a retractable sewing machine, you would want it out of sight and have a cover. I recommend that you look at the plans. http://www.rockler.com/sewing-machine-cabinet-plan

I recommend that you look at the plans. http://www.rockler.com/sewing-machine-cabinet-plan

The lift mechanism gives you 3 possible positions. Sewing machine completely enclosed(top of machine is below the top surface of sewing table), machine partially elevated, and machine fully elevated. The insert I was referring to was for the partially elevated position and fits around, what the wife calls, the sleeve arm. The insert is to prevent the fabric from falling into the gap between the arm and the cutout for raising and lowering the machine since the arm is smaller than the base of the machine.
You can have a second insert to cover the hole when the machine is completely lowered beneath the sewing table.

Could this lift be used for another application, e.g., to lift a mixer in the dead corner of the kitchen?
Sandra O
on Nov 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the lift could be used to lift a mixer in the dead corner of the kitchen if there is room for it. The vertical space needed for your application is 17 inches for the lift, the width of the piece of wood to set the mixer on, and the height of the mixer. Usually, the distance from a countertop to the bottom of overhead cabinets is less than this.

Where can we get a cabinet to attach this lift to?

BEST ANSWER: We had an older "Koala" sewing machine cabinet (good cabinet) but after 10+ years the lift broke. They no longer make or service that model, so I ordered and installed the lift from Rockler, and it works very well.
As for getting a cabinet ? I don't know. e-Bay might be a possibility, but the lift probably already works on most that would be for sale. The cabinet is all melamine and right angles and hinges, so it would be easy to make, if you had plans.

No, it does not attach to the machine, rather to the board that has been cut out of the cabinet according to the size of your machine. The machine just rests atop the board, it is free from the carriage.

The bottom setting is for when it is put away but that leaves 2 more setting to have it above the work table top or level. {or both} It really is an excellent mechanical lift. I built the cabinet and was a little shaky about installing this but it is terrific in my opinion. I'd send a photo but no way to attach it. You shouldn't have any problem.

Hi,
There would be a wooden platform mounted to this lift and the sewing machine would sit on it..
The lift brings the machine and platform to the table top height - just like the machine was sitting on the table.
The lift has 3 positions it stops at. Down for storage - just below the table top surface for flatbed sewing - and all the way to the top, smooth with the top of the table.

Does the bracket attach to the underside of the cabinet tabletop?
Twokamprs
on Mar 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The short answer to your question is, "Yes." My husband built the cabinet for my sewing machine, and the machine sits on a wooden platform (similar to a tabletop). The bracket is attached to the platform. In my cabinet, the platform is always lower than the work surface because I have a plexiglass panel that fits the shape of the machine and creates a flat sewing surface. Even so, the bracket is directly attached to the underside of the platform that holds the machine. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. The lift mechanism is a dandy invention and a quality product.

Thank you Jeff. That really helps. Do you mind a second question. I am replacing a lift in an older Koala cabinet. I have only 3/4" from the back wall of the cabinet to the back edge of the machine opening in the top. Will this unit work for me? Thanks again.
The greenish/blue upright pictured needs 2 3/4" clearance from the back inside the cabinet so the part the slides clears the part you adjust to 'catch' the machine platform at whatever point you choose. The section you remove from the top is around 4 1/2" from the back edge. The actual mechanism is marked Horn (I think its actually made in Italy) and is a cream colour, not thecolour shown. If you only have 3/4" between the back and to clear an edge, this wont work.
Thanks again for your feedback, Jeff. I'm sorry to keep asking you more questions, but I'm trying to picture your message on the pdf instructions which shows a side view of the lift. What do you mean by "so the part the slides clears the part you adjust to catch the machine platform"? I'm also looking at the possibility of mounting the lift on the side of the cabinet where I have 1-1/2" clearance between the inside of the side and the opening for the machine. Maybe this will help me. What is the measurement from your inside back to the part of the carriage that curves upward toward the platform? And doesn't the entire lift remain below the table top even in the highest position? Thanks again for all your help..
OK. Had a typo before. When you measure from where the frame of the lift mechanism (the blue green part)it attached to the cabinet to where the bolts of the sliding part (Cream colour) you need 2 3/4". There is an app. 5/8" space behind the upright portion that is just space - this allows the cream coloured part to pass over the upright section. The 'arms' that attach to the wood section the machine sits on are app. 12" wide. The part you adjust is actually the black mounts - you only see one at the bottom but there is something similar at the top. The cream coloured part slides over the green upright. From the back of the cabinet to the curve of the bracket that supports the machine is app. 4".
Sorry for delay. Yes it does, but there are angle brackets at the top and bottom, maybe just the back could be joined and not the top part of the bracket. Hope this helps, late as it is. Good product.

