Beautiful Finish
I used this to coat a walnut dining room table. It coated nicely and smoothed out great. The amber color added a richness that I was hoping for.

I've exchange the satin for the gloss, but I'm very pleased with the finish results after applying four coats of behlen rockhard table top gloss finish, I would highly recommend this product for any table top projects. Thank you. Ronald Hall

Awesome varnish
I have been using this varnish for several years now, and I use it exclusively on all table tops for indoor tables, and any surface that will likely have something wet set on. It withstands moisture better than any varnish I have tried.

Very hard, smooth finish. Resists just about everything. Doesn't yellow. The best!

The explanation in the description of what sets this apart from other finishes was exactly what I was looking for. A harder than typical finish for a table top. Thanks

What do you cut Behlen Table Top varnish with for the first coat(s)? Also is the gloss super glossy or a nice mellow gloss?
Novice on Dec 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: YOur need to understand that Behlen has changed the formulation from it's orginal version of the varnish. The original was a phenolic varnish that required the reducer to thin the varnish. The varnish is very glossy and very hard to rub out. The newer version of the varnish in a satin finish is more of a mineral spirits based finish. I believe that they still want you to use their reducer, but I read somewhere that you could use a combination of 50% paint thinner and 50% naphtha which is equivalent to their reducer. This varnish (the newer formula) is very thick with solids. To get it to flow properly, you may need to thin all coats. It is also very hard to brush this stuff. While the finish is very durable, it is a pain to apply. You should look on the Behlen website for their thinning recommendations and consider using the naptha/mineral spirits to clean out your brushes.
Can this product be applied over a latex painted table top?
RDB19116 on Feb 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Ought to be able to, as long as the top is sanded first
Once cured, is it heat resistant?
spike on Feb 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it is i had no problems with hot bowls or dishes.
Is this product as scratch resistant as General Finishes Arm-R-Seal?
A shopper on Apr 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I've never used that general Finishes product but I can tell you this is the stuff recommended to me to build bar top round tables. The results were phenomenal. This stuff is very thick and if you don't have level surfaces you are going to be sorry. It pools and drips, I wish i would have taped off the undersides of my round tops, there was a lot of drip that hardened beneath the table top. All in all I can say this is a great product, follow the directions and you are set.
Will this product change the color of the wood? I want to keep the natural look and some I've tried have changed the wood to a golden look.
Jade E on Sep 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have used this only on some pine, which was 200 years old. It did produce a light golden look. Maybe use a wood sealer made by minwax might help. The Behlen is a excellent product. If you use a sealer let it set for several weeks. John
Is this oil or water based? (table top varnish)
Dave L on Oct 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Definitely an oil finish.
Can this be used over a lacquer finish ?
Dave L on Oct 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Suggest contacting Behlen. I believe it would be ok especially if the lacquer finish is old.
Of course the lacquer will need sanding
Heat? How does it handle the heat that bleeds through placemats or carries through trivets?
kjco99 on Mar 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: i don't know how it handled the heat as I had no feedback from customer, sorry. I will comment that it is clear and does not have much "warmth" to it or Amber tint. Don't count on it to enhance your wood color.
will this product fill voids between rocks as much as a half INCH DEEP?
roger d on Dec 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. This is hard, yet very thin finish. I think you're looking for a 2 part epoxy often used for bar tops. Look for "bar top epoxy" on Google or wherever. I just finished a slower floor with black rocks and a 2 part epoxy. Looks great. Buy twice as much as you think you need and stir THOROUGHLY before pouring the epoxy. Good luck.
will this product withstand hot plates being placed on tables?

BEST ANSWER: Try a sampler on piece unimportant wood. I doubt it so wouldn't try
Can this product be sprayed wit hvlp paint gun?
A shopper on May 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can. I used it to spray the top of a desk I built.
What stain to use prior to using this finish?
Daniel on Feb 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: i used a water based - actually, I think it was Minwax brand. I used the finish on my restaurant tables. they get wiped many, many times every day, and the product has held up beautifualy,
I am making a countertop out of solid hardwood finished flooring and wanted to use this as a kind of resin. I can apply it directly on top of finished wood right? And in terms of strength, how is it?
Ramy M on Dec 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have used this product to refinish a hardwood table top. It can be applied directly to the sanded & cleaned wood. Needs 2-3 coats for best result, but gives a great finish and it's hard. So far, no problems with scratches or scuffing
Is this finish approved for restaurant table applications?
Cory H on Dec 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Cannot answer the applicability question relative to a commercial application. I have used it on my own home breakfast table.
relatively new to finishing so forgive my ignorance .i have some heart pine that I've conditioned, minwax gel stained and clear shellacked would i use this over the shellac or instead of shellac?
phil F on Sep 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Depends if the shellac is "dewaxed". I believe the wax in the shellac would (possibly) interfere with proper adhesion. I'd go without the shellac altogether. Use several light coats and build a very tough finish. Great stuff for table tops.
I'm finishing a walnut desk using the Sam Maloof oil/poly finish (note: I am NOT using the oil/wax part 2...only the oil/poly). I want to protect at least the top of the desk with a hard satin top coat. Although I do not object to using poly in the finish, I do not want to use poly buildup as a top coat since I don't like the look or the UV susceptibility, I'm considering this Rockhard Table Top Varnish. Will it adhere well to the Maloof oil/poly? Any other options I should consider? Thanks. Mike
MIke N on Sep 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: That question is best answered by the folks at the manufacturer since they should better know the compatibility. It would seem that poly on poly should work and my experience with the Rockhard is good, it would be worth a try. As an aside, i found my can with about 2 oz. left in it the other day and wondered if I could still use it, well it was ROCKHard in the can and i could not soften it with mineral spirits, as I hoped i would be able to to add to a small piece I was doing. Good luck..
Can this product be applied over tung oil?
Kevin M on Jun 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Don't know, but doubt it unless stripped and sanded
Can this be applied over wood that is already finished with polyurethane?
Mike F on Mar 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My opinion is that is can be applied over other polyurethane finishes, as long as it is sanded properly between coats and the existing polyurethane has not been polished with a silicone based polish such as pledge. I am really not a fan of this varnish. It is extremely hard to apply without brush marks and it does not look as good as other polyurethane finishes. I personally will not use this product again.
