Again, another product with which I am baffled by the reviews. I just don't see how you could possibly have issue with these, with their construction or installation. As for cost justification, these are a solid brass hinge that has been machined precisely, not stamped from thin and cheap sheet stock. To machine parts precisely takes time, time costs money, plain and simple. If you want a high quality hinge, this is your baby. If you want cheap, he big-box store is right down the road, be my guest! But when your lid is sloppy and the hinges fatigue in a few years, you'll see where cheap will get you! I have used these on several high-end keepsake boxes and even some humidors, and they are a great hinge! They handle heavy lids well and are plenty strong so as not to bend when holding a large, heavy lid open. Cheap, stamped hinges will often bend under these conditions. Well worth the cost. Unless you like to build poor quality pieces, in which case he big-box store may suit you better.

I too purchased the side rail hinge for a high-end commissioned box. These hinges are as near perfection as can be expected. Any experienced woodworker with the proper tools will have no trouble at all. You will need a router table and a 5/16" straight bit. Other than that it is a simple setup. Rout a 5/16" wide x 1/8" deep x 1 9/16" long grove, then raise the bit to 3/16" and deepen the grove at the hinge end outer edge of the box and lid to a point about 1/4" in. This will provide a relief for the hinge pivot. That simple, you will have a perfect fit just like in the picture. I would like to point out that with a little research on the web you will find very accurate illustrated and well written installation instructions for Side Rail Hinges.

Using these hinges, I've built 31 keepsake Commissioning Boxes for graduates of West Point, Annapolis, Coast Guard Academy, and am making a couple Air Force Academy boxes for this years Commissiioning, Throw in a few more boxes for other assorted universities. I am looking forward to opportunity for first Merchant Marine Academy box. I agree with Glen that the instructions are skimpy. But, once you get past that, and realize you need the chamfer or else need to leave the hinge proud so pin piviot point has room, you are good to go. Screws are long enough for purpose. Why the expense - because it is solid brass and it takes manufacturing time and effort for fit and finish. These are high quality solid brass hinges for heirloom projects. They are thick for a great look for your heirloom. If you want something less for your project, then buy a cheap hing and realize you are not making an heirloom. Design is straight forward. I have no problem seating. I use jigs and fences and stop blocks to get the right depth and length mortise. Routing a sample is always advisable. I am this morning placing order for 6 more for upcoming boxes on my list. I highly recommend this hinge for that special project.
