In this kit there is a threaded end on the barrel trimmer tool. How do I insert that into my drill press chuck without some type of adapter? Am I missing a piece or did I receive the wrong barrel trimmer tool? The threads on the barrel trimmer tool are 3/16", which are smaller than the included morse taper mandrel threads so I can not use it on my lathe. HELP!!!!

BEST ANSWER: This barrel trimmer is an older model that came out before the trimmers that you put in you drill.
When I got mine I made a handle for it but have since thrown that out and just use the trimmer as is in my drill.

Can you explain that answer a bit more? Or perhaps explain a work around now that the customer has a threaded drill bit. It doesn't seem very accurate or long term viable to keep chucking a threaded rod into a drill or drill press. Did you adhere a tube to the thread? That's the simplest work around I can think of... Thanks.

What's the purpose of the brass compression nut set and plastic gasket that is included? It is NOT pictured in the product photos, nor mentioned in any of the several pen turning videos linked here. It fits on the end of the Mandrel and seems it could be an alternative end stock adapter of something. It was in the kit in a separate baggy with 2 replacement plastic gaskets. Useful input or theories appreciated.

BEST ANSWER: I wondered the same thing and, so far, think that it is likely for 'shortening' the length of the mandrel for shorter projects (keychain, whistle, etc). It seems that if you put it on the mandrel first, then the appropriate bushings and material, it should be secure and allow some adjustment.

Good set
When I started turning I was not interested in pens. Saw this on sale so I thought I would try. It's a great way to get started on pens with the easy kits included.

Great beginner setup
Very nice starter set!
Gets you going with all the essentials!
When you consider the tools you get with this kit and their cost alone, this is a very good deal, if your just starting out and you’ve got nothing then you can’t beat this kit!
Combine this with a nice mini or midi large from Delta or Nova or Jet and a set of ticklers carbide turning tools and you will be turning out pens in no time
Pens are a great slump buster for those time when you need a simple easy project to keep your woodworking interesting

Pen Turning Beginner Set
Great beginners set. However I have a Mini Lathe and needed a MT1 Mandrel and this set comes with MT2 Mandrel "ONLY", so I had to spend additional funds on a MT1 Mandrel. How about giving the buyer the option of a MT1 or MT2 Mandrel.

Complete kit
Kit was good and complete. I bought because I was missing a lot of my pen tools after not having made any for a while.
the store was out of a lot of parts, so I had to buy this. I can still use everyting in it.

The perfect fit.
This was the perfect starter kit for me, complete and inexpensive. All you need is a little sandpaper and this kit sets you up to turn 3 complete pens and have the tooling to continue on. Plus, it's cheaper than buying the parts individually. They're not the best or worst parts, in typical "kit" fashion, but they've served me well through 15ish pens. My recommendation is to get a kit and start cranking out some pens...the holidays are coming soon.

Good way to start
Was able to turn my first pen with nice results, kit is very complete and easy to follow. The one thing that gave me trouble was the knurled nut was torqued down too tight and I could not get it off the mandrel initially.

Nice introduction and a ton of fun.
I purchased this starter kit roughly a month ago and it has been a perfect compliment to one of the funnest pieces of equipment in my garage/shop. I like that everything required to begin turning pens is included in the kit. Instead of three "gold" pens, I would have like maybe 1 chrome or nickel one for introductory variety. Not necessary though.
I would definitely recommend this to someone starting out that want to see/create relatively easy, smaller sized "finished" projects.

I'm impressed with the quality of the items in the kit. Having the bit, bushings, mandrel, and pen mill included has saved me a lot of irritation and money. I plan on buying more pen turning supplies from this company.

Perfect Starter Kit
Has everything that you need to get going! Great quality as well! Comes with a MT2 taper so if you have a MT1 like I do, you will have to purchase another mandrel but that will only set you back $15-25. Well worth the purchase!

Great for someone getting into pen turning
I got this kit about two weeks ago, and it comes with everything you need to get started. The reason I bought this kit is because I wasn't sure what I needed. I would recommended this to anyone starting to turn pens.

Great starter kit
I bought this kit when starting to make pens/pencils. It has all the components needed to make a 7mm pen. I am not disappointed with this kit.

Great little kit
This is a great little kit. After getting my lathe back from a friend who had borrowed it and getting the rust off and resharpening all the turning tools, my grandson (who had never used a lathe before) made two very professional-looking pens for his mother's birthday present. The mandrel would not mount properly in my lathe, so he jam-chucked it with the tailstock. Cut quality was acceptable and sandpaper did the rest. The Stick Fast CA glue included with the kit was used for the final finish.

This is a really good starter...
This is a really good starter kit.Other than creating a drill jig, an assembly gage for inserting the twist mechanism, and a handle (optional) for the pen mill there was very little that was needed to get started.IMPORTANT COMMENT - Ensure that when you open the kit that the dimple end of the mandrel is NOT installed in the #2MT end. You will need the dimple end to engage your live center of your lathe tailstock. Mine was installed backwards (no dimple on tailstock side). After two days of turning with a rigged up adapter piece for my live center I discovered this. I unscrewed the spindel, turned it over, and screwed it back in. Works MUCH better now.

I bought my first Rockler pen...
I bought my first Rockler pen kit when I was on a school trip to Johnson's Workbench in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I turned a pen at the wood fair and was hooked. I have made some laminated pen blanks and they turned out pretty nice. I have made many pens and now I'm looking for a lathe. I highly recommend getting this kit.

This is one of the easiest...
This is one of the easiest and greatest products I could have ordered. Me and my sons have turned about 20 pens and they have sold like hot cakes. My sons have started their own business turning pens and they are making more than I do as a chef per hour So it is a great and easy way to make a few bucks.

Nice Set
It is a nice starter set, but I had to get a different mandrel as my lathe has a MT#1.

Tailstock question
Worked well, however I did ruin the fixed Center pin on my tail stock. Does it require the use of a bearing type Center pin?
