$150 for plywood. $1,000 for lumber. I would check out the minimum for a lumber supplier if you need solid wood. Maple, poplar, oak...all 3x the cost at the big stores. You could always go euro frameless and edgeband!

What is the difference between the basic and deluxe Murphy bed options?
A shopper
on May 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I believe the difference is in the locking mechanism and bed feet. With the standard kit, you create the legs out of wood. It becomes a feature on the face of the cabinet while the bed is in that stored position. With the deluxe kit, there are metal legs that retract in the storage position. I purchased the standard.

Tom S

Is there any way to see the instructions before purchase? I would like to know where the wall mount points, how high off the ground, are they all back wall fastened or are any side walls needed? I am framing the walls where this would be installed and I'd like to get the studs and any backing in before the drywall goes up.

How high does the bed rest off of the ground? What is the leg height? I am wondering if I can build some sort of seating on the front that will use the vertical Murphy bed as a back rest but will act as additional support when the bed is folded down.

Vertical Mount Murphy Bed Hardware

Vertical Mount Deluxe Murphy Bed Hardware
BEST ANSWER: The leg is about 7 inches so that will be your ground clearance. I'm in the process of doing exactly what you described so I modified the plans. Is you're using 4x8 boards, you can add about 8 inches to the vertical cabinet height and adjust your plans accordingly. This will give you about 15 inches of clearance for the bench height. If you use removable cushions for the bench, that should provide adequate seating height.

Thank you Kate. My husband wanted to do the same. My questions is "I understand adjusting the height of the cabinet but do the legs then reach the ground when the bed is down? It seems something has to be done there. Do you have instructions or pictures to assist him (although he should be OK since he is an architect. The 'legs' are 7" high on the one with wooden legs. With a mattress that puts the surface of the bed at around 23" off the ground. You would need to raise it to at least 17" length legs, putting the mattress at 33" off the ground. My current regular mattress is 30" off the ground and is comfortable for me, but I am 6'2" tall. You maybe could go to a 15" seating surface and put some firm foam cushions on the seats while the bed is up. That is all going to depend on if you have the ceiling clearance to raise the bed that much.
Good luck!

BEST ANSWER: If you refer to the picture of the Vertical Mount Murphy Bed in the closed position you will notice the four decorative elements in the upper panels. Two of these fold out/down to become legs that the bed rests on.
The Vertical Mount Deluxe bed does not require these legs. As you can see in the image, it utilizes a fold down leg which pivots around the mattress when in the closed position.

Is there any sort of safety lock with bed in up AND down positions to keep a child from activating? Considering this for a precocious autistic toddler.
s m
on Oct 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I've built two of these so far. They certainly lock in the up position, but not in the down; it's the weight of the mattress that keeps it down. For a toddler, it would not pose a risk in my opinion; although it's not too heavy for any adult to lift back into the up position, it would not really be possible for a toddler. In the up position, the release mechanisms are too high for your little one to reach.

In the "up" position, there are two latches that hold the bed in that position. The latches are released (and well out of reach of young children) by raising two levers that, effectively become the front "legs" of the bed in the down position.
In the "down position, the bed has no latches but does require some effort from an adult to lift back into place (aided by two pistons).

I would recomend a slide bolt installed along the top edge while in the closed position, you also may be able to install a slide bolt between the headboard and the wall to slide into the vertical side frame when in the down position. You will have to creative with placement to achieve the best results. Hope this helps.

In the up position, takes two hands to operate the two catches. When down, none, only the weight of unit plus bedding holds it open. One could put some kind of lock at the top. Not sure what could be done in down position. Be creative? Depends on looks versus safety, right.
Good luck.

My basement ceiling is 86 inches from the floor. I would like to build the queen size vertical bed but the dimensions for the cabinet list it as 87 1/8 inches. Is it possible to make it shorter?
Jay B
on Oct 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You might be able to take an inch off the top since it has a little over an inch in depth. That area is also the strength of the top of the box so think about reinforcing that area since that keeps the structure from going out of square, then it will not close. You could also take a little of the bottom but then you will have to shorten the legs that are part of the front design or the bed will not be level. Also remember you may be tipping the whole cabinet up if you move it in flat and then tip up and need a little extra headroom. I was very happy with our bed just follow the instructions they were great.

