Great but don't put in Sun!
I've been using this (spraying) for years. Recently I made 3 nice humidors and decided to roll them out on a nice sunny day to install the hinges. They had been sitting for a couple days in my shop. Soon as the hit the sun, bubbles started forming (think water blisters). I had to strip and just now refinishing. I found out they don't completely dry for days, so don't put in direct sunlight unless you want to start over.

Great for guitar touch ups too!
Back in the 1950's they were gluing pick-guards down onto the bare wood surface on the guitar soundboards (tops), unfortunately overtime this resulted in cracks in that area due to the shrinkage of the pick-guard material and underlying stress on the top. I removed the pick-guard and used Bulls Eye shellac to seal and build the area of the bare wood and eventually replaced the pick-guard after also repairing the cracks and this shellac worked great for a few minor touch-ups around the sound hole. Great stuff, still plenty for future projects and my 1957 Gibson acoustic guitar plays better than ever.

The problem with online ordering...
Zinzer Shellac has a shelf life of 3 years. Each can is labeled with a production number that includes date of creation. So far, so good.

To my dismay, the can sent to me has already used half of its shelf life. So, I either use it or loose it... which will probably be the case for some of the can, as I use this product on small projects every once in a while.

What is the cut level of the clear shellac?
carl on Mar 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: According to Rust-O-Leum / Zinsser, Bulls Eye Shellac (clear & amber) is a 3 lb cut.
Would it give a matte finish over water based paint on walls?
A shopper on Sep 5, 2015
can I use this on bamboo to protect? and how often do I use it.?
A shopper on Apr 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This would depend on what your project is. A piece of furniture or small box would take a few coats.
If the project is a cutting board or something that can get wet, then I would butcher block oil.
why did my atomic red ceder turn milky on the second coat ?
chipper on Dec 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Did you add water or use a wet brush (was he the brush with water)? Shellac dissolves in alcohol, water makes it cloudy. Wash the brush with alcohol, or just let it dry wrapped in paper so it keeps it's form. Let it sit in the next batch of shellac for a short while and it becomes soft again. Anyway you may be able to fix the cloudy coat by brushing on straight alcohol (denatured), that will dissolve the finish and may remove the cloudiness.
is this product food safe for a countertop?
alice h on Dec 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Once it thoroughly dries...about a week to be sure all of the alcohol solvent is gone...it would be food safe. In fact...if you've ever eaten the shiny chocolate candies like malted milk balls or chocolate covered raisins, you've eaten shellac, so you won't contaminate your food if it touches the countertop. The problem would really be that it is not a very durable coating for countertop application. It will eventually start to chip and bubble and look blotchy.
When using denatured alcohol to thin the shellac, what is the ratio of DA to shellac?
Mary J on May 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I would thin to a 2 lb. cut (2 parts denatured alcohol, 5 parts shellac). This would be a good starting point.
Can you wash this in dishwater without taking the finish off?
Bill T on Apr 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Shellac can handle small amounts of warm soapy water, but I would avoid putting any shellac or varnish for that matter into a dishwasher. The long lasting heat and humidity will cause the wood fibers to swell and cause the finish to fail.
Can it be used for outside furniture?
Nancy W on Mar 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No it's not good at all as an outdoor finish.
Oil based finish or Varnish
Can shellac be applied with spray gun?
Friedhelm P on Apr 1, 2017

Is the Bull’s Eye shellac good indefinitely?
Janet R on Jun 4, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Shelf life for the Shellac is approx. 3 years, the Zinssers Sealcoat may last up to 5 years.
I painted a wooden box with craft paint. Can I use this to seal it? Does its’ smell last?
Mara W on Feb 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi, only if you used an oil base paint. Otherwise the paint will dissolve and mix with the shellac. Also, the smell will take a few days to go away
What is the ideal weather temperature for use of this product?
Brenda S on Oct 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: In my experience with shellacs, the lowest temp to achieve quick-drying is 75 F. Given the humidity of your region, this has an effect on drying time- this is not to say you won't get excellent results with applying
it when it's cooler, it'll just flow better onto your material when it's warm.
Has anyone used this alone on pine? How does it work?
Joshua on Feb 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is a great sealer. Several coats are used. It leaves pine shiney with a slight amber color when used alone.
I used a gloss polyurethane on some rosewood, and the finish is till tacky after three days. Is the use of shellac over this an option to seal it all up?
The Optimist on Oct 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, that is a very similar use that I had. I applied a thick coat of dark walnut stain over gold paint to give a bronze look. The stain did not dry after 3 days. I brushed on the shellac and the surface was dry to the touch in 2 hours.
Can I use this shillac over painted wood?
Pat W on Jul 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: if you rough up the surface with sandpaper you can, but that's not really its intended purpose. It's primarily used as a sealer on bare wood or mdf before you paint.
Is this shellac food grade? Can I use it on a wood rolling pin that I will use on food?
Jonna F on Jul 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I don't think shellac (or any film building finish for that matter) is suited for a rolling pin. I'd leave it unfinished, or at most rub it down with some mineral oil. That can be repeated as needed, and is perfectly food save.
can I use this kind of shellac to hardener ballet slippers ?
sonia s on Jun 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Dewaxed shellac is pretty much the same no matter where you get it, the two main differences are color and the amount of alcohol into which it is dissolved - the alcohol evaporates away, leaving the pure shellac behind, so I assume this would need to be cut with multiple layers. As I understand it, dance wear stores sell shellac for this purpose. I would contact the Dancewear Center in Kirkland, Washington, and ask for Patrice or Marv. Ballet slippers are their primary business.
Can I use shellac to attach photographs to slate?
A shopper on Jun 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: i wouldn't do it without testing first. seems like you might need to call a orofessional art framer, they know of better adhesives.
