Overview

A precision ground cast iron base (2-1/8" W x 6-1/2" L) ensures smooth and accurate planing. Frog and base are cast as one piece to greatly reduce chatter and make planing more effective and enjoyable. The iron is made from 1/8" steel for edge retention superior to most other planes. Also features Norris-style adjustment with lateral lock. Adjustable mouth reduces tear out. Hone the iron before use to achieve exceptionally fine shavings.

Additional features:

  • Finely machined solid brass adjustment hardware
  • Plane iron is honed to an angle of 25° and is micro-adjustable to 30°
  • Limited lifetime warranty

I purchased this plane based on...

I purchased this plane based on recommendations found in various woodworking magazines. The magazines said that while this was an excellent plane for the price, it would require some tuning to prepare it for use.I had to true the sole, file the mouth adjustment to allow closer tolerance, and of course, sharpen the iron. When complete, this was an excellent investment! The 1/8" iron and approximately 2lb overall weight makes this plane a rock-solid performer.Don't let the pre-use adjustments dissuade you. It is a necessity for all but the most expensive of planes.Great job, Stanley. Keep 'em coming!

I agree with Mr. Christopher that this is a great value for the money. With any hand plane under $1,000.00, you can expect to have to do some tuning to get the very best results, and these new Sweetheart planes are no exception. The smaller amount of work required, compared to lower-priced planes, easily justifies the price for anyone who works with wood on a regular basis. My only serious gripe is that the throat adjustment does not allow the throat on the block planes to be closed to much less than 1/8", which is still ridiculously wide for cabinetmaking tasks, where a narrow opening is required to control tearout on difficult woods.Otherwise, all else being equal, I prefer the low angle block plane, which is the first I've seen with a lateral adjustment mechanism, and the first from Stanley with a blade made from a high-quality grade of tool steel.