I am fairly sure that you can make the bed cabinet lower , it just won't be 'normal height. Remember to make the legs shorter also. Take the dimensions off the bottom. Do not mess with the internal dimensions of the unit. I had tall customers and they had me make the whole thing taller, so just be careful where you take what you need off.

My pleasure to help. Yes you can in the when instructions tell you to add two 3 inch pieces to the top and f bed which are really only used as nailers to connect to wall make these two pieces 1 1/8 and you will be fine. And if necessary just add a nail inside of the Murphy bed later. And please ask me anything else if your unsure.

Any way to adapt to a 3/4 width bed? i.e. a 48 inch wide mattress? (overnight guest bed in a confined space but for an adult who needs a smudge more space than a kid.)

I have an opening in the wall that is 18" deep but only 62 5/8" wide. Since a queen mattress is 60" wide, is it possible to build the cabinet narrower than the 63 7/8" to accommodate the size of the opening?

on Nov 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Leif, I've built two of these and have very happy customers. I understand your issue, and it's PROBABLY ok to narrow it a bit. The bed is constructed with a little extra room all around to that the bed can be raised without having to remove all the sheets and blankets. Narrowing it by 1 1/4" will likely mean the bedding will have to be removed from the sides of the bed; just folding the sides of the bedspread up on top of the mattress will likely allow for the bed to fit OK into the up position. It's going to be a tighter fit than the bed is designed for, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. In the picture here, you see the bedspread is draped over the sides of the mattress, just fold those sides up on top of the mattress, then close the bed, should work just fine. Hope this helps. IM sure the bed and mechanism would still work fine if you changed the dimension of the cabinet and frame. The only question I would have would be would the queen size mattress fit the frame. It's only an inch and a quarter narrower you might consider shopping around to see if there are variances in mattresses sizes to accommodate the change

It does not seem possible, there is very little extra room in the mattress box and if you reduced the thickness of the materials it would not have the strength to handle the pressure of the two 250lb struts. If you found a slightly smaller sized mattress (one inch) you could do it.

I suppose you might be able to trim a little over a 1/2 inch on both sides. However, there is a very explicit warning to the builder not to modify the plans. I would make every effort to maintain the structural integrity of the bed if you attempt to change anything.

I wouldn't cut down on the width,as you need to use the 3/4" plywood for strength for the lift supports. You may have have a mattress special made, then adjust the width.

Is it possible to make the legs longer so the bed is higher up from the ground?

BEST ANSWER: Call the Create-A-Bed phone number on the front of instructions to ensure you make all the appropriate changes. They are very accessible and willing to take the time to help.
I raised my Create-A-Bed Standard Queen by 3-1/2 inches to match the height of the standard bed I was replacing. Aaron at Create-A-Bed graciously went through each page of the yellow and blue instructions that would be affected by the change in height. Basically, I added the height change to the length of the two vertical cabinet boards, and to all dimensions on the vertical cabinet boards that are measured from the bottom up. Again, you should call Create-A-Bed.
For my 3-1/2" height increase, Aaron explained that the two standard individual legs would not be strong enough to support the foot of the bed. We discussed using a piano hinge and a solid board the same width as the two face panels (like a shelf). With Aaron’s help, I decided to use the board and mount it with the hinges that came in the kit. I used 4 of the kit hinges (got 2 more), mounted as instructed (2 additional holes in face panels), and attached the board to all four hinges. This requires taking extra care to ensure each hinge is mounted square and at the exact dimensions on the board so the hinges would work in unison.

Everything is possible. You just need to adjust all the calculations for the rest of the bed/closet. I have actually made mine without the surrounding closet. So yes, it is possible, but make sure you calculate everything right so you dont get in trouble later.

The only way to do that is to move all the hardware up that you are increasing the legs by. If you add two inches to the legs then you need to raise the hardware two inches and increase the total height of the unit two inches

on Jun 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would say that a 16 inch thick mattress would not work. The plans call for the side panels to be 16 inches wide. the mattress sits in a box that has a 3/4 in thick bottom and a cross member that is 3/4 inches thick combined 1.5 inches subtracts from the depth of the pocket where the mattress would fit. I believe you could adjust the dimensions to make it work, but it would deviate from the plans so you would do it at your own risk. I use auto cad- light and often change plans but am very certain the plans would work.

