easier than biscuits
dowels are quicker than using my biscuit joiner, which I used almost exclusively before buying this jig. Before I go completely over to doweling, though, I will evaluate their effectiveness over time.

3/8 dowel jig
Man this thing is sweet I've build a lot of stuff using this Jig. I clamp it with a Kraig hand held vise clamp works great just remember it could break. Its been dropped a lot but I have a pad for it to fall on. Cant say enough, Quick and easy

Be sure to use a clamp
I need to use a clamp to make sure the guide is steady, and sometimes that nearly impossible for placing a dowel in the face of a piece. I usually just bring those to the drill press. The guide isn't tight enough and allows the bit to wobble a bit, but knowing that you can watch the surface during glue up and make sure they mate flat across the joint.

It works if you want something faster than setting up a drill press.
It works; the only problem is no matter how you clamp it, it has a tendency to move; I suspect any jig of this type will have the same issue.
I find the drill press to be the best bet when doweling
