Now you can use the newer, lighter, more powerful 20V MAX batteries with your older 18V DeWalt tools!

DeWalt DCA1820 18V-20V Battery Adapter

Item #

Rating:
94% of 100

DeWalt's line of 18V cordless tools has been enormously popular, but with evolving battery technology, the Ni-Cad 18V platform is being replaced with the lighter, more compact Li-Ion 20V MAX platform. This battery adapter allows owners of the older 18V tools to install and use the new 20V MAX batteries, greatly extending the life of their tools. Because the 20V batteries are so much lighter in weight, the combined weight of the adapter and 20V battery is still less than the weight of the older equivalent 18V battery. Battery and Charger are sold separately—for the bundled kit offer, see (#54873, sold separately). Allows for use of 20V MAX* Compact Batteries in most DeWalt 18V Tools. Adapter will not fit into DeWalt 18V Chargers—charging requires use of DeWalt 20V MAX* charger

  • A 20V MAX charger (not included) is required to charge the 20V MAX batteries. The 20V batteries cannot be charged on 18V chargers, even when mounted to this adapter. If you need the 20V charger, see the DCA2203C kit (#54873, sold separately), which bundles a 20V charger, the 18V -20V adapter and (2) compact 20V MAX 2 AH batteries.
  • Do not use this Adapter with Premium Batteries (DCB200, DCB204, DCB204BT, DCB205) in 18V Compact drills DC970, DC759 (use DCB201, DCB203, DCB203BT compact batteries).

It has worked out quite well, the twenty volt batteries are a little lighter but last longer than the eighteen volt batteries. I might have to buy another one for my other eighteen volt tool.

DeWalt 18-20V Battery Adapter
Works very well, no problems. Simple and effective. I would like to order more but they are too high priced right now.

Great to finally get all the older tools on 20V Lithium Batteries
Plugs in easily and the batteries come in & out of the adapter without any issues. Read the review about not leaving the battery in the adapter due to a slow discharge.

Finally.
Dewalt first announced this in September with an expected October availability, so I have been waiting months for this to actually show up on the shelf. It does allow 20 Volt batteries to be used on all my Dewalt 18 Volt tools, but I have experienced one issue. It seems that if I leave the battery with adapter plugged into my drill (or other tools) when I am not using it, it causes the battery to lose charge. If I unplug the battery from the adapter after each use, the battery retains its charge for the next use. I am posting this issue on Dewalts WEB site to see if I can get feedback from them, but till then I would suggest you don't leave the battery plugged in when tool is not being used.

I'm transitioning to 20v ion batteries and want to use my older 18v tools? The 20v ion batteries are so much better and I don't want multiple battery / charges cluttering the shop.

Does this only work with DeWalt tools or would it work with any 18v drill, such as a Craftsman?
Rob B on Apr 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This only works with Dewalt Tools.
? I have A Dewalt 18 Volt lithium - ion will this adapter work instead of a 20V lithium - ion battery can i use my 18 Volt lithium - ion Battery ?
Donald on Apr 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Im confused by your question. I have dewalt 18 volt lithium batteries and they plug directly into my 18 volt tools. This adapter allows use of a 20 volt battery that uses a slide in type connection rather than a post type plug in to plug into the 18 volt tools.
