whats the best way to thread the wood shaft?
jim j
on Apr 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You do not thread the shaft. The collar is meant to be screwed onto the shaft, we had to carefully sand-down the wood-shaft to the point of being able to screw the brass firmly onto the wood. We also filled the threaded brass with a high quality wood glue, it oozed a bit, but we cleaned it up, and after 24 hours we had a completed, good looking and fully functional Cane. Hope this helps. (We used an upright adjustable belt type sander to reduce shaft size to make the brass collar fit.

I first sand the end down until I can just slip the handle on.Then I score the wood and apply a clear epoxy to the shaft. Inside the collar or ferrule, I will add a small amount of clear epoxy to the top of the wood and let it run down into the threads. Do not let the epoxy get onto the upper threads or you will not be ab;e to fasten the cane handle.

Could I use a 1" walnut dowel for the cane shaft?
Glenn C
on Jul 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, just adjust the length and decrease the width to fit inside the brass as the brass has an out side diameter of about one inch. Have made canes from the oak, walnut and cherry. Have received the highest compliments on the cherry

Yes, you can. You will have to reduce the size of one end for it to fit. The handle has an opening of about 7/8".

I'm 6 feet tall would it be recommended for me?
Darrell B
on Oct 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will work. The fact that your 6 feet tall doesn't matter on the brass cane head. A cane is measured with the user standing straight and his or her arm slightly bent at the elbow and a measurement it taken from the palm to the floor.

I have an existing cane, and want to change the handle. The brass collar that screws onto the eagle styled handle does not match the 'Brass Cane Hardware' I purchased. I need a brass piece that will screw into the eagle collar that can be affixed to the cane shaft. I assumed these canes used a common technology, but clearly they do not. The existing cane shaft has a ⅜" fine threaded rod that is threaded and glued into the wood shaft, and can not be removed. The obvious solution would be to find a brass fitting that screwed into the collar that attaches to the handle on one end, with a female receptacle on the other end, mating both handle and shaft together. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Joseph G
on Mar 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: A possible solution would be to cut the end with the screw attached to existing cane shaft then follow the directions precisely to add new handle if any length difference it might be made up on the bottom of cane. As I stated this is a possible solution. Good luck. John

Regency Brass Cane Handles
The Regency cane handle whish I order from Rockler, is a well mde handle, with good definition. I use the handles on dress canes I make for the gentleman of discerning tastes. I find they add value and distinction to the segmented canes I make from Maple, and Black Walnut. Maple And Black Walnut

Nice detail on the eagle head, no casting lines. Threads were pristine and without flash. The package arrived within four days of ordering. I'd ordered a number of things on the same day, but this beat their arrival by nearly a week! I hand carved the stick and added three coats of gloss black. I used the Oval Handle on a 130 year old Ebony Cane that had a leather handle that had become lost. I was able to mount the cane on my lathe and cut a tenon on the handle end. I was lucky the cane and handle were the same size and it looks like they were made for each other. High quality.

Guys!!! I took this Eagle head to [local home center], & it screwed onto the threaded end of a piece of 7/8 black waterpipe, like it was born there! Took a 4 ft length of that home, cut it down, sanded & sprayed it gloss black, popped a rubber cane tip on the other end, & now I have a generic looking Trojan Horse walking stick, For less than $25!

I hand carve very unique walking sticks and hiking staffs. I purchased two of Rockler's Brass cane heads and attached them to pieces of highly carved Teak Wood. They're beautiful, very fine quality, and added an very high touch of class to the pieces. Shipping was fast and after dealing with other companies for over 30 years, Rockler is now my choice for not only cane heads, but all my hardward needs.

I used the oval cane head...
I used the oval cane head because it screws to the cane at the bottom, but it also unscrews into two halves at the equator, so the enterprising stickmaker may hide goodies inside. (See my review under the Brass Cane Hardware to find out what I hid under the one pictured here.) The hardware works great and installs very easily. I glued the threaded collar on with epoxy as insurance against it working loose, since the cocobolo is too hard for the threads to engage it very well. I've road tested this hardware along with the screw-joints and brass tips on a 12,000 mile trip already, and it works great! In fact, I'm getting ready to start making more of these for friends!

Cane prep
I am going in for a knee replacement and wanted to have a cane ready for use. I turned the Cherry shaft on my lathe and finished it with a satin urethane. Great results, but (here's the but) the bushing that holds the head into place could be better affixed to the wood. A locking long bolt down the shaft or a wedge would make it stronger.

Looks great
I used solid walnut for my cane shaft. I don't have a lathe so after I cut a 1 1/2 inch square piece off a 2 by 8 board, I rounded it with a router, then used a benchtop sander to refine it. I waited until the cane head arrived to sand to the final size. After staining and polyurethane, I screwed the head onto the top of the shaft, cut to length, and added a cane tip. People who see it simply cannot believe I made it myself. I did buy the hardware set as well, but I didn't use it will probably return it, or keep it for a future cane. I'm sure the kit is fine, just not for this project.