Hector,
It would be possible, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really a great carpenter! Using a 16" mattress would mean changing many of the dimensions on the plans, as well as revising the required materials list. It would also help if you think well in 3D, because you'll also need to move mounting holes, etc. Additionally, I'm not sure if your 16" mattress would fall within the weight limits for the hardware, particularly the hydraulic lifts.
Hope this is of help to you.

I believe you would have to modify the depth of the cabinet, and move the hardware forward, but I think possible. You may want to study the instructions some. Just be aware since you would be modifying the stock plans, you would be responsible for determining placement of hardware on your own. I don't think this would be a major deal. The mechanisms are not that complex.

Hi Dennis,
I built the bed myself and the only thing you need to keep in mind is the weight of the whole construction. Size does not matter (obviously the instructions in the manual will not be accurate for other sizes) but if it is bigger it will heavier and it will be harder to fold away.
Best regards,
Peter

I built a queen size so I am not certain. I would guess you could adjust, but build the mattress box slightly wider than the mattress to make it easier to change sheets. The pin makes it a little harder because the sheets catch on them.

BEST ANSWER: So the bed pivots on its axis at the head board and rotates down. So if you take a stick of sorts and cut it the length of your bed, hold one end against the wall about a foot up off of the floor and just pivot it up and down you'll get an idea of the travel. The bed is at it highest point when it is stored as you pull it down the end actually moves lower. Hope this helps.

The bed is only 6 inches off the floor. I installed this bed in a 9x9 room that also has a ceiling fan and I didn't have any trouble clearing the fan. The fan is mounted close to the ceiling and the bed pivots close to the wall so by the time it reaches the fan it's lower than the fan.

Scott A
on Feb 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Scott. I've built two of these and just about to start construction on a third one. Your question is a valid one!! There is quite a bit of stress on the side pieces where the hinges and lifting piston are located. There is virtually no stress on the front of the cabinet (the part that faces the floor when the bed is lowered. I assume you are trying to go for a somewhat "rustic" look to the piece as you are considering using reclaimed lumber. My suggestion would be to use plywood as recommended in the plans, then just face the ply with your reclaimed lumber. If possible, just mill the lumber down to 1/4" or less. The advantage to doing it this way would be structural strength and stability for the entire mechanism. The plywood provides structural strength for the hinges and piston, and eliminates seasonal wood movement so the unit functions perfectly in any conditions related to humidity and wood movement. The added weight of 1/4" material to the face and the sides would not create a problem. Hope this helps. Alan in Austin, TX

BEST ANSWER: Probably not, the only problem is if the mattress is too light; the bed won't stay down if the mattress is too light. Having it too heavy wouldn't really be a problem. Just take a little more effort to lift it back up, but wouldn't create any problems with the mechanism.

Ooh, we have a futon cloth mattress on a standard sized bed and it works OK. But that memory stuff is pretty heavy??? Does it have to be 8"?? Just suggesting here.

I would think the memory foam mattress would sink down when the bed is closed.. There are just two straps to hold Rhee mattress in place.

Bed thickness- with so many options for beds these days, pillow top, memory foam, cooling gel, the beds are thicker than a plan mattress. I purchased the basic full size kit. My question is how thick of a mattress is allowed so the bed can close properly?

Jeff, the specs say 12" maximum, and with the pillow-top queen we have it was slightly more. We do need to slide the mattress up towards the head of the bed for the bed to close without hitting the header board, but it works fine. The only issue we have had with the mattress, is the head end hitting a wall plug behind the bed. We have a utility strip to plug the bed spots into and a lamp. This is easily remedied by using a wall plug with a low profile. If you don't use a wall outlet behind the bed, no worries. It did rip the end of the mattress until we realized that the mattress was hitting the plug.
It won't close with anything on the mattress, like mattress pad, sheets, blankets, etc.

Hi Jeff, the mattress that I picked for mine was the same thickness as the height of the side board. I would think that you would have a little flexibility, as there is a little space between the wall and the mattress anyway. Our bed is for causal use, so we don't have to worry too much about getting it too close. Anyway I would think that the maximum thickness would be the same as the width of the vertical side rail, less a little bit.

