BIG

Alvie Posted November 10, 2014
I just purchased this jig last week. It arrived on Friday, and Saturday night I broke it out and started my first board.

First thought was - This thing is BIG. Read those dimensions again! The finished board will be close to 2 feet in length and 7 1/2" wide. I knew this would be large, but it didn't click until I had everything cut and ready to drill. I'm not complaining, mind you. I just want you to know this is a BIG gameboard.

I made this first board out of ash - probably something I won't do again because I think I already have to replace the drill bit due to the hardness of my selection. Next time, I'm going to use pine or maybe oak - I just didn't have anything else on hand.

One thing to do before using this kit - Tighten the drill bit. The bit came loose after my 4th or 5th hole (again, possibly because I used ash) and when I went to put it back together, the whole bit came apart. Spring/washer/screws everywhere. Just make sure you tighten everything out of the box and check it throughout the project.

The plexiglass templates are very thick and will last for many projects. The self-centering bit is very sharp (don't forget to tighten) and is pretty much like any self-centering/countersink bit - you can remove/sharpen/replace if you want. The alignment studs fit snugly which is nice. I found if you twist them once you set them they hold very well.

Last thing, make sure you have a vacuum nozzle close to your work. I have a shop vac as my dust collection and put a flat nozzle on and kept it about 2"-3" from where I was drilling. Drill slowly in and pull out slowly and you should be able to work at a constant pace.

I'm making this for my father-in-law who has vision issues yet enjoys beating me at Cribbage. I'm looking forward to playing with him at Christmas!

Saw on!
