Thanks to upgraded electronics, a color touch-screen pendant controller and additional expansion ports, the CNC Shark has become more versatile and easy-to-use than ever. It features larger linear guides, XY homing capability. Like past models, the Shark HD4 includes Virtual Zero software, which maps the surface of your workpiece for maximum accuracy. It features a gantry reinforced with heavy plate aluminum, adjustable bearings, and anti-backlash, wear-compensated lead screws on all three axes, allowing it to handle larger routers such as the Porter Cable 890 series, Bosch 1617 series and water-cooled spindles. Perfect for carving and machining a large variety of projects made from wood, soft metals or plastics. Simply supply a PC computer with USB 2.0 port and any of the routers listed below, connect the USB cable to the controller box and load the software. Includes VCarve Desktop V9.5 Design Software, Vector Art 3D Sampler Pack, and CNC Shark control software with Virtual Zero technology.

Works as planned - but it's *still* a machine :)
I've had this for about 9 months or so, and feel that I've enough experience to write something about it.

Please don't think that this is the cure to your woodworking everything, as it's not. It's a tool, one that is relatively complicated, and needs more attention than a planer or a saw. If you are in the camp that hates to zero your other tools, this is not going to be a fun experience. If you think that machines that give you 1/64" or less amount of control are great, along with the need to check alignment frequently, this is probably for you.

The software that generates too paths, VCarve is good, Pro adds a few features, and if you don't have/don't want to learn 3d modelling with a different program, spend the bucks and get Aspire. There might be cheaper ways to do 3D modeling, but importing .stl and .bmp (et alia) into VCarve isn't as forgiving or easy as one would hope. With Aspire, you can use a single program as a complete start to finish solution.

Be sure to check that the router bit is as close to exactly perpendicular to the t-track bed as possible. If it is off, you will be sanding out grooves from every flat surface that you try to mill, especially if you are using a planing bit, i.e. something that is 1" or larger.

At any rate, this is a great machine. There are a few things that I'd do a little differently if I built one, (limiter switches for max travel, heat sinks for the servos) but all in all it does what you tell it to do. With lots of dust. :)

Woodworking Experience:
Great tool and very well made.
I was apprehensive about buying this due to low number of reviews. It made me concerned. Having had my Shark HD4 with DeWalt router for 4 months now i can say it is awesome. The reason there are few reviews is likely due to the fact it takes time to understand what it is capable, way more than i expected. The installation was described as is different and if you use the tools on NewWaveAutomations website everything is spelled out. Could have used a few more photographs of the control box cable set up, but things are marked.
V carve desktop matched with this CNC can do amazing things.
Bottom line, few reviews are because users are too busy using the machine to take time to write reviews.

Woodworking Experience:
Great Machine
What a great machine with lots of really great features. The best of which is the touch-screen pendant. This is a small 5.5 x 4 x 1.5 inch LCD that plugs into the HD4 controller and has plenty of cable length to place it handily where you work on the machine. This frees me up from having to depend on a dedicated computer to run the CNC although I can still use one if desired. I can now do all the design work on a computer outside the shop environment put the output of the Vcarve software (included) on a thumb drive (not included) and plug it into the pendant and run the CNC. The pendant also has several Apps for setting parameters and the like. I really didn’t think I’d like it at first, but I have since changed my opinion.

It comes with a Sense Probe that will sense the board; find the center, and set the X and Y coordinates, among other functions, saving the trouble of finding the center manually. I find that I have shifted a lot of my XY datum positions for new projects to the center of the board because of its accuracy ease of use and I can now go back to find the exact start point without having to guess.

I find the Vetric software easy to use and the Vetric site has dozens of videos to teach you how to use all the functions of the software. They also have a lot of free project plans. I’ve made a few already.

I only have one regret; I should have bought the extended bed. But a great machine nonetheless.

Woodworking Experience:
It works but a little disappointed
I purchased this brand new a year ago because it was on sale. The machine operates for the most part but a few issues I’ve had.