BEST ANSWER: It may not be just the mattress depth that you have to worry about. You should check with Rockler to see if the lifting mechanism will work with a shallower depth. It seems to be designed to accommodate the original depth. The main rod is attached centered 6" from the wall. You could move this closer but then you might not have clearance to lift the bed and clear the wall at the head. I actually altered the height because I didn't have the clearance underneath a soffit but I didn't have any limitations on depth.

It would probably be okay but with the lighter mattress, the bedframe may have a tendency to lift slightly off the ground. The locking mechanism which doubles as the legs may not remain perpendicular to the frame and would collapse. I would build a small bookshelf to add weight and act as additional leg support.

BEST ANSWER: There is no adjustment, using a lighter mattress would make lifting easier, that said however, it's not difficult to raise or lower it. Had someone asking a while back if their toddler might try and lower/raise it and get hurt. It takes more strength than a 2-3 year old could muster, but it doesn't take a strong person to make it work either. Hope this helps. AW

I just want to put the bed in a regular closet (no cabinet). The closet opening is large enough for the bed to be stored in and come down. Will this kit allow me to do this?
s f
on Sep 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The answer is both yes and no, let me explain. The mechanism that hinges the bed, and the "pistons" that help raise and lower it, require very specific measurements for location and spacing to work correctly. The pictures shown include side cabinets for storage which are certainly optional. The instructions and the video that come with this set don't include these side cabinets. Making the bed fit into a closet is certainly possible, and without these side cabinets, it will work just fine. If you're thinking of making the bed and trying to attach the hinges and other hardware to the sides of the closet, this would be VERY difficult. Just build it as instructed, with the sides, "headboard", and top, then slide this entire assembly into the closet would be the way to do it. I've built several of these (never tried to put one in a closet though), and they work very well. I just bought another kit to make one for our guest room, and will be building it w/o the side "bookcases". This would be the way to go for your application too. Hope this helps. AW

No, you can really use any matress; it's the weight that needs to be checked. If your existing bed is either much heavier or much lighter than a regular inner-spring mattress, then the mechanism for lifting and lowering the bed will not work perfectly. If your mattress is too light, you'll need to add some weight to the bed-frame so the bed stays down when lowered, this is easy. If your bed is way heavier, then it's going to be difficult to raise it back up. The type of bed doesn't matter, it's the size and especially the weight that is important. Hope this helps.

For the Full size deluxe Murphy bed hardware kit, are we able to raise the height of the bed when it is folded down? We would like about a total of 26 inches including the mattress off the ground.
Jessie B.
on Jan 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Should be no problem. When folded down ours is at 21" high and the bottom of the frame is 6.5" above floor. Three important things must be done. 1) On the two large vertical "frame members" mount hardware as described AND THEN add 5" more to the length and that's your new bottom cut off line. 2) the two "legs" that fold out also will need 5" added, but mount hardware from top of leg as described. Keep in mind you might want to make the "fake" legs the same length. 3) Molding height on bottom front may need to be increased. This new height should still leave room between bed frame and ceiling. Hope this helps..........Laird

You would have to significantly alter the plans in order to do so. With an Ikea Morgedal mattress, mine is 16 inches from the top of the mattress to the floor. You would have to increase the height of the cabinet, the length of the legs, and re-calculate where to put the pivot hardware and pistons. You'd also have to add a piece of wood at the bottom of the cabinet to cover the extra inches (10 or so, depending on your mattress) between the mattress box and the floor. I am also skeptical that the hardware used to keep the legs vertical would do well with that much leg length, but it may be fine. So technically, if you are very good at calculating these kinds of plan alterations, yes. But it would change the dimensions of the lumber you need to purchase (specifially, the upgrights on each side of the cabinet and that extra piece you wold need at the bottom) and the cut-out layouts provided by the plans. Good luck.

This is a response to the question about whether the Murphy bed can be raised to the height of 26 inches. The cabinet would need to be modified and made deeper than the plans call for. The Murphy bed built to the plans can be raised to about 22 inches because the cabinet is 16 inches deep and the legs are 7 inches tall when extended. If the cabinet depth was increased at least 4 inches ( but preferably 5inches) then the mattress could be raised off the surface it lies on to make its height 26 inches.
Just be aware that this entails changing the layout of the the components on the material as described in the instructions and may require additional material and adds 4-5 inches of additional projection into the space when the bed is down.
Best of luck.

