BEST ANSWER: Yes. This is a very good primer on basic caning. I caned a couple dozen chairs before purchasing the book. It reinforced what I had been doing and I picked up numerous pointers to help get a better result. I recommend the book.

I have holes but no wedge for a spline to be inserted. If there is a wedge it is minute. Is that possible? Brand new to restoring a cane seat. Thank you. Cathy Bailey

Caners Handbook
This was my first caner project, repairing my daughter’s old oak chair. I purchased the book along with the supplies. The book gave very clear directions. The chair had oak splines verses the reed spline, I purchased two different reed spline sizes because the groove size had some variation; measuring a wood routed groove with wear to 1/32” with a rule leaves room for interpretation. The alignment of the woven rattan cane was a little challenge because the existing chair side grooves were at slightly different angles; but with some patients I did achieve a good alignment. If you have never done caning I would recommend the book. I am looking forward to try some of the other caning approaches. The chair went home without a picture of the final product. I should have done a before and after. I also took the time to refurbish the chairs finish, it made it look great, I left the caning natural because I like the contrast with the oak finish.

Very helpful
I have a little experience restoring chair bottoms but not a lot of experience with rush. I've learned a lot, found the illustrations detailed and the text to be very clear. I would recommend especially for beginning or intermediate caners.
