Classic Ice Box Plan
Classic Ice Box Plan

Recapture an important part of history by building a traditional styled Ice Box. The Ice Box may be modified to serve as a storage cabinet for small appliances, electronic units, kitchen supplies, bathroom goods or any special purpose.

This project is appropriate for intermediate woodworkers. Construction methods used include tongue and groove joinery and doweling. Cabinet features basic frame and panel and face frame design. Decorative elements include cove molding and router details. A router and other common workshop tools are needed for construction. Dimensions for finished Ice Box are: 47-1/4" High x 44" Wide x 22" Deep.

Primary building materials required are hardwood plywood and cove molding. To complement a traditional appearance, authentically styled reproductions of Ice Box hardware should be installed. We recommend using the Classic Icebox Hardware kit (#98625, sold separately).

Ice box is great !!
i bought the plans to give my 81 year old father something to do.
the plans are good but not perfect ,, a little ingenuity and cleverness are needed . the project did turn out better than expected , it does take time and a little trial and error with the finishes , well worth it ... once it is done

Eager to get started.
Plan to make 3. #1 will be a pie safe with storage for my daughters new house. #2 will be fitted with drawers for my son's bedroom. #3 will be a liquor cabinet with lift top to reveal ice bucket tray and be donated for auction to Richmond, VA Scottish Rite's Childhood Language Center.

Woodworking Experience:
Beginner
Difficult At Best
I recently completed building this Classic Ice Box. It turned out beautiful as I have been told on many occasions. However, completing this project with the project plans was not an easy task. Even though all the necessary information to build this ice box is included in the plans they are NOT easy to follow or to understand. I would say my woodworking experience is probably on the intermediate level and it was difficult for me. If you are a beginner and/or don't have a shop full of tools I would not recommend this project for you.

Not worth the $10 I spent for it
I was expecting a raised panel plan.

In case the hardware would not match and I have to order solid brass hardware. In the meantime I will make this just to see if I can do it and have it look like the original.

Can this ice box (when built), be used as an ICE BOX? Or is it for some other purpose?
Chris H on Nov 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is designed more as furniture. With some investigating on ice boxes you might be able to convert it too an actual Ice box
I purchased the classic ice box plan. Doesn’t the plan come with full sized templates for the curved pieces? I only see the scaled down versions in the plan
Ken C on Jan 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: we took the correct length (size) board and used a flexible guide on each corner , and moved it up untill it looked correct , then traced a line and cut the piece out on a bandsaw
we agree the plans could be a little better for the curve pattern
