If you're looking for a router motor to keep in a dedicated router table or CNC machine, look no further than the PM-P254. It features a soft-start motor that prevents sudden power surges and is easy on your nerves when you hit the on switch. Five speeds with a variable speed range from 10,000 to 22,000 RPM let you dial in the speed for a large variety of bit sizes, and the motor maintains constant speed under load. The variable speed dial is dust-sealed for reliability and premium NSK shaft bearings ensure maximum lifespan and minimal run out. The 15A motor is sized to fit most 4-1/4'' router lifts or CNC router mounts, and additional location pins make it compatible with many 3.25 HP router bases.

Good price, good quality powerful router motor
I used this for some raised panel doors, using a 3 1/2” panel bit at reasonably slow speed. It performed beautifully! My old router just didn’t have the power to do the big stuff.

Good price point, good value
I had been wanting a dedicated motor for my router table for quite some time, but really didn't like the idea of spending a ton of money on a PC motor. Then I got a new lift and decided to pull the trigger on a dedicated motor. Since the lift is designed for a PC or equivalent, I felt like I didn't have much choice. Then I got an email from Rockler saying the P254 was on sale for $199... talk about timing! I know it's not a PC, but it's got all the bells and whistles, so I thought I'd give it a shot. It's a very nice piece and so far, has taken all I've thrown at it. If it stands up time-wise, I'm a happy camper

Very quiet compared to my P/C routers. Mounted easily in a MasterLift. I've been using it all day cutting dados, so far so good.

Very good, but could be even better with a small change.
This is by far one of the best routers for a router table. The soft start is perfect, the motor is very quiet and has all the power one could ask for. There is, however, a serious problem with knowing the actual motor speed. The speed dial shows only two speeds, the highest and the lowest. And these are not in any way legible when mounted in the router table. I had to use a white ink marker to write numbers (1 to 8) on the side dial so I could better guess what the speed is set for. Even then, it is only a guess. Various diameter router bits need to be operated at different speeds for safety reasons. Portamate needs to find a fix for this problem.

Ok but?
The motor is plenty powerful but man it is loud. After using it about 5 times the speed knob fell off and even turning the dial up and down does not change the speed of the motor. Guess I have to run every bit at high RPM. Would not buy again.

Just return it after 3 weeks of purchase. The motor goes up and down the speed and the power is not strong enough to cut the think acrylic 1/8".

Look elsewhere!
Considerable amount of time trying to mount this router into a Rocker-supplied router table lift

Surprised to find this router not supported by the router lift manufacturer

Anyway, finally was able to load router, turned it on, didn’t work.

Awaiting a replacement now, it’s been 5 days

This router is much lighter than the old Portomate

I fear that means less quality

AVOID!!

Which router table bases are compatible with this motor? Also, does it fit any other plunge bases for above-the-table work?
Tim S on Feb 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I went directly to the Portamate site and asked them, they said for certain that the PM-P254 will fit the Porter Cable 75361 base which is the fixed base for the Porter Cable 7518 and 7519. I'm not sure about any other bases that it fits.
Will this router fit in a Kreg precision router lift unit? It looks like it would.

Wesley W on Oct 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I haven't measured it, but it does fit perfectly in the pro lift.

BEST ANSWER: Yes it does. It is what I use in my prolift
Is Portamate PM-P254 Router Motor compatible with Porter Cable 690 routers ?
taylor b on Oct 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Mine is mounted in a router lift, so I can't take it out to try, but remember that the Portamate has about twice the HP of the Porta Cable 690, so it is probably larger. It is also good to know that the Portamate speed dial is numbered 1-8 (I think), so it doesn't show actual rpm, which you have to guess at. If you are going to be using larger bits, this is something to consider. Overall, it is a powerful machine with a soft start that doesn't ever shake the table and always runs smoothly throughout the cut. It was designed to be used in a router lift.
