Save time and money by building your own Traditional or Plantation Shutters using our unfinished Basswood Shutter Slats! Available in three louver widths and two lengths. All stock comes ready to paint, stain, or clear coat. Ideal for fixed or movable louvered traditional or plantation style shutters. Basswood is a stringy hardwood. To prevent your drill bit from getting bogged down when drilling through basswood, be sure to go slow enough for your drill bit to effectively clear wood chips.

Great stock for shutters.
I’m very pleased with these preformed slats.

I used the 3-1/2” ones for my shutters.

The jigs make it easy to drill the pivot holes. Minimal sanding is needed, which I do before and after priming.

I used these for rectangular and curved shutters. For a semicircular shutter, I used the narrow angle Rockler jig to make my slats. They end up costing about $2 a piece for my shutters.

I didn’t have any warped ones in the 20 pieces I received and used before, and the 60 I recently got are straight as well.
8 shutters destined for my son’s house. A great gift for your family.
Slats used for rectangular and semicircular shutters. The semicircle is 53-1/2” in diameter.

Nicely crafter and well priced
I decided to buy these pre-formed shutter slats rather than router the shape myself. I think it's well worth the extra money. These are pre-sanded and ready to cut.

This is the easiest way to go when making the shutters. Milling these slats would be hughly time consuming. These were used with Doug fir and lightly stained with a golden pecan stain and turned out well.

Have to span three windows mulled together. Use two shutters?
FrankB on Jun 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: With a wider center light, I have gone with two singles over the two side units to the mullion then double swing for the center section, hinged off the two side shutters. thus you can open the center unit by folding back the two half width units. For a larger 3 window unit with all three the same width, I made 4 equal width units and it folds back like a double bi-fold door. In either case, I place a small pvc quarter sized support under the hinged stiles (1/4 and 3/4) on the stool to support the cantilevered double shutters.
Can the wood be used for exterior applications? I am building a cabana by my pool and the shutters will be exposed to weather.
A shopper on Jun 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Although basswood is not pressure treated for outdoor use it can be treated for outdoor use like any other wood. It also can be stained, sealed and finished with outdoor products (i.e. spar varnish or outdoor paint.)
What tools do I need to build my own shutters ?
Steve on Nov 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Starting from 5/4 rough lumber, a jointer is needed to get one side and one edge flat. Then use table saw to cut to rough width and thickness and a planer to get to final width and thickness. Instead of planer, use very good quality blade on table saw to cut final dimension after the rough dimension has been cut.
For the tapered slats, I was disappointed with the chatter from using a router with a cutter for this profile. I finally built a jig that holds the blank slat in place on the table saw fence and then use the table saw to cut a couple of bevels on each of the four parts of the slat. Final sanding on a belt sander resulted in a good slat profile.
There are several methods for joining the frame. I prefer pocket hole joints such as from Kreg.

A radial arm saw is handy, but a table saw or a circular saw with appropriate guides. Other tools such as power drills are required.

Good Luck
Ok so I have already complained about the stupid sticker .. I even called rockler back in January to complain and ask they please find a better way ... maybe just put the stupid sticker on the ones going to Ca since they seem to be the ones that need reminding that inhaling sawdust can cause cancer ... but aside all that ... has ANYONE found an easy way to remove these things? I spent an hour today removing stickers from the 125 slats I had cut! From the white warning to the white or yellow stock sticker ... my thumb will be sore for days! Really ... has anyone found an easy way?

Ones going to California!
linda l on Jul 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Have Rockler first ship them to Gavin Newsom. Have him remove them and ship them back to you.
Do these come longer than 58"?
Hamertime on Jul 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: no, you could make your own with their router bit but I would expect they would sag anyway.
Is all basswood linden? I am looking for 1/4 " linden
Bettye P on Apr 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is my understanding that all basswood comes from the family of Linden trees. I hope this helps.
I'm building a Plantation shutter for a bedroom window, but I'm trying to get the slats to match existing shutters in the same room. My slats measure 3.5 wide and 5/16 in the center. The center thickness can vary, but what is the thickness where the slat tapers down to the radius on your product?
onthegulf on Jan 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The slats from Rockler match that pretty close. They are right at 5/16 inch thick in the center and taper out to 3/16 - 1/4 inch at the edges (not counting the roundover) depending on where you measure. You could just buy one slat from Rockler, take it home, then compare their's with yours. I have made shutters in my home on 7 windows. Still have three to go (large ones). Rockler's shutter jigs and supplies work great. Good luck.
how many louvers would I need for a 58" X 58" window (inside dimensions)?
Pat S on Jul 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: just use the design wizard.