Murphy Bed ready for Mrs Murphy's visit!
Quite a project!
Just announced to our friend, Mrs Murphy, that her bed is almost ready for her visit!
We moved from a home that had room to sleep at least 6-8 overnight guests to one with a single guest room that needed to be used as a sewing room too, so this unit will make the most use of our limited space.
Admittedly, we shopped around, comparing the cost of commercially built ones to a few different "kits." Not only was this one the most practical, but it seemed that the hardware provided was better than others.
Included plans were useful but since Don is a cabinetmaker by trade, he did make some adjustments.
Ex, he didn't care for the 4 handles in most illustrations and added 2 half circle shelves to give the leg blocks a reason for being there. Since the shelves are small, I put non-breakable figures on them... in case we forget to remove them before opening the bed! (The shelves rest on the floor when unit is open)
In addition, he pre-finished EVERYTHING, right down to the final coat, then assembled the unit according to the plans. The cherry stain matches a pair of dressers he made over 50 years ago that are in the room (& contain sewing supplies!).
The molding on the front hides the joining of the 2 front panels and has 2 "V" grooves to conceal the finishing nails used to apply it.
He gave me side shelf units to store some of my sewing books and knick-knacks and the lower cupboards for linens that will be used on the bed.
Our 2 daughters and a son-in-law came over for a work-party to help install everything last Monday and it came together quickly and without a hitch!
On Tuesday, Don picked up a board and fabricated the crown molding. Yesterday, he installed it for the finishing touch!
Don cautions that 3/4" lumber is no longer 3/4". He had no problems on that matter, but it might be good to warn less experienced woodworkers on that point.
NOW .. we go mattress shopping!

I originally intended to build the bed into a bookcase, but opted to make just the bed. It was fairly easy to make even with limited experience. My main limitation was my skill on the table saw and a couple botched measurements. Other than that it went well and the be is certainly what was advertised. It works beautifully.

love this bed!
We have a cabin in northern WI that was built by my husband using old barn wood and other recycled materials. For the past 30 years, we have been sleeping on a screened porch that doubled as a gathering spot for cocktails and evening talks. Needless to say, the bed has taken up a lot of space. We decided on a Murphy bed last winter and found this design. We used the exact materials recommended and measured twice before cutting once. We hauled the cut wood up north and had it assembled and installed in 2 short days. We also installed some extra screening on the bottom and lower back panel to mouse proof it. We absolutely love this bed. It's easy to raise and lower and it almost doubles the usable porch space. We couldn't match the barn wood, so we used birch plywood for the contrast. This is one of our better DIY projects.

Best value Murphy bed
We looked at a lot of different options and products to create a Murphy bed that would fit in the space we had set aside for it. This mounting hardware was a great option and the best price. The directions were easy to follow and resulted in a very smooth operating bed. Although it said not to modify, we did - paying special attention to the weight of our building material and the original dimensions in the directions. We love it!

This hardware kit is excellent. The instructions are thorough and easy to follow and the DVD provides good visual directions. The only issue I encountered was the plan is based on 3/4" cabinet plywood which is not available in our local area. So I had to re-dimension the plan. The completed project looks great and everything fit together perfectly.

Great murphy bed
Hardware is substantial. create a bed instructions great. It works as advertised. do to ceiling height restrictions we had to assemble with the "verticals" in the upright position. we used an automotive floor jack to hold the cabinet front/bed frame in position to put the pins in for the hinges. It all worked out well. We assembled one side with headboard the headboard was supported with twine from the top of the one vertical to the far end of the headboard using temp screws for anchoring the twine then jacked up the cabinet front. and slid onto one pin. then slid the other vertical into place adjusting the jack as needed, and attached the headboard to the other vertical. the cabinet head piece was suspended from above floor joists for holding its weight while screwing it to the verticals. It came out well.

I got my "Bed in a Box" and contrary to popular belief, guys do read instructions. The lumber list was complete, but you have to read through not to overlook the solid wood pieces. All the hardware was correct, like the bevels on the hinge plates. I especially like the beefy feel of the T-bolts on high stress areas. Thanks, Rockler

done at last
intimidating at first but tutorial was a great help. unit is heavy and requires a helper especially if you are a 73 year old whimpy grandmother bed works great and has been used several times now.

Works well
Instructions were easy to follow and the project went together smoothly. The mechanism works smoothly and with less effort than expected. Very well balanced. We have received many complements on the project and would recommend this product.

