Ive had my shark about 10 months, and I have shifted my hobbies to almost 100% working with the CNC, The only thing I hated was the noise and dust!! ....WOW.....With this water cooled spindle the noise is that of a electric toothbrush, and because the router doesn't blow down on the work table and blows the dust all over before i can vacuum it up......IT IS AWESOME!!!!!! I MEAN WHY DID I PUT UP WITH ALL THAT NOISE FOR SOOOOOOO LONG!!!!!

Woodworking Experience:
quiet and smooth running
The spindle runs so quietly that you could forget that it is on if it wasn't cutting. I haven't used it too much yet, I am just learning the software for my CNC. So far it is a real winner!

2HP Water-Cooled Spindle for CNC Shark HD
Very easy to set up and very quiet. I'm still a novice CNC user but I had it installed and working in less than an hour. The control unit comes pre-wired so it was pretty much plug and play. It's so quiet I can run it at any time of day without worrying about disturbing my neighbors.

Water cooled spindle
I had no experience with using one of these before. Only regular routers.
They don't provide any clear instructions for a beginner whatsoever. There are a ton of different setups you can modify, but that's for advanced users. Attaching the water hoses to the spindle was quite a chore and gave me a few blisters in the process. Once their on, they're on good though!
Get your connections to the control box right, set up your spindle control box and your water pump fixed in a bucket and your basically ready to go. Run your G code, turn your spindle on and dial up your RPM to the desired speed. Working great so far! Super quiet! The only noise I get is from the router bits cutting the wood.

Woodworking Experience:
OK for the $$$, but lacking some features of most dedicated spindles
Beware that this spindle can only use up to 1/4" bits. This leaves you out of some of the nicer bit options (big spoilboard bits, big v-bits etc). Also know that the shark series of CNCs can't control the on/off or speed of the spindle. The spindle is very quiet which is a big plus, but it also presents a significant safety risk since the CNC doesn't shut the bit off after a milling operation. The controller has a very loud fan and a ton of buttons with no documentation. This is clearly a Chinese product.

Amazing how quiet the spindle runs
Just venturing into CNC, but when it was mentioned that the spindle runs quieter than a router, i jumped on it, knowing how loud a router runs. And 'they' were not lying!

Good horsepower also like how quiet it is but the only hangup I feel is it only goes up to a quarter inch collar and not half-inch

For the quietness, wear and tear on router, plus very little heat build up on the long jobs.

Can the water cooled spindle be controlled through the Shark HD control unit or does it run independently?

CNC Shark HD4 Extended Bed with 2HP Water-Cooled Spindle
CNC Shark HD4 Extended Bed with 2HP Water-Cooled Spindle
BEST ANSWER: hi Shanon. independently. first you turn on the spindle from its control box. then you start your job from the shark controller. keep in mind - do not plug the spindle into the back of the CNC control box. plug it into your power strip. The CNC controller will not know whether your spindle is running or not. so if you load a job and the spindle is not running....your router bit will just get jammed into your wood. you will make this mistake at least twice :)
What is the outside diameter of the spindle?
Frank on Aug 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: 3-1/2" diameter.
Is there a way to put a 1/2" collet on this spindle?
Dave G on Nov 20, 2015
Where would the best place to mount the Power Inverter for the Water-Cooled Spindle for the CNC Shark HD3 Extended Bed setup?
Michael H on Mar 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I put it at the corner of my table. Make sure that they get you cables and hoses of appropriate length for the extended bed. They ship everything 'normal' and while it may technically reach on an extended bed you can't really do any cable management. I had to send my inverter back to NWA for modification. Aside from the inconvenience it was not a problem.
Interface Kit/Cable. Is there really one? I don't see it in the pictures, I can't find it any any documentation and I can't find a list of parts anywhere. I also don't think there is any integrations between the spindle and the Shark like turning it on or off. Is there actually an interface kit/cable?
JARRED C on Jun 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I believe that this is referring to the 4-pin cable that connects the inverter to the spindle.
is there a perferred additive to keep the spindle water clean?
Patrick M on May 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't use any additives. I have the water in a 5 gallon paint bucket and lid that i bought at Lowes. I then cut a small hole in the top, just large enough for the supply and return tubes and the power cord.
How do you install or change bits on the spindle? The 1/4" Collet does not snap into the Tightening Nut and there are no wrenches provided with the spindle.
BladesNBarrels on Aug 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The collets on mine do snap into the nut when changing from the 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch. They feel loose but won’t fall out if the numbers is turned upside down. As for wrenches I just bought a couple of wrenches and keep them next to the machine.
will this spindle start and stop with the program?
David P on Apr 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hello David, No the spindle must be started and stopped by the operator with the included control panel . I would recommend this spindle if you are running a long program, as it stays nice and cool.
I had bought the “cnc shark routing system” about 4 years ago. Will this spindle work with that. The spindle product info says it works with cnc shark “HD1-4”. The cnc I have is called “cnc shark” without the HD suffix. Is this spindle compatible?
Sampath O on Nov 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: As far as I know it should determining factor is the spindle diameter with the Shark bracket.
Next Wave should be able to give a definitive answer.
What size diameter is the spindle?
jarrett j on Nov 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It can use both 1/4 and 1/8 inch router bits.
what are the rpm range for the spindle?
Dylan H on Aug 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Sorry not sure of total range but we have used extensively at well over 40,000 rpm. Packaged with spindle control box it is very easy to control rpm speeds. Have found spindle to be very strong and powerful! Also with water cooling it does run a lot more quiet that regular routers.
What is an approx. RPM FOR USING 1/4" 2 flute bit on wood?
Jeff K on Jun 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Depending on the wood I generally run between 16000 to 20000 rpm for a 1/4" bit
Can the spindle be run with out the water pump?
Floyd H on Feb 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Not for long. Spindle would quickly over heat. Long story short, NO.
Will the spindle fit on the standard CNC Shark designed for the palm router?
Gary L on Jan 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Seems like I had to buy special clamps for it, but they weren't that much, just don't tighten down too much.
I am looking at buying this spindle, but there are limited reviews and not much info on the internet. Is there a promotional video or something with more pictures of the set up, use, and sound? I'm a visual person. Thanks.
josh b on Aug 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mr. Josh regarding your questions the router is extremely quiet works very well the router bit is what makes all the noise, I'm very happy with it. But I feel there is two down Falls with the router , first one is you can't use a half inch router bit, Second one is when you're using it for a CNC machine you have to start your program then pause it then wait for the router controller to start up then turn it on then wait for the router to get up to speed then hit continue on your CnC machine if you want to automatically shut off when your program is done, or use a power cord plug in my rotor and my water pump into that and then plug it into my controller for my CNC. I have a Cnc shark.
Can the er11 collet system be changed and upgraded to an er32?
Chris on Nov 7, 2019
Does the control box on this need to be programed for use? If so is the better documentation than what came with the spindle?
Floyd H on Feb 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My control box came programmed from Next Wave. I shipped the control box back to Next Wave, they changed the length of the cable to a length I requested, they are very accommodating, a pleasure to work with.
What size are the hoses and fittings?
Tom A on Mar 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure. My guess is maybe 3/16. They are included with the spindle.