I don't want to use an insert for a custom sewing table I'm making. I'd rather make the hole the size of my machine. I've seen this a lot when people have there machines fixed/bolted flush with there table. But I haven't seen this much when something like this lift is being used. Is there some necessary reason to have a larger hole and insert, that I am overlooking?
(The insert might just add an extra step for set up/take down. But a fixed flush set up leaves the machine in reach of a curious toddler.)

BEST ANSWER: The insert is necessary because the upper shape of the machine is larger than the dimension at the sewing level of the machine which needs to be flush with the machine and insert. If no insert was used it would not be possible to lower the machine for storage. I can send some pictures if that would help.

The lift provides three positions for your machine and each is adjustable. The first is fully elevated where the bottom of the machine is flush with the table top and you wish to use the arm of the machine for sewing around sleeves etc. The second is fully lowered so that the machine is hidden inside the table leaving a hole in the surface of the table that you can cover with an insert or a folding surface of some sort. The third position is used if you are not using the arm but want a large flat surface for the fabric to lie on and not fall in the hole cut into the table top, thus the insert is required.
The hole for the machine needs to be big enough to accommodate the machine and any attachments including power cords. Sometimes the machines are bigger on the top with attachments than the base. Power cords can come over the top of the table rather than coming up from beneath the table if you prefer or even from the ceiling down.
If you do not plan to use the third position as I described it above then the need for a sleeve is reduced if you have an alternative for covering the hole. And yes using the sleeve in the third position is an extra puzzle piece and I am still refining the design.

I really do not understand your question. I have a light weight new machine. If it were not secured to the lift, it would skitter off as it was raised and lowered. There must be a board bolted to the metal riser. The machine could be set on the board and raised or lowered with the lift mechanism. But the spring for the lift is quite strong and must be pulled sharply up or pushed down firmly to move it. I would recommend removing the machine first before raising or lowering.
If you have an old machine made of metal, it may have enough mass to allow it to be bolted on and moved up and down. But you will still need a platform for it to sit on. And your sewer would not appreciate holes for things to fall down if you do not have a flush surface. If you fear children turning on the machine, remove the electric cord when not sewing. My grandmother made it clear that we did not touch her machine. Her sewing cabinet had a fold over top that covered the opening.

I am not the sew person either. However, this lift allows two heights, foot plate level with the main work surface for sewing large flat pieces, and exposed arm for sewing things like a sleve. I created an custom insert from scrap plywood that fills the hole around the machine arm when the lift/machine (foot plate) is level with the work surface. The "plate" that is attached to lift fills the hole when the lilft/machine is in the fully raised position. Hope this helps.

The spring in the mechanism is not made to lift something that heavy without assistance. I tell my customers that they have to help when raising the machine.

The lift I purchased from Rocklear, as I understand, lifts up to 35 pounds. Unless they have added a new one, the one they currently have holds up to 35 lbs.

BEST ANSWER: I went 4 3/4 but I believe you can go as little as 3 1/2. I have pics taken from under the cabinet with a rule so you can see for yourself. Also I added a solid block under the base of the mechanism glued and screwed through the back because there is a great deal of pressure exerted when raising or lowering the machine. Find a way for me to send the pics. Allen

Will this sewing machine lift mechanism fit my 1968 Sears sewing machine cabinet?
Muriel J
on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The mechanism will most probably "lift" most home sewing machines. Fitting in your cabinet is another matter. Someone will have to measure the top to bottom/side to side/front to back clearances to see if it will work.
Also, the back of the cabinet should be fairly robust for mounting and operating purposes.
I'm pretty sure Sears sold several different styles of sewing machine cabinets in 1968. There is no way of knowing if the lift mechanism will physically fit in your particular application. Sorry.