Create a Bed Queen Size Murphy Bed
I was impressed by the accuracy of the plans of the Murphy Bed and the hardware I purchased through Rockler. The measurements were spot on and in proper sequence. The DvD was very useful. Typical of me I improvised and altered the plan so I could install a 19" TV in the facing. I called Create A Bed three times for technical support. All three times they answered my inquiries to my satisfaction. They even assisted with some additional hardware. Excellent service! My granddaugher, McKenna, was the first to try it out! That's why I dd it!

In view of the other reviews,...
In view of the other reviews, I just want to recommend that the design include a face frame on the side pieces to support them so that they do not bow out. If a face frame is not used with the 3/4" ywood sides, they will bow about 1/8"each, leaving a visibly uneven gap on each side when closed. It is visible, but not too bad. My unit is all maple with an antiqued finish to match some existing 50 year old dressers. The finish included dyes, stains and shellac. Ones side has drawers and a pull-out shelf! the other has a slant front desk.

I built two Murphy Beds using...
I built two Murphy Beds using this hardware for our summer home. Exceptional product and design. I am about to build a third as a wedding gift for my niece. Understand the basic bed is straightforward and within the reach of any woodworker with basic skills, that can follow directions, has access to a sufficient sized space to handle sheet lumber (4'x8), and has access to the required tools. For more skilled woodworkers the basic plan can be enhanced with side cabinets, trim, lighting, to make a beautiful piece of custom furniture. I researched this carefully before building the first two about five years ago, and we (and particularly our guests) have been delighted with the results.

This product is excellent. As others...
This product is excellent. Keep the DVD close at hand, watch it repeatedly and refer to it. Here is what they don't tell you. You should add the following to their list before you start: A flat unobstructed work surface, space, A long straight edge cutting guide (for cutting plywood with a circular saw) and a matching saw plate guide. A smooth cutting saw blade. Forstner drill bits are a must. Plenty of time is a must as you can't rush this, If you are under the gun for time forget it. You need some technical ability, if you can't screw in a lightbulb forget it. You need a mechanical pencil with a very fine point for marking cuts, Don't use a chaulk line to make your cuts {line is to thick} all cuts must be perfect. Miter box is a plus for square accurate cuts on the inner bed frame. All cuts must be perfectly square and true. Assembling components must be square and true. The product is great just make sure you have plenty of time and space to do a nice job.

The Vertical Bed Hardware Queen -...
The Vertical Bed Hardware Queen - Rockler Item # 89632 was excellent all the way around. The hardware is top quality and the detailed step-by-step plans, including a well done DVD video, helped eliminate any guesswork during the fabrication of the bed. I bought a new table saw to use in this project, and even factoring in the price of the saw, I estimate I saved $6,000 to $8,000 over what I would have paid for a factory-sourced Murphy bed of lessor quality.

Over the years I have built...
Over the years I have built 3 Murphy beds. The instructions are very detailed and accurate. I have to echo others when they say to read and follow the instructions carefully. I like the Murphy bed because when you need the bed, it folds down easily because of the gas tubes. But, when you don't need it and can use the floor space, it disappears into the wall. I built closets on both sides of the bed so the entire wall is the same depth.

I bought this kit last summer, and the kit works EXACTLY as advertised. Just a word of warning - read the directions through fully BEFORE starting this project and make sure you're following every step in order. If you do you will have a murphy bed and not a "Murphy's law" project you can be proud of.

What has 14 drawers, 6 lights, 6 bookshelves, 2 desks, 1 bed and a telephone? Our son moved out to college and rather than keep an unused bedroom, we opted for a guest/exercise/library room. I had no trouble with the bed hardware or light kits. I do wish the lights recessed fully into the openings. Would recommend this to any woodworker, even novice.

I've just completed construction and installation. While I can't speak for durability, everything from the plans with cutting recommendations to the video with very clear directions to the quality of the hardware was top notch with but one exception: one of the male pivots was slightly off 90 degrees to the plate. I made one call to the company and a correct replacement was mailed out immediately. One tip: be sure to buy quality plywood and pay attention to the grain pattern during your cutting exercise. I had to apply veneer to poor quality ply making the job much more difficult than it should have been.