1. The setup and support are very confusing. I submitted help tickets online but it took a week to respond.
2. The machine has tendencies to lose its zero position during the middle of a run. I created several inlays and during the middle of the run, the router bit (brand new bit) would catch causing the inlay to be ruined. When I would rezero the tool, it would be an inch or so off.
3. The firmware on the pad wasn’t up to date and it is a very confusing process to fix and required a service tech to send me a one off email.

What I like:
1. The price and package bundle is a good deal for comparable machines.
2. The laser works great!

I gave a three star because the overall process has been so hard to get any help or documentation on the issues noted here. It’s a good tool for the most part but I’d suggest Nextwave hire more customer service staff and increase their documentation on setup.

Woodworking Experience:
Product Quality
I purchased this machine with the expectations that it was of high quality. Doing the minimal steps required to setup and assemble the unit I found parts missing and broken components that had been installed in the factory. Also the software was not up to date and I had to spend considerable time trying to download current software and controller firmware. The web site is not clear on the versions that should be updated. Web site links would not communicate with the controller and the process to fix the issue is unclear. I rated this 3 stars because the machine has potential. I am genuinely disappointed with the quality of manufacture.

Woodworking Experience:
Just got the HD4. Had to retap the holes to get the router mount on. There was a large scratch on the inside of the top of the gantry. Must have been done during manufacturing. Other then that it took a couple of hours to put together and get setup. Did not need to do any software or firmware updates. Everything works except the pendant does not recognize the files on the usb stick. I have also had the machine just go across the piece while routing. Not sure what causes that. Seems to have a mind of its own at times. Still learning about the machine. Hoping tech spt well solve the pendant problem. I will probably live with the scratch.

The HD3 had a lot of complaints about flex in the Z axis. Has the HD4 fixed this issue?
Christopher K on Jul 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I get chatter in the Z axis when using anew 14" end mill in walnut, with slow speeds and light cutting depths. I complained to Nextwave and they sent me a new Z axis nut. I haven't had the time yet to change it out. this chatter only happens with end mills. for some reason V-bits cut fine.

BEST ANSWER: Yes and no. The machine is capable of engraving just about anything into any surface (provided you have correct bits). If you are doing small engraving in just one spot i think it would work well. If you plan on doing complicated engravings over a large area, and since a baseball bat is round, you would also need a 4th axis attachment, and all the bells and whistles that go with it. So to do a bat, plan to invest an additional $1000 on top of the cost of the machine. Hope this helped answer your question.
what dust boot works on shark hd4 and what is the rockler part number ?
James A on Feb 7, 2017
Can I use the Shark HD4 CNC Router to engrave in metal and plastic (name plates and signs, some as thin as 1/32")? Is it as simple is changing the type of bit? Thanks.
Brian B on Oct 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Don't know if you have tried yet, but yes change to an engraving bit and adjust the engraving depth to .010”, spindle speed should be around 14000 rpm, as far as the cut speed @ 0.3 to 0.5" per minute. depending on a few factors you might have to change the rates but this should get you started.
The VCarve desktop software version has a 24" x 24" capacity, however the Shark HD4 extended bed facilitates project out to 36". Is it possible to upgrade to the VCarve software which does not have the limited work area, while ordering?
Kelly on Jul 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The HD4 Extended Bed includes VCarve Pro software. There is no need to upgrade.
Will it do monogram cut out wood pieces?
Dezzy on May 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Shark HD4 can definitely do monograms. When setting the piece up to cut, you need a waste board under the board you plan to cut the monogram out of. A couple pieces of double back tape to hold the pieces together will keep your work piece from moving (even clamped wood on wood will move a little - enough to mess up your monogram. Don’t forget to setup tabs to hold work piece in place while your thru bit cuts out the monogram work piece. Check out Shark HD4 Forum at Next Wave Automations and YouTube has a lot of information that will help.

Will a 3rd party water cooled spindle work with this machine as long as it is 1.5KW 110V....?
John R on Jul 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Shark HD4 is provided with a mounting clamp for a router/spindle with a 3.5" diameter. The power is not managed by the CNC controller, so voltage and power would not be a factor for any of the Shark components. You would also need the appropriate VFD, pump, reservoir, and tubing.