I purchased a used sewing cabinet with a lift identical to this photo labeled "Horn of America" already installed but not fully functional. Is this the same lift pictured here? If so, how do I get the lift low enough so the front bar reaches the lowest bracket allowing it to lock into place? I have the lowest bracket adjusted up as far as it will go but I still need it to go down another 1 1/2"-2". The shaft that slides up and down on the rod inside the mechanism hits the bottom of the lift plate before the front bar reaches the bracket to lock it into place. Thank you.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, this looks like the same lift that I purchased from Rockler. I'm not sure what your issues is however. I fastened the top bracket to the underneath side of the top of the sewing cabinet. The bottom of the bracket was fastened to the side of the cabinet and there was no adjustment required since it's a solid bracket that fastens top and side. I did adjust the lift based on the heifht required so that the sewing machine was flush with the top of the cabinet. I did have to play with the adjustment to get the right height when the sewing machine was raised up above the cabinet for use. My only suggestion would be to "play" around with the adjustment and it should work.

I bought and installed one a couple of months ago and had the same problem.
If you have not found them, there are two adjustment nuts on the back bar. They are adjusted for min and max height.
If you've already made the adjustments, you'll have to disconnect the entire unit and position it lower. (I had to do the same thing.)

If there is no locking pin it won't work. But with the sewing machine on the lift make sure you push it all the way to the nottom. It should latch and to release just push down again and let up.

The lift is for a heavy machine. If yours is a newer, light weight model, you will need to exert some force to get it to start down. Once it starts, it will drop smoothly down.

How do you get the lift to work?
Nancy F
on Jun 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: First release the lock. The lock is a simple lever that slides over a pin locater between the 2 shelf supper arms. Move the lever away from the pin. You may need to press down on the shelf/machine to get the lever to move. With the lock released press down on the shelf until you hear a click. Then release the pressure until you hear a second click. The machine can then be pushed down to the center or lowest position. When you hear another click release the pressure and the lift will lock in this position. The amount of force necessary to push it down will depend on the weight of your machine. Hope this helps!

The lift has a pressurized pneumatic cylinder that holds the sewing machine in the up position. In order to lower the machine you apply downward pressure on the machine, pushing it down until it latches in the down position. To raise the machine, you push down on it to disengage the latch and the machine will rise back to the up position. The lighter the weight of the machine, the harder it is to push down.

The lift operates by your hand pressure pushing it up or down. It then locks in place when you have stopped the pressure on the lift. No electric or extra tools/handles are used to operate the lift.

BEST ANSWER: The instructions for this system does not contain a template for the cutout as all machines are different. It states you should purchase an insert from the dealer you purchased your sewing machine from. I built a cabinet for my wife and placed the sewing machine on the table top and made the opening about a quarter inch larger then the machine all around it.Be sure to allow for the mounted electrical cord on the machine so it clears as the sewing machine comes up.

There is no cutout but you will need 6 screws to fix the mechanism to the cabinet, 4 in the top bracket and two in the lower. I shaped the lift top to match the hole in the cabinet top so that when the machine came to its highest position all was flush.

This lift fit our over 25 year old Horn sewing cabinet perfectly. It was very simple to install and didn't require any adjustments for our particular cabinet. Even though it didn't have any install instruction any DIY handyman can install it relatively quickly and easily. It works like a charm and my wife is completely satisfied.

Sewing machine lift
Absolutely love it! I grew up using a sewing machine held inside a wood cabinet. This lift is so much easier to use - just push down on sewing machine to store inside my Singer cabinet. My neighbor installed the lift, put brace on the bottom of lift (running between the back two legs), and attached a wood stained shelf to the top of lift. He did it in a couple of hours (drying time for stain). He told me he didn't read the install directions but he got it mounted perfectly! Great Job!

sewing machine lift
This was ordered as a replacement for a lift I purchased 12 years ago. The new unit arrived already fully assembled and ready to install. Directions were simple but complete. The unit fit into my cabinet perfectly. The only change I had to make was to drill new holes for my wood mounting pad on the top of the lift - not a real problem. The lift came already positioned for a 3/4 inch thick pad so there was no need to adjust the lift position.. I highly recommend it

A great surprise for my wife
I was looking to renovate an old sewing machine cabinet I had given my wife 45 years ago. It required for the sewing machine to be rotated up and locked into place. With some added supports to the cabinet and a refinishing of the exterior the lift could be installed. Both my wife and I were pleasantly surprised to find the mechanism to work "like magic!" It came calibrated exactly as I needed so my wife could sew at the mid position and change bobbins at the elevated one then with a slight push it would disappear out of sight. The first one I received was defective but Rockler responded so that the new one arrived two days later with a return shipping label. Great product and great service.

