Although its attractive price might suggest an entry level machine, the CNC Piranha Fx® Base Model is every bit as capable as its CNC Shark® cousins and it even includes a convenient touch-screen interface! Its compact 12'' x 18'' table makes it perfect for smaller-scale projects like carvings, plaques, ornamental boxes and precision parts machined from wood, soft metals, or plastics, all at a fraction of the price of a full-sized CNC. It is fully compatible with the optional Fx accessory modules (sold separately). With its 3D carving capability, including a 3D models library, you can carve expensive corbels, or cut intricate inlays and engravings. The CNC Piranha Fx® Base Model has such incredible accuracy that you can engrave custom circuit boards with it. In addition, the entire machine can easily fit on one end of your bench. Design your project with the included VCarve Desktop V9.5 Design software on a PC computer with USB 2.0 port or higher (computer not included). Then save your project directly to a USB flash drive, plug it into the Pendant, select your file, and hit the run button. By using the flash drive, your computer won't be subjected to a dusty shop environment. Put the power of the Piranha to work for you today!

Package includes a Dust Boot and Touch Plate for easy zeroing of the Z-axis!

Touch Plate quickly and easily establishes ''Z Zero'' for incredibly accurate depth-of-cut. Dust Boot helps contain waste material when attached to your dust collection system.

Good Entry Level CNC
No stranger to "making" (laser cutting, 3d-Printing) and software, but new to CNC, I found the Fx to be a reasonable starting point; the bed seems sturdy, the shafts solid and rigid. The sides and base, interestingly, are just CNC'd plastic; seems to be sturdy enough for light-duty beginner work though I wouldn't want to put it into a shop setting where it runs for hours on end. A nice size, overall; big enough to not be a toy, but small enough to stow on a shelf to not take up countertop. Despite rumors of the router clamp being a separate purchase, my Fx came with one, so I was able to start using my Bosch pretty much right away.

A couple of "con"s here to offset the "pro"s.

Most of the 3-axis tools I have come with cutoff switches when a stepper motor reaches the end of travel; the Fx does not have this, so if you have it go beyond its limits, there's nothing stopping the stepper motor and you hear a plastic ratchet sound... so something will have an abbreviated lifespan if you do too much of that. I see this as a design flaw; even my cheapo 3d printer has this on three axes.

The other thing that is *really* irritating is that *everything* needs to be registered. Before you use the pendant, you need to go online and provide all manner of information about yourself before they give you the access code to allow you to actually get past the welcome screen on your device.
Irritating.
Then, again for the design software (this, I somewhat understand so mildly irritating.) Rumor has it that the Touch Plate also requires registration. A piece of milled aluminum with a wire, and you have to go online to register. Hmmm.

Really, except for the software, *none* of this should be necessary. When you buy a power tool, sure, there's that mail-in-to-get-spam-card to register it, but that is optional... and there is a reason why people *don't* register.

That rant aside, I'm looking forward to putting the CNC machine through more of its paces; that much, at least, seems like fun.