Great solution for our computer office/ guest room. Plans adapt to most any decorating style and instructions are easy to follow using the video. Very pleased with the results. I actually purchased two sets of hardware because we have two guest rooms and really enjoy the extra space. The customer service was amazing. I had to put the project aside for a few weeks and misplaced a bag of hardware - the Create-a-Bed customer service department sent a replacement free of charge.... not even a handling charge. Amazing!!

Not a project for the weak...
Not a project for the weak at heart or the impatient. I am a handi man and have designed and built many of my own projects and it took me some time to get it all together but when completed it is a beautiful addition to the furniture in my house and a comfortable queen size bed for when my children come to visit. Solid hardware and I used all 3/4" oak plywood and solid oak moldings. I stained it with my own mixing of different color stains to match some of my other furniture and it came out great. Not a job for the novice but if the novice wants to try and has a lot of patience and time by reading the instruction booklet and watching the dvd provided it can be accomplished.

I made the bed out of 3/4 birch plywood and veneered the face panel out of Madrone Burl and the rest of the bed in Figured Sepele and caped the edge's with solid sapele. Thank you for this Great Design, Me and the Wife could not be happier.

I ordered this product Monday morning and it was on my kitchen table Thursday afternoon. It was a lot of hard work to build the bed, but the DVD was excellent and using the plans and the DVD we got it done in no time. We added shelves to one side and a cabinet for my ironing board on the other. It has turned my guest room into a sewing craft room. I was so pleased that when the bed is down the room still looks warm and cozy and the bed looks really inviting.I really appreciate both the product and the service by Rockler.

Added a room in the basement, a place to go and watch a bit of sports. I ordered the vertical murphy bed as I needed the extra bed when family came for a visit, then after they were gone I wanted my hockey room back. The bed was excellent. I installed it with a display cabinet on each side to display some hockey collections I had, now when my kids come they argue over who gets the room. Follow the instructions, I strongly recomend this to anyone looking for extra space. 5 stars for sure.

Good clear directions. I was in...
Good clear directions. I was in hurry to get this in a usable state so I put it together without a headboard or face panel, figuring I would work on them later. The lack of a headboard made it tougher to keep the sides straight and parallel (it would have helped correct a slight bow in one side) which made it more difficult to get the cylinder on. Skipping the face panel I installed a couple 5" wide pine boards to the bottom to hold the legs as the directions call for. This worked but without the face panel the bed was not heavy enough to counterbalance the cylinders and it wanted to fly back up against the wall. So I screwed a couple pieces of rough plywood into the the bottom of the bed (where the face panel will be). The extra weight holds it down just fine.I want to figure out another way to do the legs ultimately as I just don't particularly care for the having 2-4 little pieces sitting on top of the face panel.

I built the Vertical Mount Murphy Bed for a friend of mind for a small computer/bedroom. The plans & video was very clear & simple. I used Baltic Birch plywood. Instead of storage cabinets on the side I put them on the top, due to the size of the room. Look's great. I do agree with another viewer that price is a litte to high. I have purchased Rockler products for years and have never been disapointed with service or items. When people ask me for special items etc. I refer them to your company.

Our office/guest room was cluttered and...
Our office/guest room was cluttered and uninviting. We had A large computer table, small dresser and a queen bed in a small room. I did not want to give up the queen bed, but I need more storage space (no basements in Florida) and a computer desk. Therefore are only option was Murphy bed. I looked into buying what I wanted and it would have cost $6000-$8000. I then quickly decided to go with this Create-A-Bed from Rockler. The plans are east to follow. We were able to complete this over a 4 day weekend (working 10 hr days). One piece of advice, plan out your trip to the lumber stores. The Create a Bed comes with a pattern for each of the 8 sheets of ¾' plywood ($50 each) you will need to buy. Going to the lumber store when it is slow (weekday evenings or Friday night) you can get them to make all or most of the cuts on the 4' x 8' sheets plywood. They have the large table saw which makes it easy to make the long cuts, it saves you time and it makes it easier when loading into your vehicle. The bed came out better than expected and company that has slept on it said it is very comfortable. I also made a small book case along the left hand side of the bed and built an L-shaped computer desk with stock cabinets I bought from [home center]. The Murphy bed alone cost me nearly $600 in materials and the total project cost me approximately $1400. The Murphy bed office completely changed the look and feel of the room. No longer is it cramped and cluttered, it is open and inviting.
