4th Axis for CNC Shark

Take your CNC creations to a whole new dimension with a 4th Axis for your CNC Shark!
Item #

The long-awaited CNC Shark 4th Axis gives you the ability to create precisely turned spindles or columns with intricate carvings and designs that wrap around the circumference of your work. The 4th Axis easily bolts to your existing bed and rotates with the help of its own dedicated servomotor, providing the cutter with access to all sides of your project. It can be mounted parallel with the bed, or at an angle to maximize length capacity. Machined from solid aluminum stock, the CNC Shark 4th Axis is built to last, and comes complete with a Nova Precision Midi 4-Jaw Chuck, which firmly grips both round and square stock.

(1) Nova Precision Midi 1" 8-TPI Direct Thread Chuck
(1) Set of 50mm/2'' Jaws
(1) Safe Lock™ Woodworm Screw

I've heard that it will work on the CNC Piranha XL as the bed is big enough to bolt it down. Is this true?

BEST ANSWER: Yes and no. The machine is capable of engraving just about anything into any surface (provided you have correct bits). If you are doing small engraving in just one spot i think it would work well. If you plan on doing complicated engravings over a large area, and since a baseball bat is round, you would also need a 4th axis attachment, and all the bells and whistles that go with it. So to do a bat, plan to invest an additional $1000 on top of the cost of the machine. Hope this helped answer your question.
I don't see my question.. ? What is min - max in diameter will this turn along with length ?
Oletater S on Jul 9, 2017
How fast can the 4th axis spin? Is it a suitable substitute for a lathe such as making Pool cues?
Brian R on Feb 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Stepper motors are not made to turn continuously at a rapid RPM rate. They will burn up. However, rapid RPM's are not needed for the roughing out of the shape for pool cues. You will just need to do a lot of hand sanding.
What diameter's min-max will this 4th axis work on ?
Oletater S on Jul 8, 2017
does this come with software?
Jeremy B on Mar 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you already have a Shark, then you already have the software. It simply doesn't show on-screen. When you register the 4th axis you will see additional rotary options appear. There are special post-processors to record your .TAP files for the A-axis; but you can download those for free from their website.
This item is seems to be always temporarily oversold. How long did you actually have to wait for delivery?
A C on Jun 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm only guessing, but I think it was less than 3 weeks. My extended bed shark didn't arrive for until 4 weeks later.
what is the working area?
Ken L on Sep 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It depends entirely on the size of the bed on which it is installed and the distance from the spindles to the table surface. You can optimize length by installing diagonally on your bed. You can optimize width by using stand-offs to mount the spindle supports to the bed.
I was under the impression that that there was a fourth axis board already included in my shark HD so why do I need another board?
tim m on Nov 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Your current controller contains boards for the x, y and z axis and a slot on the motherboard to install a 4th board.

The controller board is required for the 4th axis kit and is available as item number 50629.
Will this machine cut designs into wood?
Candy on Sep 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. 4th axis is only another axis. You can do any material on the 4th axis that you can without the 4th axis
Do I need the vcarve pro8.5 to run the machine ?
martin r on Jul 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, but the ability to visualize in 3D rotation is very helpful. I use Aspire 8. The secret to the A-axis rests in the post processor, not in the design program. If you can visualize the 3D flat presentation as it will look as a spindle then that's all you need. All the zeroing and setup is done in machine controller (Shark 2.1 or whatever)
Dose this have the software? How much does it cost?
Lynn B on Apr 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You will need to upgrade your VCarve Desktop software to VCarve Pro. his can be done on the Vectric website for $349.00. The Pro version will give you access to wrapping, which is the function that supports the 4th axis.
Can you replicate rifle stocks with this CNC set up?
Brian D on Jun 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From my experience no. When I tried it the wood blank needed was to big to fit between the cnc bed and the plastic router housing. There were also limitations in the software. The cnc can turn a blank but then you need to program separately all the cutouts and build jigs to hold the stock during this process. I tried a stock for a 338 and it was to big. Maybe a smaller caliber stock would work. Hope this helps
Does anyone know it's height when sitting on the table? I'm designing a base cabinet for the machine and need to know how deep of a drawer I need to store the 4th axis accessory.
John W on Dec 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Highest point of the axis device is 4.25". If mounted directly to bed that is what you should use.
I mounted everything onto a base so it is adjustable (between head and tail stock) and is easier to place and mount to the be. The base is 3/4" plywood.
With V-carve can i import 3d files like rhino files? Can i only import vector / flat images?
danny d on May 5, 2017

Bruce M on Feb 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Bigger is always better.
What are the dimensions for the footprint on this? I need to know if I have room in my shop for this.
GreenDesign on May 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The overall dimensions of the CNC Shark HD4 are: 36-1/4''W x 36''L x 24-1/2''H
what else do I need to operate this?
Don on Jul 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Along with the 4th axis you will need the 4th Axis Control Board, the control panel software and a BIG dose of patience. This item is temporarily oversold and according to their website requires 7-10 days for delivery. I ordered the 4th axis beginning of March, 2017 and am still waiting on delivery. No one can tell me when it might actually be delivered, so be prepared for a wait.