Replaced a nonfunctioning lift
I have a Horn sewing cabinet, and the lift was damaged during a move and would not move. I used this lift to replace the nonfunctioning one. I had to drill new holes as the holes on this lift did not match up with the holes for the original lift. It is great to be able to lower the sewing machine for storage or to use the entire table surface for other purposes or raise the sewing machine to use the free arm. The lift is easy to use and was easy to install. I'm a 69 year old female who is not afraid to use an electric drill.

Works great
Okay, so I'm a slow woodworker. I ordered this in Feb of 2012 and only just recently finished the sewing table for my wife (but before Christmas). The lift works great and was easy to adjust for the second level. Instructions could have been clearer but that's pretty much par for the course. Well worth the money.

When I was looking at sewing...
When I was looking at sewing cabinets, they were pricing in over 2,000$ for what I wanted. Looking at the brochures and the help of this item, I was able to produce a large sewing cabinet with a Ton of workspace, this lift, and other features for well under 500$ including wood, lift, other hardware, stain, and poly for final finish. It's held up durrably for at least 10 years now. When I injured my shoulder, I was still able to get my machine in place by simply pushing down on the top of the machine and letting the lift raise it for me. If you're making a sewing cabinet for yourself or someone else, this product is a MUST!

I am very impressed with this lift, at this price. I'm building a sewing cabinet for my wife, as I've found that any grade above 'cheap pressboard quality' is well over the $1,200 mark. I've been looking for a decent air lift, and most manufacturers don't seem to sell them direct, and the ones that were available are over $300 for the lift alone. I was unsure what I was getting, but expected quality from Rockler. It arrived this week - this is the same Horn brand airlift that is available elsewhere for $350+, and used in their $2,000 tables. I am thoroughly impressed at the quality and price.

I had a custom cabinet built for my serger and chose this lift for the price and the way it looked like it would go into the cabinet. My cabinet maker was extremely impressed with the quality of the lift and that it was German made. It went into the cabinet well and has plenty of depth adjustability for my serger. I am very pleased with the way it works.

I am very impressed with how well-made the lift is, and how smoothly it operates. The instructions are minimal, but the lift is so easy to install, adjust and use that they are not really needed.I would not have spent this much without actually trying this lift from any other source but Rockler. This is a great product and well-worth the price.

Wife loves them. I upgraded her serger table and a regular machine table. I had to move the lower stretcher and added a horizantal brace to attach the lower bracket. The instructions didn't fit this application but appeared to be plain and easy to follow. The lifts were also very easy to adjust for the correct height.

I bought the sewing machine lift...
I bought the sewing machine lift mechanism about 2 months ago to install on an office desk that I am converting into a sewing machine cabinet. I installed it last week after putting it off all this time. I am a novice woodworker and was concerned it would be too difficult to install and align. I had read a number of complaints about the fact that the lift doesn't bring enough installation instructions. I install it and adjusted it to fit my cabinet and Brother Innov-80 sewing machine with no problem. The instructions could not be simpler. The mechanism is heavy but even I a petite woman was able to move it. I did need to have someone hold it while I marked the holes and placed the screws. Even this could be done by one person alone, if you lay the cabinet on its back. It is a great product.

I ordered this through my local Rockler store and used the lift in an early 1950s sewing machine cabinet. The ease of installation and adjustment amazed me. We have a Bernina 730e and we can lower and raise the machine with little effort. This is a great product.

This was the finishing touch for my new sewing cabinet built by a wonderful cabinet maker. It is terrific and is very easy to adjust. I have a sensitive back and lifting the machine put absolutely no pressure on it. Thank you for providing such a fine product.

I purchased the lift and plans for my wife. The plans were modified to meet the need. The lift has worked every time and makes the cabinet that much better. My wife has been very happy with her sewing cabinet and has a few friends green because they can not purchase one like it.The cabinet is made of maple with the lift board framed in cherry. I inserted a tile in the right flip lid for use of an iron.

We had been trying to find a way to put my sewing machine head into my grandmother's old cabinet, which is solid wood and very nice. By using this lift mechanism, we can now do it. It works great...thank you so much!

Very nice lift mechanism. I'm using 2 in an antique buffet to lift a 40lb arcade control panel to the proper height. Had to tie them together with angle iron, but, with the easy height adjustments and the strong lifting power, the mechanism worked out great. Very smooth, very solid, and the lift force is perfect out of the box.
